Admirable Bolete Identification Guide

A field walkthrough for Aureoboletus mirabilis, the mahogany-capped bolete that fruits from rotting hemlock wood in Pacific Northwest rainforest. Covers the ridged stipe, yellow pores, unusually long spores and the boletes it is most often mistaken for.

The Forest You Are Standing In

Almost every encounter with the Admirable Bolete happens in the same kind of place: damp conifer forest along the Pacific coast of North America, from northern California up through British Columbia and into southeast Alaska. Western hemlock is the tree to look for overhead, often mixed with Sitka spruce or Douglas-fir. Underfoot there is deep moss, a spongy mat of needle litter, and — critically — a lot of fallen wood in advanced stages of collapse.

The first impression is usually of colour. A deep mahogany to wine-red cap sits above a stout, ruddy stalk, and the whole thing looks slightly velvety and matte rather than slick. The second impression is of position. This bolete very often appears to be growing straight out of a rotting log, a mossy stump, or a hummock that turns out to be buried wood. Boletes are mycorrhizal fungi and this one does partner with hemlock roots, but the fruitbodies push up through decaying conifer wood far more often than is normal for the group. If you are looking at a big red-brown bolete apparently perched on a log, you have already eliminated most of the genus.

Reading the Cap

Work from the top down. The cap is typically 5 to 15 cm across, convex at first and flattening only slowly, so it keeps a domed profile for a long time. Colour runs from dark reddish brown through maroon and vinaceous to almost purple-brown, generally darkest at the centre and a little paler toward the edge.

Run a fingertip across it. The surface is dry and finely matted-fibrillose or tomentose, sometimes developing a scurfy, roughened, almost shaggy texture as it expands. Only in sustained wet weather does it become slightly tacky. Look at the very margin: young caps usually carry a narrow overhanging sterile flap of tissue, a thin skirt of cap surface projecting past the tube layer. That overhang is worth noting, because it is a shared feature with only a handful of relatives.

The Pore Surface

Turn the cap over. The spore-bearing surface is a layer of vertical tubes ending in pores, not gills. In young material the pores are bright lemon to chrome yellow; with age they shift to olive-yellow, dull gold, and finally a dingy olive-brown. Pores are small, roughly one to two per millimetre, round to slightly angular.

Check where the tubes meet the stalk. In this species the tube layer is usually depressed around the stipe, forming a shallow moat, and the tubes themselves are deep — several millimetres to a centimetre in a mature cap. Press the pore surface firmly with a thumbnail. Any colour change is slight; the surface may darken faintly to brownish, but there is no dramatic instant blue flush, and that quiet response is part of the picture.

Stipe, Base and Flesh

The stalk is stout and usually thickens downward into a club or a swollen base that tapers again where it enters the wood. Colour is close to the cap, reddish brown to vinaceous, often paler and yellowish at the extreme apex.

Now look closely at the upper stipe with a hand lens. You should see coarse longitudinal ridges that fuse into a network — a raised reticulum. In many collections the reticulation is limited to the top third; in others it runs most of the length, becoming a set of shaggy, interlocking ribs. This ridged, reticulate, red-brown stalk on a log is the single most memorable field feature.

Slice a fruitbody in half from cap to base. The flesh is white to pale yellowish, sometimes with a wine-coloured flush directly under the cap cuticle. Watch the cut face for a minute or two: it stays essentially unchanged, perhaps browning slowly. There is no rapid blueing.

Taking a Spore Print

Cut the stipe off flush with the tubes and set the cap pore-side down on a sheet of white paper, ideally with a corner over black paper or a glass slide so you can judge colour against both backgrounds. Cover it with a bowl to stop draughts and leave it three to six hours, or overnight if the cap is young and dry.

The print is olive-brown, the standard colour for the group but still worth confirming. If you have a microscope, this species offers a bonus: the spores are extremely long and narrow, spindle-shaped, commonly 17 to 24 micrometres by 7 to 9 micrometres. Very few boletes have spores that elongate, so a quick look at 400x is close to conclusive.

Substrate and Season

Fruiting runs from late summer through autumn, peaking after the first sustained rains and often continuing into early winter near the coast. The substrate is the identification clue people underuse: rotting conifer logs, hemlock stumps, buried woody debris, and the moss carpet over them. Single fruitbodies are common, small scattered groups normal, and the same log will often produce again in later seasons.

Separating It From Look-Alikes

Suillus lakei is the most frequently confused species, since it also has a dry, reddish, fibrillose cap and yellow pores in the same forests. Separate it on three points: its pores are distinctly angular and radially arranged rather than small and round, its tube layer runs down onto the stipe, and it carries a partial veil that leaves a fibrillose zone or ring on a stalk speckled with resinous glandular dots. It also grows on soil under Douglas-fir, not on rotten logs.

Xerocomellus zelleri shares the dark cap, but there the cap is olive-black to sooty and often finely wrinkled rather than mahogany and fibrillose, the stipe is bright yellow flushed with red and has no reticulation, and the pore surface blues promptly when pressed.

Leccinum manzanitae has a comparable red-brown cap but it is viscid when wet, the stipe is white to greyish and covered in dark projecting scabers rather than a raised net, the pores are whitish to buff before turning brownish, and the flesh discolours to grey and black on cutting.

Aureoboletus projectellus, the eastern relative, is genuinely similar in its overhanging cap margin and long spores, but it grows in sandy soil under pines on the Atlantic coastal plain, its cap is duller and more purple-brown, and its stipe reticulation is coarser and more ribbed.

Finally, ordinary brown boletes in the same woods almost never fruit from wood, rarely combine a reticulate red-brown stipe with an unchanging pale flesh, and never show the enormously elongated spores.

Field Checklist
