American Parasol Identification Guide
A working field routine for Leucoagaricus americanus, the woodchip-pile parasol with a spindle-shaped stipe and flesh that stains deep reddish-brown, and how to separate it from Chlorophyllum and Macrolepiota on structure alone.
The First Impression
The American Parasol (Leucoagaricus americanus) is a mushroom of disturbed, managed ground. The classic encounter is a cluster erupting from a woodchip pile behind a park depot, a sawdust heap at an old mill site, a mulched municipal bed, a compost pile or the rotting base of a hardwood stump. Fruit bodies come up in tight groups from a shared mycelial mass, in summer and autumn, often in flushes after heavy rain.
At a distance the profile is unmistakably parasol-like: a pale cap on a long slim stipe, held well clear of the substrate. Get closer and two things separate it immediately from other parasols. First, the stipe swells conspicuously in its lower half into a spindle, tapering again to a narrow rooting point. Second, everything the species touches, or that touches it, goes red. Old fruit bodies stand in the pile stained dull wine-brown from the base upward.
Reading the Cap
Caps are 4-12 cm across, sometimes larger. The button is ovoid to almost cylindrical and smooth-looking, opening to convex and then flat, nearly always with a broad, distinct umbo.
The surface pattern develops as the cap expands. A continuous reddish-brown to purplish-brown skin cracks into flat, appressed scales over a white to cream ground. Over the umbo the scales remain fused into an unbroken dark disc; outward they become smaller, more separated and arranged in a loose concentric pattern, so the cap reads as a dark centre with brown flecks on white. In age the margin can become finely grooved and the whole cap discolours dull reddish where damaged.
Press the cap firmly with a thumb and wait a minute. The bruise should darken to a reddish or vinaceous tone, then eventually to brown. That reaction, on a white-gilled parasol growing on woodchips, is already highly indicative.
Gills and the Spore Print
The gills are free and remain clearly separated from the stipe by a collar, and they are crowded, narrow and soft. Fresh gills are white to cream. As they age, and wherever they are bruised, they discolour reddish-brown to vinaceous, and a mature or handled specimen shows dirty pinkish-brown gills that never pass through the clean pink stage of Agaricus. Under a lens the gill edge is finely uneven.
The spore print is essential here, and it demands the right surface. Because the deposit is white to very slightly cream, printing onto white paper wastes the effort. Cut the stipe flush, set the cap gill-down on a glass slide over black card, or on dark paper, cover with a bowl, and leave four to six hours. A white deposit fits; a dull greyish-green deposit means Chlorophyllum molybdites instead, and a dark brown deposit means you are in Agaricus.
Microscopically the spores are ellipsoid with a small germ pore, roughly 8-11 by 5.5-7 micrometres, and they are dextrinoid, turning reddish-brown in Melzer's reagent. Cheilocystidia are abundant and club-shaped.
Stipe, Ring and Base
The stipe is 6-15 cm long and the most useful single structure on the mushroom. Near the apex it is slender, perhaps 8-15 mm thick; it thickens steadily downward to a swollen spindle or ventricose bulge in the lower third, up to 2-3 cm across, then tapers abruptly again into a narrow, often rooting base buried in the chips. Nothing about that outline resembles the abrupt marginate bulb of Chlorophyllum brunneum.
The surface is white and smooth to silky, and it stains reddish-brown to almost blackish where handled, with the discolouration usually starting at the base and creeping upward as the fruit body ages. The flesh is fibrous and hollows with age.
The ring sits high, is membranous, white above and often brownish beneath, and is characteristically moveable: once the cap has expanded, the ring can be slid up and down the stipe with a fingertip. Confirm this gently on a mature specimen.
Flesh and Colour Change
Split a fruit body lengthwise and watch. White flesh turns reddish within a minute or two, most strongly in the stipe, then deepens over the next quarter of an hour to a dark reddish-brown or vinaceous. Some collections show a brief yellowish or saffron phase before the red develops. Drying material discolours throughout to a dull wine-brown, and dried specimens in a collection box are often almost uniformly reddish.
The odour is mild and faintly aromatic, without any distinctive note. This is a species identified by structure and staining rather than by smell.
Substrate, Season and Ecology
Leucoagaricus americanus is a saprotroph of woody debris in an advanced state of breakdown: woodchip mulch, sawdust, bark piles, compost, rotting stumps and their surrounding soil, and enriched ground in gardens, parks and roadsides. It is at home in urban and suburban settings, and mulch spreading moves it around efficiently, so it appears unannounced in newly dressed beds.
It fruits from early summer into autumn, in warm conditions and following rain, in eastern and central North America and increasingly in introduced situations elsewhere. Cluster growth from a substantial substrate mass is normal; solitary fruit bodies occur but are less usual. The direct association with heaps of woody debris, rather than with living tree roots or with open lawn turf, is a genuine identification character and should be recorded.
Separating the Look-alikes
Chlorophyllum molybdites is the standing confusion in the same region. It fruits in lawns, playing fields and grassy verges rather than on chip piles, its cap scales are paler tan-brown and more sparse, its gills develop a distinct dull greyish-green tone with age, its spore print is dull green, and its stipe base is a simple club or bulb rather than a spindle. Colour change in the flesh is slower and duller.
Chlorophyllum rhacodes, C. olivieri and C. brunneum all redden strongly on cutting, which is the reason they get confused, but their caps carry much coarser, shaggy, recurved scales, their rings are thick and often double-edged, and their stipe bases are abruptly bulbous, with C. brunneum showing a distinctly rimmed, marginate bulb. They grow in soil and litter, in gardens, conifer plantings and hedge banks.
Macrolepiota procera is taller and more slender, with a cap patterned in coarse dark brown scales on a fawn ground and, decisively, a stipe girdled with fine brown snakeskin banding. Its flesh scarcely changes colour, and it grows in grassland, woodland clearings and verges.
Leucoagaricus leucothites is smooth-capped and essentially white, without the reddish scaling and without the spindle stipe.
Agaricus species in the same mulch beds are separated at once by gills that pass through pink to dark brown and by a dark brown spore print.
A Working Sequence
Record the substrate; a chip or sawdust pile is a strong start. Check the umbonate cap with a solid dark disc and concentric brown scales, free white gills, and a high moveable ring. Feel down the stipe for the spindle swelling and rooting base. Cut lengthwise and time the reddening. Finish with a white spore print taken on a dark surface, which rules out the green-spored look-alike outright.
