A thimble fungus with a smooth to faintly wrinkled brown bell-shaped cap attached only at the top of a slender pale stalk. The free-hanging margin and pith-filled stalk separate it from the true morels.
Overview
Verpa conica is the type species of Verpa, a genus of spring ascomycetes in the Morchellaceae. Its fruiting body looks like a small brown thimble balanced on a pale stick: the cap is joined to the stalk only at the apex, and its entire margin flares free, often standing clear of the stalk by a centimetre or more.
Where its relative Verpa bohemica has a strongly ribbed and wrinkled cap, the bell morel's cap is essentially smooth, at most shallowly and irregularly folded near the top. That smoothness, combined with the free bell and the loosely stuffed stalk, forms a compact set of characters that is easy to check in the field.
The species is widespread across Europe and North America and is often found in scrubby, edge-of-woodland places rather than deep forest, including hedgerows, dune scrub and old plantations. It is also known under the name Verpa digitaliformis, a reference to the thimble-like cap.
How to identify it
Cap
The cap is bell- to thimble-shaped, 1.5-4 cm tall and slightly narrower than tall, with a rounded or bluntly conical apex. Its outer surface is smooth to slightly uneven, sometimes with a few shallow, irregular folds radiating from the top, but never with the branching ribs of V. bohemica or the pits of a morel. Colour is olive-brown, warm brown, tan or dark chestnut, generally darker at the apex and paler toward the margin. The cap is attached only at the stalk apex; the free margin flares outward and often lifts clear of the stalk, and the underside is pale, smooth and whitish.
Stipe
The stalk is 4-10 cm long and slender, white to cream or pale yellowish, and finely mealy or scurfy, sometimes with faint transverse bands of granules. Internally it is stuffed with soft, cottony pith when young; in age the pith may partly collapse to leave loose cavities, but the stalk is not a clean hollow tube.
Flesh & spore deposit
The flesh is thin, whitish and fragile, with no marked colour change on cutting. A spore deposit is cream to pale yellow. Microscopically the asci hold the normal eight spores, of ordinary size, in clear contrast to the two enormous spores per ascus in V. bohemica.
Where and when it grows
The bell morel grows on soil and litter in open, scrubby and edge habitats: hedgerows, woodland margins, thickets, coastal dune scrub, calcareous grassland with scattered bushes, parkland and old plantations. It is frequently reported under hawthorn, blackthorn, elder, ash, willow and other shrubs and small trees, often on the mossy ground beneath them, and it favours base-rich or calcareous soils in many parts of its range.
Fruiting occurs in spring, typically a little later than V. bohemica and roughly overlapping with the earlier morels. Fruiting bodies are usually solitary or in small scattered groups rather than in large troops, and they are easily overlooked among leaf litter and moss. The species occurs widely across Europe, parts of Asia and North America.
Ecological role
Verpa conica is understood to be mainly saprotrophic, breaking down leaf litter, buried twigs and fine organic debris in the soil beneath shrubs and small trees. Its recurring association with particular hosts such as hawthorn and elder has prompted speculation about a looser relationship with living roots, but no strong mycorrhizal partnership has been established.
Spores develop in asci covering the smooth outer surface of the cap and are discharged into the air, sometimes visibly as a puff of smoke when a ripe specimen is disturbed. Fruiting in early spring lets the fungus take advantage of soil moisture and cool conditions before shrub canopies leaf out. In hedgerow and dune-scrub communities it forms part of the litter-decomposing guild that recycles nutrients back to the shallow rooting zone of the shrubs above it.
Similar species
Verpa bohemica is the immediate comparison and differs in its clearly ribbed and longitudinally wrinkled cap, generally larger size, earlier fruiting and riparian habitat under cottonwood, aspen and willow, plus its two-spored asci and giant spores under the microscope.
Morchella punctipes has a genuinely pitted cap attached around its middle so that only the lower half hangs free, and a cleanly hollow stalk. True morels have caps fused to the rim with a pitted honeycomb surface. Small Helvella species can present a similar brown cap on a pale stalk but their caps are saddle-shaped, lobed or irregularly folded and attached at more than one point, and many have ribbed or fluted stalks rather than smooth mealy ones.
