A small tawny orange-brown birch associate with a matt, slightly wrinkled cap and a small pointed umbo. Its scanty white latex slowly turns yellow when smeared on a white tissue.
Overview
The Birch Milkcap is one of the commonest small milkcaps of damp northern woodland, appearing in scattered numbers through moss and litter wherever birch grows on wet acidic ground. It is a modest fungus: a tawny orange-brown cap barely a few centimetres across on a slim brittle stipe, easily mistaken for any of several similar species until its latex is tested.
It belongs to the section of Lactarius with latex that slowly yellows, but the reaction here is weak and slow compared with the dramatic instant change of the Yellowdrop Milkcap. The classic field method is to smear a drop of milk onto a white handkerchief or tissue and watch it develop a pale yellow tone over a minute or two.
Its long season, small size and preference for wet mossy ground make it a familiar sight from summer right through to the first frosts.
How to identify it
Cap
Small, 2–5 cm across, convex then flattening and often shallowly depressed while retaining a small pointed central umbo. The surface is dry, matt, often finely wrinkled or minutely roughened toward the centre, and coloured tawny orange-brown, warm ochre-tan or reddish buff, fading paler at the margin. The margin is thin and often becomes faintly grooved or striate with age.
Gills
Adnate to slightly decurrent, moderately crowded to somewhat distant, pale ochre buff with a pinkish tint, darkening with age and spotting brownish where damaged.
Stipe
Slender and brittle, 3–6 cm tall and 4–10 mm thick, cylindrical, smooth, coloured like the cap or paler toward the apex, soon hollow. The base is often bound with whitish mycelium and moss fragments.
Flesh and latex
The flesh is pale buff, thin and brittle. Latex is white and scanty, and its diagnostic behaviour is a slow, weak change to pale yellow — best demonstrated on a white tissue rather than on the gills, where the reaction can be hard to see. Odour is faint and not distinctive. Spore deposit pale cream.
Where and when it grows
This milkcap grows on damp acidic soils under birch, in birch woodland, scrub, heath with scattered birch and along boggy woodland margins. It fruits through sphagnum, moss carpets and leaf litter, and also appears occasionally with other broadleaf trees and conifers in mixed stands.
Its season is unusually long, spanning summer through to late autumn, and it can be found after any prolonged wet spell. It is common and widespread across northern and central Europe and Scandinavia, with comparable populations in northern Asia and northern North America.
Ecological role
The Birch Milkcap is ectomycorrhizal with birch, sheathing the host's fine roots and extending hyphae into peaty and mossy substrates. Because birch colonises poor, acidic and disturbed ground, its mycorrhizal fungi carry much of the burden of nutrient acquisition, mobilising nitrogen and phosphorus locked in slow-decaying organic matter.
Its small fruitbodies appear across a long season and in large cumulative numbers, providing a steady rather than a pulsed resource for fungus-feeding invertebrates. The yellowing latex is produced by pressurised laticifers in the flesh and serves the usual wound-sealing and grazing-deterrent role, oxidising to a hardening deposit at the point of damage.
Similar species
Lactarius subdulcis under beech is similar in size and colour but its latex stays white and it lacks the pointed umbo, growing in beech litter rather than birch moss. The Oakbug Milkcap (Lactarius quietus) is larger, faintly zoned, has unchanging latex and a heavy oily odour, and grows only with oak.
The Yellowdrop Milkcap (Lactarius chrysorrheus) yellows instantly and vividly rather than slowly, is larger and paler pink-buff, and grows with oak. Lactarius hepaticus is darker liver-brown, associated with pine, and yellows more distinctly on tissue.
