Black-footed Polypore

A stalked polypore with a polished chestnut-brown, funnel-shaped cap and minute white pores, recognised instantly by the inky black lower half of its stem.
Overview
The Black-footed Polypore is one of the classic stalked polypores of temperate woodland, a group once bundled together in the genus Polyporus and now split among several segregate genera. Current classifications place this species in Picipes, a small genus in the family Polyporaceae whose members share a central to off-centre stipe, tiny white pores that run down the stem, and a stipe base darkened to a hard, tarry black.
What sets this species apart from its relatives is the surface of the cap. Rather than the matt, scurfy or scaly finish seen in most stalked polypores, the cap of Picipes badius is smooth, thin, and distinctly polished, so that a mature specimen looks varnished or oiled. Combined with the rich chestnut to almost black colouring and the strongly wavy, lobed margin, this gives the fungus a leathery, almost lacquered appearance that is hard to confuse once known.
Ecologically it is a wood-rotting saprotroph, one of the many polypores responsible for breaking down fallen hardwood in damp deciduous forests. It is common and widespread across Europe, temperate Asia and North America, fruiting reliably on the same logs year after year until the wood is consumed.
How to identify it
Cap
The cap is 5 to 20 cm across, at first convex, soon flattening and then becoming shallowly funnel-shaped or centrally depressed. The surface is smooth, bald and noticeably shiny, especially when moist, and is deep chestnut to reddish-brown, usually darkening almost to blackish-brown at the centre while remaining paler tan or ochre toward the rim. The margin is thin, sharp, and characteristically wavy and lobed, often becoming split with age.
Pores
The underside carries a layer of extremely fine pores, roughly 5 to 8 per millimetre, so small that the surface can look almost smooth to the naked eye and needs a hand lens to resolve. The pore surface is white to cream, ageing pale buff, and runs a short distance down the stipe rather than stopping abruptly at its junction. Tubes are shallow, typically 1 to 2 mm deep.
Stipe
The stipe is 2 to 8 cm long and 0.5 to 1.5 cm thick, central to markedly off-centre or even lateral depending on how the fruit body has grown out of the log. The upper part is pale buff to brownish, but the lower portion is abruptly and conspicuously black, with a hard, smooth, almost tarry finish. This black boot is the single most useful field mark.
Flesh and spore print
The flesh is thin, white to pale cream, and tough and pliant when fresh, drying hard and rigid. It does not change colour appreciably when cut or bruised. The spore deposit is white.
Where and when it grows
This polypore is a decomposer of dead deciduous wood, fruiting from fallen logs, stumps, large branches and occasionally the exposed dead roots of standing trees. Preferred substrates include beech, ash, willow, poplar, alder, maple and elm, and it will also appear on other broadleaves. Fruit bodies frequently emerge from the underside or cut end of a log, which is why the stipe is so often eccentric or sideways rather than neatly central.
It favours damp, shaded, humid woodland, and is particularly frequent in riparian woods and along stream banks where fallen wood stays moist. Fruiting runs from late spring through autumn, peaking in warm wet spells, and the tough dried caps can persist on the log for weeks after spore release. The species is broadly distributed across the north temperate zone, being common in Europe, widespread in temperate Asia, and well represented across much of North America.
Ecological role
Picipes badius is a saprotroph that produces a white rot, its enzymes degrading lignin as well as cellulose so that the colonised wood becomes pale, soft, and fibrous or stringy. It typically enters wood that is already dead and lying on the forest floor, spreading through the sapwood and heartwood as a resource-limited coloniser rather than as an aggressive competitor.
In the wider ecosystem this decay work returns carbon and mineral nutrients locked in heavy hardwood back into the soil, and the softened, moisture-holding rotten wood becomes habitat for beetle larvae, springtails, mites and other invertebrates. The fruit bodies themselves are annual, appearing when temperature and moisture align, releasing white spores from the shallow tubes, and then drying to a hard leathery disc that may remain attached into the following season.
Similar species
The closest confusion is with Cerioporus varius (long known as Polyporus varius or Polyporus leptocephalus), which also has a black-based stipe. That species is smaller and thinner, and its cap is a dull ochre-tan to honey-brown, matt rather than polished, so it lacks the deep varnished chestnut tones of the Black-footed Polypore. Picipes melanopus likewise has a blackened stem but grows from buried wood and appears to arise from soil, with a duller, more greyish-brown to smoke-coloured cap that is often finely roughened rather than smooth.
Cerioporus squamosus is far larger, with a broad kidney-shaped cap covered in coarse flattened brown scales, a stubby lateral stipe, and much bigger angular pores visible without a lens. Polyporus tuberaster is separated by its scaly, fringed cap margin and by arising from a hard underground sclerotium of soil-bound mycelium. Where any doubt remains, the combination of a smooth glossy dark cap, near-invisible white pores and a sharply demarcated black stipe base is diagnostic here.
