A clustered brown-spored wood mushroom with a smooth two-toned cap that cracks in dry weather, a pale fibrous stipe and a persistent membranous ring.

Overview

The Black Poplar Mushroom is a robust, clustered wood-inhabiting fungus of warm temperate regions, fruiting from wounds, cut ends and dead limbs of poplars and related broadleaved trees. Its name comes from the black poplar, Populus nigra, one of its characteristic hosts, and it is known in many parts of southern Europe as the pioppino.

The species has moved between genera over the years, having long been placed in Agrocybe before being transferred to Cyclocybe, a small genus of brown-spored, ringed, wood- and soil-inhabiting fungi in the Bolbitiaceae/Strophariaceae complex. The combination of a smooth dry cap, a well-formed membranous ring and tobacco-brown spores places it neatly among the fieldcaps.

It is distinctive for a two-toned cap that darkens to a rich chestnut at the centre while remaining pale buff at the rim, and for the fine crazed cracking that develops across the cap surface in warm dry weather, giving mature specimens a characteristic tiled or reptilian look.

How to identify it

Cap

The cap is 3–12 cm across, convex at first and expanding to broadly convex or almost flat, often with a low umbo and a slightly wavy margin. The surface is dry, smooth and matt, dark brown to chestnut over the centre and grading to tan, buff or nearly cream towards the rim. As it matures — particularly in warm, dry conditions — the surface develops a fine network of cracks that breaks the cuticle into small tiles, exposing paler flesh between them. The margin is inrolled when young and may carry faint veil remnants.

Gills

The gills are adnate to slightly decurrent by a tooth, crowded, and pallid to greyish-white when young, darkening steadily through clay-brown to a dull tobacco or cigar brown as the spores mature. The gill edges usually stay slightly paler.

Stipe

The stipe is 4–12 cm long and 0.5–2 cm thick, tough and fibrous, frequently curved or eccentric where fruiting bodies emerge from a vertical trunk, and often tapering into a narrow root-like extension at the base. It is whitish to pale buff, becoming brownish from the base upward with age, and bears a well-developed persistent membranous ring in the upper half. The ring commonly collects fallen brown spores on its upper surface.

Flesh and spore print

The flesh is firm and white, thick in the cap centre, with a pleasantly fungal, slightly mealy odour. The spore print is a distinctive tobacco or cigar brown, neither the rust of Pholiota nor the purple-black of Hypholoma.

Where and when it grows

The Black Poplar Mushroom fruits in dense caespitose clusters from the trunks, stumps, wounds and exposed roots of broadleaved trees, above all poplars and willows, but also elder, elm, ash, mulberry and fig. It frequently appears on standing living trees at points of injury, as well as on cut stumps and lying logs.

It is a species of warm temperate climates, common throughout the Mediterranean basin and central and southern Europe, and extending into Asia and warmer parts of North America. Its season is unusually long, running from spring through to late autumn, with flushes triggered by rain rather than tightly bound to a single month, and in mild regions it can fruit into winter.

Ecological role

The species is chiefly a saprotroph causing a white rot of hardwood, decomposing lignin and cellulose in dead trunks, stumps and roots. It is also a facultative weak parasite, able to establish through bark wounds and pruning cuts on living trees and to decay heartwood while the tree remains alive, which is why fruiting clusters often appear high on poplars that still carry a full living canopy.

In riparian woodland and old poplar plantations it is a significant agent of trunk decay, opening cavities that are subsequently used by nesting birds and invertebrates. Because the mycelium is long-lived within a colonised trunk, the same tree may produce clusters repeatedly over many years, often from the identical wound.

Similar species

Agrocybe praecox has a similar brown spore print and a ring, but fruits on the ground in grass, wood chips and disturbed soil in spring rather than in clusters on trunks, and lacks the strongly two-toned, cracking cap. Cyclocybe erebia is darker and more hygrophanous with a grooved margin and grows on soil and buried debris.

Kuehneromyces mutabilis shares clustered growth on hardwood and a ringed stipe, but is much smaller with a strongly hygrophanous two-zoned cap that dries in a pale disc, a scaly stipe below the ring and rusty rather than tobacco-brown spores. Pholiota species on the same stumps are typically yellow-toned and conspicuously scaly with rusty-brown spore prints. Galerina marginata is far smaller, with a smooth honey-brown hygrophanous cap, a thin fragile ring and rusty spores.

Common questions about Black Poplar Mushroom

Why does the cap develop a cracked, tiled surface?
The cuticle is relatively inelastic, so when the cap expands in warm dry weather the surface layer splits into a mosaic of small plates with paler flesh showing in the fissures. Specimens grown in constant humidity may stay entirely smooth, so the cracking is weather-dependent rather than universal.
What trees should I search?
Poplars of all kinds are the classic host, especially black poplar and cottonwood, followed by willow. It also fruits on elder, elm, ash, mulberry and fig. Look at trunk wounds, pruning cuts, stumps and exposed roots, including on living trees.
How do I confirm the spore colour?
Set a mature cap gills-down on white paper for a few hours under a cover. The deposit is a warm tobacco or cigar brown — clearly darker and duller than the bright rust of a *Pholiota* and quite distinct from the purple-black of *Hypholoma* or the pure white of *Armillaria*.
Is it a wood decayer or a tree parasite?
Both, depending on circumstances. It is primarily a white-rot saprotroph on dead hardwood, but it can enter living trees through bark wounds and decay heartwood from the inside, which is why clusters often appear on standing poplars that still carry a full canopy.
