Black Velvet Bolete Identification Guide

A practical route to naming Tylopilus alboater in oak woods: the sooty velvet cap, the white pores that grey with age, and the two-stage pink-then-black staining of the flesh.

First Impression and Setting

In a warm-temperate oak woodland in midsummer, after a run of thunderstorms, you will see what looks like a lump of dark charcoal pushed up through the leaf litter. It is round, matt, sooty and it does not reflect light at all, which is unusual enough among boletes to stop you. Brush the litter away and the picture resolves into a stocky, dark-capped bolete with a startlingly white spore surface underneath, and that white-on-black contrast is the whole first impression.

The setting is consistent: broadleaf forest with oak present, often on slopes and along old woodland roads, on the ground and never on wood. Fruiting bodies come singly or in small scattered groups rather than in troops, and they are often half-buried, so what you see at first is only the top of the cap.

Reading the Cap

The cap is five to fifteen centimetres across, convex at first and flattening slowly, with the margin remaining inrolled for a long time. Colour ranges from sooty black through blackish-brown to dark grey-brown, sometimes with a faint bluish or olive cast at the margin, and it pales somewhat in age or after prolonged rain.

Texture is the key. The surface is dry and finely velvety, like short-pile fabric, with no viscidity at all even in wet weather. In dry spells the velvet cracks into a fine areolate pattern, and paler flesh shows in the cracks, giving a mosaic effect against the dark surface. Run your thumb across it: the pile flattens and leaves a darker track, which recovers slowly.

The Pore Surface

Turn the cap over and the contrast does the work. Young fruiting bodies have a chalk-white to cream tube layer that is depressed around the top of the stipe. The pores are small and round, roughly two to three per millimetre, and the tubes beneath them are up to a centimetre or more deep.

With age the white surface takes on a pale pinkish, greyish-pink or dull flesh-toned cast, never a bright rose. That drift toward pink is a genus character worth registering, because it points you at Tylopilus rather than at the yellow-pored boletes.

Now bruise the pores with a fingernail. On this species the pressed area first goes pinkish or reddish-brown, then continues to darken over several minutes to grey-black. Watching that two-stage change is far more informative than a single glance.

Stipe, Base and Flesh

The stipe is stout, four to twelve centimetres tall and often as thick as a thumb or thicker, equal or slightly swollen in the middle and tapering at the base. It is concolorous with the cap or slightly paler, blackish-grey to dark brown, and it carries the same fine velvety or minutely roughened texture. Look closely for reticulation: this species is usually smooth or only obscurely and coarsely net-marked toward the apex, never carrying the sharp, deep, dark net that some relatives display.

The base is not bulbous and there is no volva or ring. White mycelial threads are often visible at the point where it enters the soil.

Slice the fruiting body vertically from cap centre to stipe base. The flesh is thick, firm and white. Watch the cut face for a full minute: it flushes pinkish to greyish-pink first, then darkens through slate grey to near-black, usually settling into a dirty charcoal tone in the cap flesh and a paler grey in the stipe. This sequence, white to pink to black, is the character the common name is built around and it is the single most useful confirmation in the field.

Taking a Spore Print

Cut the stipe off flush with the tubes, set the cap pore-side-down on white paper, cover with a bowl and leave it four to eight hours. The deposit is pinkish-brown, reddish-brown or vinaceous brown, distinctly warmer than the olive-brown of the majority of boletes. If your print comes out olive or yellow-brown, you have a different genus.

Give the print time. A thin deposit can look ambiguous, so leave a mature cap overnight if the first attempt is faint, and read the colour in daylight rather than under artificial light, which flatters brown tones toward pink.

Substrate, Season and Ecology

This is an ectomycorrhizal partner of broadleaf trees, above all oaks, and it also associates with beech and other hardwoods across its range. It fruits from soil in mixed and pure hardwood stands, favouring well-drained slopes and litter-covered ground, from early summer through to early autumn, with the strongest flushes in humid summer weather.

Because the partnership is with tree roots, the same ground produces year after year. Note the tree, not just the spot.

Separating It From Look-alikes on Morphology

Tylopilus felleus. Shares the pink-drifting pores but differs in almost everything else visible. Its cap is tan, buff or medium brown rather than sooty black, its stipe is pale and carries a coarse, dark, conspicuously raised network over the upper half, and its cut flesh either stays white or flushes only faintly pinkish. It never blackens.

Tylopilus griseocarneus. Genuinely close. It is greyer overall rather than truly black, and it carries a distinct raised reticulum over much of the stipe, whereas the Black Velvet Bolete is smooth to obscurely marked. Its flesh also stains, so use the stipe surface sculpture rather than the staining to separate them.

Porphyrellus species such as P. sordidus. Dark brown to blackish caps and dark stipes, but the pore surface starts brownish or vinaceous rather than clean white, and the flesh usually flushes blue or blue-green somewhere in the sequence before darkening. Clean white young pores plus a pink-then-black stain point away from Porphyrellus.

Sutorius eximius. Dark purple-grey to chocolate cap and a stipe covered in fine dark purplish scurf or dots on a paler ground, with pores that are dark purplish-grey from the start rather than white. Its flesh discolours only weakly.

Dark Xerocomus and Boletus species. These generally show yellow tube surfaces, olive-brown spore prints and blue rather than pink-black staining. A white young pore surface, a reddish-brown print and a two-stage pink-to-black stain excludes them.
