Black Morel
Morchella elata

A conical spring morel whose pits are arranged in vertical ladder-like rows between ridges that darken to grey, olive or black. Like all true morels it is hollow throughout with the head fused to the stalk.
Overview
The Black Morel is the dark counterpart of the yellow morels and is often the first morel of the season. Its head is typically taller and narrower - conical or bullet-shaped rather than rounded - and its most useful feature is the arrangement of the pits, which tend to line up in columns separated by prominent vertical ridges, with shorter cross-ridges producing a ladder-like grid.
The name Morchella elata has traditionally been applied broadly, but molecular studies have shown the black morels to be a large complex of species including M. angusticeps, M. importuna, M. septimelata, M. tomentosa and M. brunnea, many of which are effectively indistinguishable without sequencing. Field guides generally treat them as a group defined by dark ridges and vertical pit alignment.
Black morels are famous for their response to disturbance, particularly fire. In many regions they fruit in spectacular numbers on ground burnt the previous summer, and in landscaped settings they appear readily on fresh wood chip and bark mulch.
How to identify it
Head
Conical to narrowly egg-shaped or bullet-like, 2-9 cm tall and 2-5 cm wide, usually taller than broad and often tapering to a rounded point. The surface bears elongated pits arranged in more or less vertical rows, bounded by long primary ridges running lengthwise and shorter cross-ridges, giving a ladder or lattice pattern.
Colour
When young the whole head may be pale grey, tan or olive-brown, but the ridges darken progressively to dark grey, olive-black or black, contrasting with paler ochre, grey or yellowish pits. Ridges are often flattened, sharp-edged and sometimes look slightly scorched or dried along their crests. This ridge-darker-than-pit contrast is the key colour feature.
Attachment
A true morel: the base of the head is fused to the stalk, leaving no free hanging rim, and the interior forms one continuous hollow cavity from apex to stalk base.
Stalk
White to pale cream or greyish, becoming dingy ochre with age, hollow, often slightly enlarged, finely granular or furrowed toward the base. In some members of the complex the stalk base is markedly ridged or folded.
Flesh and spore print
Thin, brittle, whitish and waxy, hollow rather than chambered. Spore print cream to pale yellow.
Where and when it grows
Black morels occur on soil in a wide range of settings but show strong preferences for conifer woodland - especially pine, spruce, fir and Douglas fir - and for recently disturbed ground. They are strongly associated with burn sites, fruiting abundantly in the first spring after a forest fire, and also with logging debris, flood deposits, gravelly track sides, landscaped beds and fresh wood chip or bark mulch in gardens and urban plantings.
In broadleaf country they may be found under ash, poplar, cottonwood and apple, and in mixed woodland on rich or sandy soils. Fruiting is a spring event, generally slightly earlier than the yellow morels, running from March to June depending on latitude and elevation, and following an elevation gradient uphill as the season advances. The complex is widespread across Europe, North America and temperate Asia.
Ecological role
The black morels are best understood as opportunists that are ecologically flexible. Several members of the complex appear to be primarily saprotrophic, decomposing soil organic matter, litter, buried wood and charred material, while others may form loose associations with tree roots. The pyrophilous, or fire-following, habit of many species is striking: mycelium survives in soil as sclerotia, and the chemical and physical changes wrought by fire - removal of competitors, altered soil pH, released nutrients and charcoal - trigger mass fruiting the following spring.
This role makes black morels significant early colonisers in post-fire and post-disturbance succession, helping process charred organic matter and dead root systems. Spore release follows the standard ascomycete pattern: microscopic asci lining the pits discharge their spores simultaneously into the air, and a ripe head knocked in dry weather can visibly puff a cloud of pale spores.
Similar species
Yellow morels (Morchella esculenta group) are the obvious comparison. Their heads are rounder, the pits irregular rather than in vertical columns, and the ridges stay pale tan or ochre, never darkening to near-black. Both share the fused head and hollow interior of true morels.
Half-free morels (Morchella semilibera) have small dark heads attached only near the top so the lower half hangs free as a skirt, on a long stalk. Verpa bohemica and Verpa conica hang their caps free from the very apex like thimbles, with surfaces that are longitudinally wrinkled or nearly smooth rather than pitted, and their stalks are stuffed with cottony tissue. False morels (Gyromitra species) have irregularly lobed, folded, brain-like heads with no ridge-and-pit network, and a vertical cut reveals chambered, convoluted, partly stuffed interiors instead of one clean hollow.
