Blackening Brittlegill Identification Guide
A step-by-step field method for Russula nigricans, focused on the very thick, widely spaced gills and the slow red-then-black bruising sequence that separates it from the other blackening brittlegills.
First Impressions
Blackening Brittlegill announces itself long before you can see any detail, because a fruiting patch usually contains fruit bodies at every stage at once. Under beech or oak in late summer you find a hard whitish dome shouldering up through the litter, next to a full-grown dirty-ochre cap the size of a saucer, next to a coal-black wreck from six weeks ago that is still standing. That three-generation tableau is characteristic. The species is heavy, coarse and unelegant compared with the bright brittlegills, and it usually comes up in small scattered groups rather than singly.
Reading the Cap
Caps run 5-20 cm across, occasionally larger. A young cap is convex with a strongly inrolled margin and a dry, matt, whitish to dirty cream surface, very often plastered with soil and leaf fragments because it pushes up through the litter rather than emerging cleanly. With age it flattens and then becomes broadly funnel-shaped or depressed at the centre, and the colour marches steadily through grey-buff and dingy ochre-brown to sooty grey-brown and finally black. The cuticle is dry, sometimes finely felty, and peels only at the very margin, unlike the easily skinned caps of many smaller brittlegills.
The Gills: The Decisive Character
Turn the cap over. This is the feature to fix in your memory, because it is unusually distinctive for a brittlegill. The gills are strikingly thick, blunt-edged and widely spaced, more like the gills of a fleshy woodland agaric than the fine, closely packed blades of a typical Russula. They are adnate to slightly decurrent, unequal in length with numerous short gills between the full-length ones, and rather firm to the touch. Colour is whitish to pale cream at first, then grey, then blackish in the fully aged fruit body.
Run a fingernail across them and confirm the family character while you are there: brittlegill gills fracture and crumble rather than bending, and so does the stipe flesh, which snaps cleanly like a stick of chalk instead of tearing into fibres.
The Bruising Sequence
This is the second half of the identification and it needs patience. Cut the fruit body in half from cap to stem base with a knife, lay it on your hand and watch. The flesh is white and firm at first. Over roughly five to twenty minutes it flushes salmon-pink to dull red across the whole cut surface, and then, over a further half hour or more, that red darkens through grey to charcoal and finally near-black. Bruised gills, a scratched cap and a nicked stipe follow the same red-then-black route.
The important part is the pace and the intermediate red stage. If you look once and walk away you will only see the black end point, which is shared by several species. Take a photograph at the cut, and another after ten minutes, and you will have a record of exactly the transition that separates this species from its neighbours.
Stipe, Base and Flesh
The stipe is short, thick and solid, usually 3-8 cm tall and 2-4 cm across, more or less cylindrical or slightly tapering downwards, dry and whitish when young and increasingly greyed and blotched brown-black with age. There is no ring, no volva and no rooting extension; the base is simply blunt and set in the litter. The flesh is dense, white, and thick under the cap centre, and it is worth cutting through the stipe as well as the cap because the reddening reaction is often clearest in the solid stipe tissue.
Spore Print
Cut the stipe flush, set the cap gill-side down on black glass or dark card, cover to hold humidity and leave several hours. The deposit is white to very pale cream. Because the gills are so widely spaced, the print comes out as distinct radiating lines rather than an even wash, which is itself a small confirmation of the gill spacing you noted earlier. Read the print against a dark background and in daylight; the difference between white and pale cream matters in this genus.
Substrate, Season and Setting
The species is ectomycorrhizal and partners a wide range of trees, with beech and oak the most reliable hosts and conifers also used. Fruit bodies come from soil and litter, never from wood. The season runs from midsummer into late autumn, and it is one of the earlier brittlegills to appear in a good year.
One ecological quirk is genuinely useful for identification. The blackened, mummified old fruit bodies persist for months and are frequently colonised by the small parasitic Asterophora fungi, which appear as clusters of little pale, powdery-capped mushrooms growing directly out of the dead brittlegill. If you find those, the host beneath them is almost always this species or a close relative, and their presence should send you looking for fresh material nearby.
Separating the Look-Alikes
Everything in this group blackens, so the separation rests on gill spacing, gill thickness and the exact colour-change sequence.
Russula densifolia has notably crowded, thin gills, quite unlike the thick distant blades of Blackening Brittlegill, and its flesh reddens quickly before blackening.
Russula adusta has crowded gills too and a flesh reaction that goes brownish or greyish with little or no red phase, and its cap tends towards a smoother greyish-brown.
Russula acrifolia is smaller, with crowded gills and a cap margin that stays inrolled, and it reddens promptly.
Russula anthracina again has more crowded gills and a fast reaction to grey.
In short: thick, distant, unequal gills plus a slow, clearly two-stage red-to-black change means Blackening Brittlegill; crowded gills or a fast single-stage change means one of the others.
Outside the genus, Lactarius species can look similar in stature and also blacken in a few species, but they exude latex from cut gills, which brittlegills never do. Blackening waxcaps are unrelated: they are small, slim, brightly coloured before blackening, with soft waxy gills and a fibrous stipe that bends rather than snaps.
Field Sequence
Big robust pale-then-dark cap with dirt in the cuticle, very thick widely spaced brittle gills, chalk-snapping stipe, cut flesh that reddens then blackens over the following half hour, white to cream spore print, ectomycorrhizal with beech or oak in summer and autumn, plus mummified black remains persisting nearby.
