A thin, pure white, stalkless fan that grows in crowded troops on decaying conifer wood, with narrow crowded gills radiating from a pinched point of attachment.
Overview
Angel Wings (Pleurocybella porrigens) is one of the most delicate-looking of the shelf-forming gilled fungi: a fan or ear of pure white, thin, pliable tissue attached to conifer wood by little more than a narrow pinched point. Massed troops can cover the length of a mossy log, each fruitbody arching outward and often curling at the margin as it dries.
The genus Pleurocybella contains this single well-known species and is now placed in the Marasmiaceae, having historically been shuffled between Pleurotus and Phyllotus. Its separation from true oysters rests on the extremely thin flesh, the essentially absent stipe, the very narrow crowded gills, and a strong preference for coniferous rather than broadleaved wood.
It is a fungus of cool, damp, mature coniferous forest, particularly where large hemlock, spruce or fir logs have lain long enough to become soft and moss-covered. In such settings its brilliant whiteness against dark decaying wood makes it one of the easiest late-season fungi to spot from a distance.
How to identify it
Cap
The fruitbody is 2–10 cm across, fan-, ear- or spatula-shaped, occasionally almost tongue-like, and attached laterally to the wood without a stipe or via a rudimentary stub. The upper surface is white — pure white when young, ageing to cream or faintly yellowish — and is smooth, bald and dry to slightly moist. The margin is thin, often wavy, inrolled at first and frequently lobed or split in age.
Gills
Gills are white, very narrow and extremely crowded, radiating from the pinched point of attachment across the whole undersurface. They are noticeably finer and more densely packed than the gills of true oysters, and they retain their whiteness rather than yellowing appreciably. There is no stipe for them to run down, so attachment is simply radiating from the base.
Stipe
Effectively absent. The fan narrows to a slender attachment point that may be finely hairy or downy where it grips the substrate, but there is no developed stalk, no ring and no volva.
Flesh & spore print
The flesh is very thin — often only 1–3 mm — white, soft and pliable, becoming limp when wet and brittle when dry, and it does not change colour when cut or bruised. The spore print is white; spores are small, smooth and subglobose.
Where and when it grows
Pleurocybella porrigens is a specialist of coniferous wood in an advanced state of decay. Hemlock is a classic host in North America, with spruce, fir and pine also used, and in Europe and Asia spruce and fir dominate. It fruits on fallen logs, stumps and buried woody debris that has already softened and is often carpeted in moss, and it typically appears in large numbers along a single log rather than as isolated fruitbodies.
The season runs from late summer through autumn, sometimes persisting to the first hard frosts. It is a northern and montane species, widespread in cool, humid old-growth and secondary conifer forest across North America, Europe and East Asia, and it is most abundant in regions with heavy rainfall and abundant large coarse woody debris.
Ecological role
The fungus is a saprotroph causing a white rot of conifer wood, working on material that is already well advanced in decomposition. Rather than being a primary coloniser of freshly fallen timber, it tends to occupy the late stages of the decay sequence, extracting the remaining lignin and cellulose from soft, crumbling logs and returning those nutrients to the forest soil.
Its fruiting behaviour — hundreds of thin fans erupting along the flanks and underside of a log after autumn rain — reflects a strategy of rapid, cheap fruitbody construction: very thin flesh maximises gill area per unit of biomass invested. Because it depends on large fallen conifer trunks that persist for years, the species serves as an indicator of forests with a continuity of coarse woody debris, and it tends to decline where dead wood is systematically removed.
Similar species
Pale forms of Pleurotus ostreatus and P. pulmonarius are the most frequent confusion, but both have thicker, fleshier tissue, broader and much less crowded gills, at least a rudimentary lateral stipe, and a preference for hardwood; oyster gills also tend to run down onto that stipe stub. Pleurotus fans are usually greyish, tan or ivory rather than the flat white of Angel Wings.
Panellus species such as Panellus stipticus are far smaller, tan to buff rather than white, with a distinctly stubby lateral stalk and a suede-like cap surface. Crepidotus species share the small stalkless fan form but are separated at once by a brown spore print that dusts the fans below them. Hohenbuehelia species are white to greyish but have gelatinous flesh with a rubbery separable layer beneath the cap skin, quite unlike the uniformly thin dry tissue of Angel Wings. Confirming a white spore print, extremely crowded narrow gills, and conifer substrate together settles the identification.
