Birch Brittlegill Identification Guide
A practical route to naming the Birch Brittlegill, covering its washed-out pink cap, chalky brittle flesh, near-white spore print and the birch bog habitat that anchors the identification.
The setting and the first look
You are in damp birch woodland or on the edge of a wet heath, walking over sphagnum, polytrichum and bilberry on acid, peaty soil. Scattered through the moss are small, pale, faintly pink mushrooms that look almost translucent when wet. Pick one up and it feels fragile, almost weightless, and a careless grip crumbles the gills.
That combination of small size, washed-out rose colouring, extreme brittleness and a strict association with birch on wet acid ground is the working profile of the Birch Brittlegill. It is a common fungus in the right country, often present in dozens across a single boggy birch stand.
Reading the cap
The cap is small for the genus, usually 2 to 5 cm across. It is convex when young, expands flat and then becomes shallowly depressed at the centre, and it is thin-fleshed enough that the shape sags and warps with handling.
Colour is delicate: pale rose, coral pink or a pale wine flush, and characteristically much paler or nearly white at the very centre, so the disc looks bleached against a pinker margin. Rain washes the colour out further, and a soaked specimen can be almost entirely whitish with only a hint of pink at the rim. The surface is smooth and slightly viscid when moist, drying matt.
Two margin characters are worth checking. First, the edge becomes distinctly grooved with age, the grooves often lumpy or bead-like, a feature described as tuberculate-striate. Second, the cuticle peels easily and almost completely towards the centre, which is a quick and useful test in this genus.
The gills
The gills are white and stay white or at most go palest cream, which matters because gill colour in this group tracks spore colour. They are moderately spaced rather than crowded, adnexed to almost free, and of even depth with no significant forking except occasionally at the very stem.
The critical property is texture. Draw a fingernail across them and they shatter into fragments instead of bending or tearing in strips. That granular fracture comes from the rounded cells packed through the tissue, and it is the character that defines the brittlegills as a group.
Stipe, base and the snap test
The stem is 2 to 5 cm long and 5 to 10 mm thick, cylindrical or very slightly club-shaped, pure white, dry and finely wrinkled lengthwise. With age it becomes stuffed and then hollow, and the base can discolour to pale grey or dingy cream in old specimens.
Now perform the classic test: hold the stem at both ends and bend it. A brittlegill stem snaps cleanly and abruptly like a stick of chalk, with a flat break face, rather than splitting into fibrous strands. Roll a fragment between finger and thumb and it crumbles. Any mushroom whose stem shreds into stringy fibres is not in this group.
At the base look for white mycelial down binding moss and peat, and confirm the absence of a ring, a sheath, a volva or any veil remnants on the cap margin.
Flesh and reactions
The flesh is white, thin and watery, and it stays white when cut. Old, waterlogged fruitbodies may go faintly greyish in the stem base but there is no strong colour change, no reddening and no blackening. There is no latex whatsoever; cut a gill across and nothing exudes. That single check separates the brittlegills instantly from their close relatives the milkcaps, which weep a latex droplet.
The smell is faint and slightly fruity or unremarkable in fresh material.
Taking and reading the spore print
Spore print colour is the backbone of brittlegill identification, and it needs to be done properly. Small caps give thin deposits, so use the largest mature cap you have, cut it free of the stem, and lay it gill side down on white paper with a piece of clear glass beside it. Cover with a bowl and leave it four to eight hours out of any draught.
When the print is down, scrape it into a thick ridge with a blade before you judge the colour, and read it in natural daylight against the white paper. The Birch Brittlegill gives a white to palest cream deposit, at the very whitest end of the standard colour scales. A print that is clearly ochre or egg-yolk yellow rules the species out immediately.
Substrate, associates and season
This is an ectomycorrhizal partner of birch, so the tree is not optional context but part of the identification. It grows on damp to genuinely wet acid soils, in sphagnum lawns, birch carr, boggy heath margins and the moss beneath scattered downy or silver birch on peat.
The season runs from midsummer to late autumn, roughly July into November, with heavy flushes after wet spells. Fruitbodies come up singly or scattered through the moss rather than in tight clusters, and they decay quickly, so material more than a couple of days old is usually too far gone for the cuticle-peel and snap tests to read cleanly.
Separating it from look-alikes
Russula emetica. Bigger, up to 8 or 10 cm, and a much more saturated scarlet or cherry red that does not bleach to near-white at the centre in the same way. Its stem is stouter, its flesh firmer, and it favours sphagnum under conifers, particularly pine and spruce, rather than pure birch.
Russula fragilis. Overlaps in size and fragility, but the cap is a darker and more variegated purple, vinaceous or olive mixture, typically with a distinctly dark, almost blackish centre rather than a pale one. Under a hand lens its gill edges are finely serrated, which the Birch Brittlegill lacks, and it associates with a wider range of trees including oak and beech.
Russula nobilis (R. mairei). A beech species. Firmer and more compact throughout, with a bright red cap, a short thick white stem and denser flesh that does not have the watery fragility of the birch species.
Russula gracillima. Another birch associate, but its cap mixes pink with grey, olive and buff into a patchy, streaky effect, and the stem is often flushed pink rather than pure white.
Russula aquosa and other sphagnum species. These grow in the same wet moss but tend towards livid pinkish brown, greyish or ochre-brown tones with very watery flesh and a longer, more fragile stem.
Mycena and Laccaria species. Superficially similar in size and colour in the moss, but their stems are cartilaginous and fibrous, bending or splitting rather than snapping like chalk, and the gill tissue tears instead of shattering.
