A brilliant red-to-orange Amanita of eastern North American oak and pine woods, with yellow gills, a yellow-orange skirt ring and a thick white sac at the base.

Overview

Amanita jacksonii is the best known North American member of the Caesar's mushroom group, section Caesareae, whose species combine bright red or orange caps, yellow to orange gills and stems, a membranous ring, and a thick white sac-like volva. It replaces the European Amanita caesarea across much of eastern North America and was for a long time recorded under that European name before being described as distinct.

The fruit body is unusually colourful for the genus. A young button emerges from the litter as a smooth white egg, and when the universal veil splits the cap that appears is scarlet or blood-red at the centre, grading through orange to a yellow-orange rim that is strongly grooved. Because virtually all the universal veil stays behind as the basal sac, the cap surface is smooth and bare rather than warted.

Several closely related species occur through the southern United States, Mexico and Central America, and the group as a whole is currently treated as a complex of regional taxa. Amanita jacksonii proper is the slender-stemmed northern form, ranging from eastern Canada down the Appalachians.

How to identify it

Cap

4-12 cm across, egg-shaped then bell-shaped, finally convex to flat, sometimes with a low umbo. The centre is a vivid scarlet or blood-red, grading outward through orange to orange-yellow at the margin. The surface is smooth, bare, faintly greasy when wet, and normally without any veil patches. The outer quarter to third of the margin is strongly and evenly grooved, matching the gill positions beneath.

Gills

Free from the stem, crowded, fairly broad, and coloured pale yellow to orange-yellow rather than white, which is unusual in the genus. Numerous short gills sit between the full-length ones, and the gill edges are minutely floccose.

Stipe

8-18 cm tall and 1-2 cm thick, tapering slightly upward, yellow to orange-yellow, and typically overlaid with faint reddish-orange fibrillose flocking or banding. The ring is membranous, skirt-like, pendulous, and coloured yellow to orange, hanging from the upper third of the stem and usually persistent. The base sits in a thick, white, membranous, sac-like volva with a free rim, which usually remains clean white in contrast to the coloured stem above it.

Flesh and spore print

The flesh is white to pale yellow, thicker at the disc and thin toward the margin, and does not change colour on cutting. The odour is mild. The spore print is white; the spores are broadly ellipsoid.

Where and when it grows

This species is a woodland fungus of eastern North America, growing on the ground in oak forest, oak-pine forest and mixed hardwood stands. Oaks and pines are the principal partners, and it also occurs with hickory and other hardwood associates. It favours well-drained, often somewhat poor and sandy or rocky soils, and appears scattered or in small groups among leaf litter, along woodland edges and on wooded slopes.

Fruiting occurs in summer and early autumn, particularly after warm, humid weather with heavy rain. The range extends from Quebec and Ontario south through New England and the Appalachian chain to the southeastern states, with related members of the complex continuing into Mexico and Central America.

Ecological role

Amanita jacksonii is ectomycorrhizal, forming a sheathing partnership with the fine roots of oaks and pines. As in other members of the guild, the fungus supplies water and mineral nutrients drawn from a soil volume far larger than the roots alone could reach, and receives carbohydrates in return. Its association with both a broadleaf and a conifer host group allows it to occupy the mixed oak-pine forests that dominate much of its range.

The egg stage is a good part of the life cycle to observe. The whole young fruit body is enclosed in a thick white universal veil, and when this splits at the apex the coloured cap pushes through while the veil base remains as an intact cup. A separate partial veil covers the gills and is left as the persistent yellow-orange ring. Sliced lengthwise, an egg shows the miniature cap, gills and stem already formed inside the white envelope.

Similar species

Amanita caesarea of southern Europe is very similar in structure, with a ring, yellow gills and a white sac, but its cap is a more uniform orange-red without such a sharply contrasting scarlet disc, and the two are separated by geography. Amanita muscaria is scarlet to orange but carries numerous white cottony warts across the cap, has white gills and a white stem, and its base is a bulb encircled by concentric scaly bands rather than a free-rimmed sac.

Amanita flavoconia is smaller and yellow-orange, with bright yellow powdery warts scattered over the cap, whitish to pale yellow gills, and a fragile, crumbly yellow volva that leaves loose granular material rather than a membranous cup. Amanita frostii is smaller still, orange with yellow warts and a distinctly collared basal bulb. The combination of a bare grooved red-orange cap, yellow gills, a yellow ring and a thick white sac is unique to the Caesar's group.
