Overview

Apricot Jelly (Guepinia helvelloides, also known as Tremiscus helvelloides) is unmistakable among jelly fungi for both its colour and its architecture. Instead of shapeless lobes, it produces a well-defined structure: a rolled, funnel-shaped or spoon-shaped blade that narrows downward into a stalk-like base, standing several centimetres tall.

The colour is a rich salmon-pink to apricot or rosy-orange, and because the tissue is translucent the whole fruiting body glows when backlit. In good condition it is one of the most photogenic fungi of late summer, and a cluster pushing through gravel on a forest track is hard to miss.

Taxonomically it sits in the Auriculariales, related to Auricularia and Exidia, although its erect, differentiated form is unusual for that group. The fertile surface is restricted to the outer face of the rolled blade, with the inner face sterile, a subtlety worth checking when confirming the identification.

Fruiting body

Erect, 3–10 cm tall and 2–8 cm wide, shaped like a rolled funnel, an inverted cone split down one side, a tongue or a spatula. The blade is often folded so that one edge overlaps the other, and it narrows abruptly into a short, stalk-like sterile base buried in soil or litter. Single or in small clustered groups.

Surfaces

The outer (convex, lower) surface is fertile and slightly matt or minutely roughened; the inner (concave, upper) surface is smooth, sterile and often a shade paler. This division between fertile and sterile faces is unusual among jelly fungi and helps confirm the genus.

Colour and texture

Salmon-pink, apricot, rosy-orange or pinkish-brown, translucent and glowing when held to the light, with the base often paler and whitish. The texture is firm-gelatinous and rubbery, holding its shape well and not collapsing when handled.

Flesh and spore print

Flesh translucent, gelatinous, uniform, without fibrous strands, ring or volva; the stalk-like base is a continuation of the same tissue rather than a true stipe. No colour change on cutting. Spore print white.

Where and when it grows

Apricot Jelly typically emerges from soil, gravel or litter overlying buried conifer wood such as old roots, stumps and buried logging debris, which is why it so often appears on forest tracks, path edges, banks and disturbed ground in conifer plantations. Less commonly it fruits directly on visible rotting wood.

The season runs from summer into autumn, with the main flush after sustained rain in warm weather. It is widespread but generally uncommon across temperate Europe, Asia and North America, being most often reported from montane and upland conifer forest.

Ecological role

The species is a saprotroph on buried and decaying conifer wood. Because its substrate lies out of sight beneath the surface, it gives the misleading impression of a terrestrial fungus, and it is one of several wood-rotters routinely mistaken for a soil species. Excavating carefully around the base usually reveals a rotten root or fragment of buried timber.

Spores are produced only on the outer face of the rolled blade, an arrangement that keeps the fertile surface downward-facing and sheltered while allowing spores to drop clear of the fruiting body. Its firm gelatinous construction resists both drying and mechanical damage, which suits the exposed, trampled path-edge habitats where it often grows.

Similar species

Tremella mesenterica and Tremella aurantia are yellow to orange rather than salmon-pink and form irregular folded masses on wood with no stalk-like base or defined blade. Dacrymyces chrysospermus (Orange Jelly) is bright orange, lobed and cushion-like on barkless conifer logs, with a whitish rooting attachment point rather than an erect funnel.

Auricularia auricula-judae (Jelly Ear) is brown, ear-shaped and attached laterally to standing dead wood, usually elder, without an upright stalk-like base. Phlebia tremellosa and similar wrinkled crust fungi can be pinkish and gelatinous but are flat, spreading and attached over their whole underside rather than erect and funnel-shaped.
