Amethyst Chanterelle Identification Guide
A detailed field routine for Cantharellus amethysteus, the beech-wood chanterelle whose yellow cap is broken up by lilac-violet scales, including how to read false gills, take a pale spore print, and rule out the false chanterelle.
The First Impression
The Amethyst Chanterelle (Cantharellus amethysteus) is found the way all chanterelles are found: as a patch of warm egg-yellow among leaf litter and moss on a woodland bank, usually in a scattered troop rather than singly. You are typically standing in mature beech or oak woodland on acid to moderately acid soil, on a slope, along an old bank or beside a path where the litter is thin, from midsummer through autumn.
What sets this one apart at a glance is a dusty violet bloom over the cap. Where a plain chanterelle is uniformly yellow, this species looks as though someone has brushed the centre of the cap with lilac-grey. Kneel down and look with a lens: the violet is not a wash but a scatter of fine appressed fibrillose scales over the yellow ground.
Be prepared for the character to be weak. In old, rain-washed or sun-exposed fruit bodies the amethyst tones fade badly, and the stoutest characters then become build and structure rather than colour.
Reading the Cap
Caps are 3-10 cm across, sometimes more in a well-grown troop. They begin convex with a strongly inrolled margin, flatten, and finally become depressed or shallowly funnel-shaped, with a margin that is wavy, lobed and often irregularly split in mature specimens. The outline is rarely circular.
The surface is dry and matt, never viscid or shiny. The ground colour is egg-yellow to pale ochre-yellow, and over it lie small, flat, appressed fibrillose scales in amethyst, lilac-grey or violet-brown, densest over the disc and thinning outward. In some collections the scales are so dense that the cap centre reads as purple-grey; in others they are reduced to a faint mottling.
Reading the Underside: False Gills
This is the part of the examination that must not be rushed, because it is what defines the genus.
Turn the fruit body over. The fertile surface consists of blunt, thick, shallow ridges or folds, not thin blade-like gills. They run decurrently well down the stipe with no clear break, they fork repeatedly, and they are joined by cross-veins in the hollows between them so the whole surface looks like a network rather than a set of parallel plates. The colour is pale yellow to cream-yellow, usually paler and more washed-out than the cap, and in older specimens the ridges look slightly bruised and ochre.
Now do the physical test. Take a fingernail and try to scrape a ridge sideways off the flesh. In a true chanterelle you cannot: the ridges are simply folds of the cap flesh and they crumble with the tissue. In an agaric the gills are separate structures that peel or shear away cleanly. This single test settles most chanterelle questions in the field.
Stipe, Flesh and Colour Change
The stipe is 3-8 cm long and 1-2.5 cm thick, solid and firm, usually tapering downward, and it merges smoothly into the cap so that there is no sharp boundary and no separable structure. It is concolorous with the ridges or a slightly deeper yellow, smooth, and carries neither a ring nor a volva. At the base you will usually find white mycelial felt binding soil, moss and litter fragments.
Tear a fruit body apart rather than cutting it. The flesh is white to pale yellow and fibrous, and it splits lengthwise into strings rather than breaking cleanly, another good genus character. Bruised or handled surfaces discolour slowly to a dull ochre or brownish-yellow; there is no rapid or vivid staining. The scent is fruity and apricot-like, faint in dry conditions and obvious when a handful of fresh material is enclosed in a container for a minute.
Taking a Spore Print
Chanterelle prints are pale, so preparation matters. Cut the stipe short, rest the cap ridges-down on a glass slide over black card, cover it with a bowl and leave it four to eight hours in a cool place. The deposit is pale cream to pale ochre-yellow, and it settles in fine radiating lines that follow the ridges, which is itself a small confirmation that you are printing folds rather than gills.
Under the microscope the spores are smooth, ellipsoid, roughly 7.5-10.5 by 5-6.5 micrometres, and inamyloid. A white print is acceptable at the pale end; a clearly brown, rusty or purple-brown print excludes the genus.
Substrate, Season and Ecology
Cantharellus amethysteus is ectomycorrhizal, forming a partnership with the roots of broadleaved trees, particularly beech and oak, and it is therefore tied to established woodland rather than to wood debris, mulch or dung. It has a preference for acid to slightly acid, often sandy or well-drained soils, and it fruits among moss, thin litter and on shaded banks.
The season runs from summer into autumn, following sustained rain, and productive patches return to the same ground for many years because the mycelium is long-lived and root-associated. Recording the surrounding trees is therefore part of the identification: a chanterelle-shaped fungus growing on a stump, on woodchips or in open grass away from trees is telling you to look elsewhere.
Separating the Look-alikes
Cantharellus cibarius is the nearest relative and the pair grades into one another. It has the same shape, ridges and scent but a uniformly egg-yellow, unscaled cap. Faded specimens of C. amethysteus can be difficult; check the cap centre with a lens for scale remnants, and note that C. amethysteus tends to be a stouter fruit body with a broader stipe.
Cantharellus pallens has a pale whitish bloom over a cream to pale yellow cap that flushes ochre when rubbed, without any lilac or violet tones.
Cantharellus friesii is much smaller and more delicate, with an orange to salmon-pink cap and pinkish ridges, and it is finely downy rather than scaly.
Craterellus tubaeformis has a brown, often umbilicate cap, grey-brown widely spaced ridges and a hollow yellow stipe, and it favours mossy conifer woodland.
Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca, the false chanterelle, is the classic morphological trap. Its underside carries true gills: thin, sharp-edged, deep orange, repeatedly forked, crowded, and easily separable from the cap flesh with a fingernail. The cap is velvety and orange-brown with a paler margin, the flesh is thin and soft rather than thick and fibrous, the stipe is often eccentric, and it grows on conifer litter and woody debris.
Omphalotus species are larger, clustered at the base of hardwood stumps and roots, and have true, thin, sharp-edged decurrent gills throughout.
Turbinellus floccosus and its relatives are vase-shaped with a coarsely scaly inner surface and wrinkled outer folds, and they belong to conifer forests.
A Working Sequence
Note the trees and the soil. Check the cap for appressed lilac fibrils on a yellow ground. Turn it over and confirm blunt, forking, cross-veined decurrent ridges that will not peel. Tear the flesh and watch it string. Smell for apricot. Then take a pale ochre print on dark card, and the record is complete.
