A basidiomycete that converts azalea leaves and buds into thick, fleshy, pale green to pink bladder-like galls. Mature galls develop a chalky white bloom of basidiospores before browning and hardening.
Overview
Azalea Leaf Gall is caused by Exobasidium vaccinii and its close relatives, members of the Exobasidiomycetes — basidiomycete fungi that produce no mushroom at all. Instead of a cap and gills, they bear their spore-producing basidia directly on the surface of galled host tissue, breaking through the plant's epidermis in a smooth white layer.
The fungus specialises in the heath family (Ericaceae), particularly azaleas, rhododendrons, blueberries and related shrubs. Infected leaves or flower parts swell into rounded or irregular fleshy masses that can be as large as a walnut, replacing the flat leaf entirely.
The galls are visually striking: waxy, firm, often blushed pink or red on the sunlit side, and quite unlike any insect gall on the same shrubs. Their pale colour and smooth texture, followed by the powdery white spore bloom, make identification straightforward.

Galls
Galls range from small thickened patches on a leaf margin to entire leaves or buds converted into rounded, bladder-like masses 1-4 cm across. Young galls are pale green, cream, or flushed pink to rose-red, with a smooth waxy surface and firm, fleshy texture.
Spore layer
As the gall matures a chalky white bloom spreads over its surface — a continuous hymenium of basidia producing spores directly on the outside of the tissue. Afterwards the gall dries, turning brown to almost black, hard and wrinkled, and may persist on the twig for months.
Affected organs
Leaves, leaf buds, and sometimes flower parts and young stem tips are all susceptible; on some hosts the flower petals become thickened and distorted rather than the leaves.
Spore print
Not taken in the usual way; the white bloom on the gall surface is itself the spore layer.
Where and when it grows
The fungus occurs on shrubs in the family Ericaceae — evergreen and deciduous azaleas, rhododendrons, blueberries, cranberries and related genera. It appears on the newest growth: expanding leaves, unopened buds and flower parts.
It is common in gardens, parks and native heath or acid woodland where these shrubs grow, across North America, Europe and eastern Asia. Galls form in spring and early summer, favoured by cool, humid, shaded conditions and dense plantings with poor air movement. Old blackened galls remain on the plant afterwards and provide the inoculum for the following spring.
Ecological role
Exobasidium vaccinii is a biotrophic parasite: it lives entirely on living host tissue and never kills the shrub. Its mycelium grows between the cells of a developing leaf or bud, releasing growth-regulating compounds that cause the tissue to enlarge and thicken enormously while remaining alive and functional.
When the gall is mature, hyphae push through the epidermis and form a layer of basidia on the exterior, releasing basidiospores into the air. These spores land on newly forming buds, where the fungus can persist quietly until the buds expand the following spring, completing an annual cycle tied closely to the host's own growth flush.
Similar species
Insect galls on azalea and rhododendron are usually hard, woody or hairy, are attached to an otherwise normal leaf, and reveal a larval chamber when cut. Exobasidium galls are the swollen leaf or bud itself — soft, fleshy, hollow-celled and uniform inside.
Rhododendron bud blast blackens and bristles the flower buds with dark stalked structures instead of swelling them. Powdery mildew coats leaves in a removable white film rather than forming a mass, and the white bloom of Exobasidium appears only on an already swollen gall. Related species such as Exobasidium camelliae on camellia produce very similar galls but are separated by host plant.
