A compact scarlet brittlegill restricted to beech woods, distinguished from its conifer relatives by firmer flesh, a matt cap whose skin peels only part-way, and crowded white gills.

Overview

Beechwood Sickener (Russula nobilis, long known as R. mairei) is the beech-wood member of the red brittlegill complex. Where R. emetica haunts wet conifer bogs, this species is a creature of dry beech litter on chalk and clay, and it is often the commonest red Russula in a mature beech hanger.

It is a smaller, tougher, more solidly built mushroom than R. emetica, and the difference is obvious in the hand: the cap resists denting, the stipe is short and firm, and the whole fruiting body holds its shape for longer. The name nobilis refers to this stouter, more substantial build. Nomenclatural work over recent decades has moved this taxon between names — mairei, nobilis, and at times fageticola has been bundled with it — so both binomials appear widely in the literature.

As with all brittlegills, its flesh is built from clusters of rounded sphaerocyst cells rather than long fibres, which is why it snaps rather than tears, and why Russula fruiting bodies never peel into strings the way a Pleurotus or Armillaria does.

How to identify it

Cap

3–7 cm across, convex then flat and finally slightly depressed, firm and rather thick-fleshed. The colour is a strong scarlet to crimson, generally with a matt to only slightly shining finish rather than the greasy gloss of R. emetica, and it commonly fades in blotches to pinkish, ochre-cream or nearly white — particularly at the centre and in dry weather. The margin stays smooth or only faintly furrowed. The cuticle peels only about a third to halfway to the centre and comes away in short strips.

Gills

White, becoming very pale cream at most, narrow and noticeably crowded compared with other red brittlegills. Attachment is adnexed to nearly free. Some collections show a faint blue-green cast to the gill edges seen against the light. They are brittle and shatter readily.

Stipe

2.5–6 cm tall and 1–2 cm thick, short in proportion to the cap, cylindrical to slightly swollen at the base, white and dry, sometimes greying faintly at the base with age. No ring and no volva. The interior becomes softly stuffed then partly hollow, and the stipe snaps cleanly.

Flesh & spore print

The flesh is white and firm, with a thin red layer beneath the cap skin, and does not change colour on cutting. The odour is faint, often described as reminiscent of coconut or of honey in fresh specimens. The spore print is white to very pale cream; spores are ellipsoid with warts linked in a partial network.

Where and when it grows

This species is very closely tied to beech (Fagus sylvatica in Europe), fruiting in leaf litter and on the bare humus beneath mature trees. It shows a preference for the calcareous and clay soils that beech itself favours, appearing on chalk downland woods, beech hangers and mixed woodland where beech is present. It is only rarely reported away from beech.

It is common and widespread through western, central and northern Europe wherever beech grows, and turns up in planted beech avenues and parkland as well as in natural woodland. Fruiting begins in mid-summer and continues into autumn, with the best flushes after rain in warm late-summer weather; it typically appears earlier in the season than many other brittlegills of the same woods.

Ecological role

Russula nobilis is ectomycorrhizal with beech. Its hyphae envelop the tree's short roots in a sheath and grow between the outer root cells, greatly extending the volume of soil the tree can exploit and delivering water, phosphorus, nitrogen and trace elements in exchange for photosynthetic sugars. Beech is a heavily mycorrhiza-dependent tree, and Russula species collectively form a large share of the fungal community on its roots.

Because it depends on a living partner, this brittlegill fruits only within the rooting zone of established beech and disappears if the trees are removed. The fruiting bodies decay quickly and are consumed by slugs, fungus gnats and beetle larvae, feeding nutrients back into the litter layer; the perennial mycelium, meanwhile, persists in the soil year-round and may occupy the same patch of root system for many seasons.

Similar species

Russula emetica is the main confusion: it is larger, more slender, with a glossy sticky scarlet cap whose skin peels almost to the centre, and it grows in wet Sphagnum and mossy conifer woods rather than beech litter. Russula fageticola also occurs under beech but tends to a darker, more purple-red cap, a longer-grooved cap margin and more widely spaced gills.

Russula betularum is much paler — washed-out pink to almost white — smaller, and grows on damp acid soil with birch. Russula rosea (R. lepida) can occur in the same beech woods but is far firmer, with a dry, chalky-matt cap surface, a cuticle that barely peels at all, and a stipe frequently flushed pink. Habitat, degree of cuticle peeling and gill spacing separate them all without needing microscopy.
