A small pale milkcap of sandy birch ground, recognised by its almost unzoned whitish-pink cap, finely downy inrolled margin and unchanging white latex.

Overview

Lactarius pubescens is the smaller, paler counterpart of the Woolly Milkcap. Both are birch associates with hairy cap margins, but where L. torminosus is strongly pink and boldly banded with a shaggy fringe, L. pubescens is a washed-out cream to pale pinkish-buff, essentially without concentric zoning, and its marginal hairs are short and downy rather than matted and shaggy.

It is characteristically a fungus of poor, sandy ground: birch on dune slacks, sandy heathland, gravel pits, roadside verges and disturbed open ground where young birches have seeded in. It is often found on more exposed, sunnier sites than its larger relative and can fruit under quite young saplings.

As a Lactarius it shows the genus signature of latex-bearing flesh, brittle granular tissue and gills that snap rather than bend, along with the absence of any ring or volva. Its latex is white and stays white, an important character in a genus where colour change in the milk is one of the main identification tools.

How to identify it

Cap

The cap is 3–8 cm across, convex with an inrolled margin at first, later flattening and becoming shallowly depressed. Colour is a pale cream to whitish-pink or pale flesh-buff, usually deepening only slightly toward the centre, and concentric zoning is faint or entirely absent. The surface is dry to slightly viscid at the disc, and the margin carries a fine, short, downy covering of hairs rather than a coarse shaggy fringe.

Gills

Gills are adnate to shortly decurrent, crowded, narrow, and white to pale cream with a faint pinkish or buff tinge. They bruise to a dull brownish tone and often carry chalky dried latex along damaged edges.

Stipe

The stipe is 2–6 cm tall and 0.8–1.5 cm thick, cylindrical or tapering downward, whitish to pale pink, smooth, and often finely downy at the extreme base where it holds sand grains. It is stuffed and becomes hollow. There is no ring, no volva and no bulb.

Flesh & spore print

Flesh is white, brittle, sometimes faintly pink under the cuticle. Broken tissue exudes white latex that remains white and does not yellow on flesh or paper. The spore print is cream, and the spores are warty with partial ridge connections.

Where and when it grows

This milkcap is a birch associate with a strong preference for open, sandy and disturbed ground. It is characteristic of coastal dune slacks with creeping birch and young birch scrub, sandy heaths, gravel workings, quarry edges and grassy woodland margins, and it will fruit under saplings only a few years old.

It occurs across northern and temperate Europe, including Britain and Ireland, north into Scandinavia, and through northern Asia and North America wherever birches grow on light soils. Fruiting runs from late summer through autumn, in small scattered troops or singly, and it frequently appears alongside other sand-loving birch fungi.

Ecological role

Lactarius pubescens is ectomycorrhizal with birch, and its association with pioneer birch on nutrient-poor sand puts it among the early colonising fungi of open ground. The fungal mantle over fine root tips and the internal Hartig net allow the exchange of soil nutrients and water for tree sugars, and in loose dune and gravel substrates the extensive exploratory mycelium also helps stabilise the surface layer.

The short downy hairs on the cap margin protect the young gill surface during expansion, and the pressurised white latex seals damaged tissue and deters invertebrate grazing. Fruiting bodies are relatively small and decompose quickly, feeding fungus gnats, mites and springtails whose movements distribute spores through the thin litter.

Similar species

Lactarius torminosus is the main confusion: it is larger, distinctly pink, clearly marked with concentric zones and has a coarsely shaggy rather than finely downy margin, and it tends to occur in more closed birch woodland. Intermediate specimens exist, so size, zoning and the texture of the marginal hairs should be assessed together.

Lactarius glyciosmus, the Coconut Milkcap, also grows with birch but is smaller and greyish-lilac with a dry, faintly scurfy cap and no fringed margin. Lactarius controversus is far larger and heavier, whitish with pink blotches and pink gills, and it grows with poplar and willow. Lactarius mairei has a coarsely scaly-hairy margin and an oak association.
