A North American oyster mushroom restricted to dead aspen and cottonwood, with pale fleshy caps in overlapping shelves and a buff-tinted rather than lilac spore print.
Overview
The Aspen Oyster was long treated as a form of the common oyster mushroom before being recognised as a separate species defined by its host and its spore print. It grows only on Populus, the aspens and cottonwoods, and in North America it is often the dominant oyster mushroom of northern aspen forests.
In the field it looks like a pale, fleshy oyster: broad ivory to cream caps in overlapping tiers on a fallen or standing dead aspen trunk. The most consistent technical difference from the common oyster is the spore deposit, which is white to buff rather than carrying the pale lilac-grey tint typical of Pleurotus ostreatus.
Season is also informative. Aspen Oyster fruiting is concentrated in late spring and early summer, coinciding with the flush of warm weather after snowmelt in the boreal and northern temperate forests where aspen dominates.
How to identify it
Cap
Caps are 5-15 cm across, fleshy, convex at first then flattening and often shallowly depressed towards the attachment. The surface is smooth, dry to slightly moist, and white, ivory, cream or pale buff, sometimes with a faint tan flush over the centre in age. Margins are thin, incurved when young, and may become wavy or split.
Gills
Gills are decurrent, crowded and fairly narrow, white to cream and ageing pale buff. They run down onto the stem tissue and are frequently cross-veined near the base.
Stipe
The stem is short or nearly absent, 1-3 cm long, lateral to strongly eccentric, white, firm, and usually finely woolly at the point of attachment. Multiple caps commonly emerge from a shared base to form overlapping shelves.
Flesh and spore print
Flesh is thick, firm and white, unchanging when cut. The spore print is white to pale buff, without the lilac-grey cast of the common oyster, and this is the most reliable separator between the two.
Where and when it grows
This species is a strict Populus specialist. It fruits on dead standing trunks, fallen logs, large branches and stumps of quaking aspen, bigtooth aspen and eastern and plains cottonwood, and is not found on other genera of trees. Where aspen is abundant it can be extremely common, with dozens of clusters on a single downed trunk.
Its range covers northern and montane North America, from the boreal forest south through the Rocky Mountains, the Great Lakes region and New England wherever aspen and cottonwood grow. Fruiting is concentrated in late spring and early summer, following the first sustained warm humid weather of the season.
Ecological role
The Aspen Oyster is a saprotrophic white-rot fungus. It colonises dead aspen sapwood and heartwood, degrading lignin and cellulose together and leaving the residual wood pale, soft and fibrous. Aspen is a short-lived, fast-growing tree that dies and falls in large numbers, and this fungus is one of the principal agents that recycles that abundant deadwood.
Because aspen stands regenerate as clonal groves and die back in waves, the fungus has a large and renewable substrate available across its range. Its mycelium, like that of other Pleurotus species, can also trap and digest nematodes in the wood, an adaptation to the low nitrogen content of dead timber. The decaying trunks it produces become habitat for beetles, salamanders and cavity-using wildlife.
Similar species
Pleurotus ostreatus is the main confusion. It is generally greyer to grey-brown, occurs on a wide range of hardwoods rather than only aspen, fruits mainly in cold weather, and gives a spore print with a distinct pale lilac-grey tint. Pleurotus pulmonarius is thinner-fleshed with a longer, better-defined lateral stem and a lilac-tinged print as well.
Hypsizygus ulmarius can grow on cottonwood but has a broad convex cap on a stout central stem, with gills that are notched or adnate rather than decurrent. Small Crepidotus species on the same logs are stalkless, only a few centimetres wide, and deposit brown spores, ruling them out immediately.
