Bearded Fieldcap Identification Guide
How to work through Agrocybe molesta in spring grassland: the pale cracking cap with its fringed veil margin, tobacco-brown gills with white edges, and white rhizomorphs at the base. Includes the fine separation from Agrocybe praecox and other grassland mushrooms.
The Setting
Open, disturbed, grassy ground in spring. Roadside verges, park edges, mown lawns, field margins, allotments, gardens, gravelly waste places and wood-chipped borders. April to June is the core season, with occasional appearances in a mild autumn.
Fruit bodies usually come several together, sometimes in a rough line along a verge or a loose arc in turf, wherever the soil is rich in old grass thatch. Characteristically they push straight up through the sward, so the cap frequently arrives with crumbs of soil and fragments of dead grass stuck to it.
First Impression
A firm, pale, thick-fleshed mushroom that looks solid rather than delicate — nothing about it flexes or flops. From several paces the cap reads as an ivory or dirty-white disc sitting low over the grass. Close up, two things stand out: the surface is often broken into a crazed mosaic of cracks, and the margin is trimmed with hanging white shreds, the fringe that gives the species its common name.
The Cap
Four to ten centimetres across, sometimes twelve. It begins hemispherical or bluntly conical, expands through convex to broadly flat, and often keeps a low broad hump and a slightly uneven, wavy outline rather than a perfect circle.
The surface is dry and matt, whitish to cream or pale buff, sometimes with a warmer ochre or tan wash over the centre. It commonly cracks: in dry weather into large angular plates like the bed of a drying puddle, in damper conditions into fine wrinkles, and occasionally not at all. The flesh beneath is thick and firm, and the cap does not bend easily when you press the margin.
Check the margin first. It carries ragged white to cream fragments of the partial veil hanging as a fringe. Heavy rain washes them away and they are often gone from old specimens, so look at the youngest fruit bodies in the group before deciding the feature is absent.
The Gills
Attached to the stalk — adnate, often with a shallow notch where they meet it. Crowded, moderately broad, and even in width.
The colour progression is straightforward and worth following: pallid grey-white or cream when young, then dull clay, then a warm tobacco or cigar brown at maturity. They never pass through pink, never become bright rust, never go black. Under a lens the edges remain noticeably paler and finely fringed, so a mature gill looks brown across the face with a fine white line along its edge.
The Stipe
Four to nine centimetres by half a centimetre to one and a half, cylindrical or slightly thickened toward the base, solid and fibrous rather than hollow, and white to cream, often browning at the very base with age and handling.
Above the middle there is usually the remains of a ring — sometimes a narrow membranous collar, more often a collapsed fibrillose ring zone that catches falling spores and turns brown as a result. It is fragile and frequently disappears entirely, so a bare stalk is not an objection provided the cap margin is fringed. Below the ring zone the surface is finely fibrillose to nearly smooth; above it, faintly striate.
The Base and Its Substrate Connection
Lever the mushroom out with a knife rather than pulling it, and take a little soil with it. In a good excavation you will see white cord-like mycelial strands — rhizomorphs — running out from the stalk base into the soil, binding grass roots and old stems into a loose mat. Their presence points firmly to this genus and away from several look-alikes that come out of the ground clean.
Flesh and Colour Change
Slice the mushroom lengthwise. The flesh is white, thick through the cap centre, and firm and fibrous in the stalk. It does not change colour on cutting or bruising: no reddening, no blueing, no yellowing, no slow blackening. If your mushroom does any of those things, it is not this one.
The smell is mealy, or farinaceous, like fresh dough or cut cucumber, and it is strongest on the freshly cut surface — crush a fragment of the stalk flesh between finger and thumb to release it.
Taking a Spore Print
Cut a fresh mature cap, lay it gills-down on white paper, cover it, and leave three to six hours. The deposit is a dull brown, described variously as tobacco, cigar-brown or clay-brown, sometimes with a faint purplish or greyish cast when the deposit is thick.
Read it against alternatives deliberately. It is not the deep chocolate-brown with purple depth of Agaricus; not the rusty orange of Pholiota or Conocybe; not pink, as in Pluteus, Volvariella or Entoloma; and not white, as in Melanoleuca, Clitocybe or Leucoagaricus.
Under a microscope the spores are ellipsoid, smooth, thick-walled, and clearly truncated at one end by a broad germ pore, roughly 9–13 by 6–7.5 micrometres. That germ pore is easy to see and is a good confirmation.
Substrate, Ecology and Season
The fungus is saprotrophic, living on the accumulated dead grass, roots and plant debris in the top layer of soil, which is why it favours ground that is grassy but disturbed — verges, mown edges, cultivated margins and mulched beds. The rhizomorph system lets it spread through that layer and then fruit in flushes when spring rain and rising soil temperature coincide.
Peak fruiting is April to June, with the earliest fruit bodies appearing while the grass is still short. The species is widespread across Europe and North America in comparable habitats.
Separating It from Look-alikes
Agrocybe praecox. The closest relative and the commonest confusion, sharing the season and the grassy habitat. It tends to be a warmer ochre-tan across the cap, less prone to dramatic cracking, and its ring is more often a persistent membranous band rather than a collapsing zone; its rhizomorphs are usually very well developed. Cap colour, degree of cracking and ring persistence are the practical separators, and intermediate collections genuinely exist.
Agrocybe pediades. Much smaller, one to three centimetres, with a smooth ochre-yellow cap, no veil and no ring, scattered in short grass.
Agrocybe putaminum. On wood chips and mulch, with a tan cap and no fringe of veil on the margin.
Cyclocybe (Agrocybe) cylindracea. Clustered on the wood of poplar, willow and elder rather than in soil, with a distinct persistent ring and a long tapering stalk.
Agaricus species. Gills free from the stalk, so they can be seen to stop short of it, a chocolate-brown print, gills passing through pink on the way to brown, and usually a well-formed ring.
Stropharia coronilla. Yellowish cap, a persistent ring with striations on its upper surface, greyish-violet gills, and a purple-brown print.
Melanoleuca and Clitocybe species. White spore prints and no veil at all.
Volvariella and Pluteus. Pink prints and free gills, with a sac-like volva at the base in Volvariella.
Lepista and Entoloma. Pink to pinkish-buff prints, and in Entoloma angular spores under the microscope.
