An unusual Agaricus that fruits in dense caespitose clusters, its caps streaked with dark brown fibrous scales and its stipes crowded and often bent. Favours nitrogen-rich soil under broadleaf trees.
Overview
Agaricus bohusii is one of the few members of its genus that reliably grows in tight caespitose tufts, with many fruit bodies fused at the base and their stipes bent and pressed against one another as they compete for space. In a genus where solitary or loosely scattered growth is the norm, that clustered habit alone attracts attention.
Described in the twentieth century and named for the Hungarian mycologist Gábor Bohus, it belongs among the brown-scaled, reddening Agaricus species. The cap is covered in coarse, radially arranged dark brown to olive-brown fibrous scales on a paler ground, giving a streaked appearance, and the flesh takes on reddish tones when cut before slowly darkening.
It is a fungus of enriched, disturbed ground rather than deep forest — parkland, nettle beds, roadside plantings, and the edges of broadleaf woodland where nitrogen has accumulated. It is largely a central and southern European species, locally frequent in some countries and rare enough elsewhere to appear on regional red lists.
How to identify it
Cap
Usually 5–15 cm across, ovoid to hemispherical at first, then convex and finally flattened, often irregular or lopsided because of crowding within the tuft. The pale cream ground is overlaid with dense, coarse, radially arranged fibrous scales in dark brown, umber, or olive-brown, concentrated at the centre and breaking into separate streaks and patches toward the margin. The margin is frequently ragged with veil remnants.
Gills
Free from the stipe, crowded and narrow. They are pale greyish-white to faintly pink at first, deepening through dull pink and purplish brown to dark chocolate brown. Where fruit bodies press together the gills can be distorted or partly fused.
Stipe
5–12 cm long, 1–3 cm thick, often curved, tapering, or flattened by crowding, and characteristically fused with neighbouring stipes at a common swollen base. It is whitish, smooth above the ring and fibrillose to slightly scaly below, discolouring brownish where handled. The ring is large, membranous, and pendulous, its underside often decorated with cottony or floccose patches.
Flesh and spore print
Flesh is white and firm, developing reddish to vinaceous tints where cut, especially in the stipe, and eventually turning brownish. The odour is pleasant and mushroomy to faintly aromatic. The spore print is dark brown.
Where and when it grows
A species of rich, nitrogen-enhanced soils in open woodland and cultivated ground. Typical sites include city parks and avenues, nettle beds and rank herbage at woodland margins, plantings of elm, poplar, black locust, and lime, hedge bottoms, and disturbed ground near paths and compost. It has a marked preference for warm, base-rich soils and is commonest in the lowlands.
Fruiting runs from summer into autumn, in dense clumps that can contain a dozen or more fruit bodies emerging from a single point. It is chiefly known from central, eastern, and southern Europe, extending into the Mediterranean basin, with scattered records further north and west where it is generally considered uncommon and locally protected.
Ecological role
Agaricus bohusii is a saprotroph exploiting nutrient-rich organic matter in the soil: accumulated leaf litter, buried woody debris, root remains, and the humus that builds up under nettle and other nitrophilous vegetation. Its preference for nitrogen-rich sites places it in the same ecological guild as the nettle-bed fungi, and it often fruits in exactly the sort of rank, disturbed ground that surrounds long-established parkland trees.
The clustered fruiting habit reflects the way the mycelium concentrates its resources at a rich patch of substrate — typically a buried mass of decaying wood or root — rather than spreading thinly through poor soil. Producing many fruit bodies from one point releases a large spore load from a single site, and the tufts are often colonised by fungus gnats and beetles that assist dispersal.
Similar species
Agaricus langei and Agaricus sylvaticus share brown fibrillose caps and reddening flesh but grow singly or in scattered groups rather than in fused tufts, and their scales are finer and more evenly appressed. The Prince (Agaricus augustus) is larger with golden-tawny scales, yellows rather than reddens, and has a strongly cogwheel-patterned ring underside.
Clustered Armillaria species also fruit in dense tufts on and around broadleaf trees, but they have gills that are attached and decurrent rather than free, a white spore print, and honey-coloured caps with fine erect scales. Pholiota species grow in similar tufts but produce rusty-brown spore prints and have attached gills, and their caps are often slimy or scaly-glutinous rather than dry and fibrillose.
