An abundant beechwood milkcap with a slimy olive-grey cap patterned with dark, droplet-like concentric spots. Its copious white latex dries grey on the gills.

Overview

The Beech Milkcap is the default milkcap of European beechwoods, often carpeting the litter beneath mature beech in autumn. Its cap is a cool olive-grey to grey-green, viscid and slippery in damp weather, and characteristically patterned with darker watery spots arranged in loose concentric rings, as though droplets had dried on the surface.

It belongs to the group of grey and olive milkcaps with copious white latex that dries grey, alongside the Grey Milkcap of birch. Its heavier build, olive tone and pronounced sliminess set it apart from that species and from the paler beech-associated milkcaps.

Because it is both abundant and closely tied to a single host, it functions as a useful marker: extensive troops of these fruitbodies almost always mean beech roots below, even in mixed plantings.

How to identify it

Cap

4–10 cm across, convex with a strongly inrolled margin when young, expanding to flat and then shallowly depressed. The surface is smooth and distinctly viscid to slimy when moist, drying shiny, and coloured olive-grey, grey-green, greyish buff or occasionally almost pale ochre-grey. Most fruitbodies show darker olive to blackish watery spots and blotches arranged in loose concentric bands, a very useful character.

Gills

Crowded, narrow, adnate to slightly decurrent, white to pale cream at first and ageing buff. They stain grey where bruised or where latex has dried on them.

Stipe

Short and rather stout relative to the cap, 3–6 cm tall and 1–2 cm thick, pale greyish white to buff, smooth, slimy when wet, becoming stuffed then hollow. It is often slightly narrowed at the base.

Flesh and latex

The flesh is white, firm and brittle. Latex is copious and pure white when it emerges, drying grey to grey-green on the gills and on any damaged surface within minutes — the key confirming feature. Odour is faint or negligible. Spore deposit white to pale cream.

Where and when it grows

This species is almost exclusively associated with beech, growing on soil among leaf litter in beech woodland, beech avenues, mixed woods containing beech and on chalk and clay soils alike. It fruits abundantly on the deep litter of mature beech stands and along shaded woodland banks.

The season runs from late summer to late autumn, with a strong peak from September to early November. It is very common and widespread throughout the beech-growing regions of Europe, and follows planted beech into areas beyond its native range.

Ecological role

The Beech Milkcap is ectomycorrhizal, forming sheathing mycorrhizas on the fine roots of Fagus. Beech casts deep shade and produces slow-rotting litter, and its mycorrhizal partners are important in liberating nitrogen and phosphorus from that litter and mineral soil, delivering them to the tree in exchange for photosynthetic carbon.

As one of the most abundant fungi in beechwoods, it contributes a large seasonal pulse of fruitbody biomass consumed by slugs, fungus gnats and small mammals. Its viscid cap surface helps retain moisture and may aid spore release in dry spells, while the copious grey-drying latex seals wounds and deters grazing on the gill tissue.

Similar species

Lactarius fluens is the closest relative, also under beech, but has a darker centre with a distinctly pale marginal band, less obvious spotting and a less slimy surface. The Grey Milkcap (Lactarius vietus) is thinner-fleshed, more lilac-grey, less slimy and grows under birch.

Lactarius circellatus is browner with clearer concentric zoning and grows with hornbeam, while Lactarius pallidus is uniformly pale pinkish ochre without spots. Checking for the grey-drying latex and the presence of beech resolves most of these.
