Blackening Waxcap Identification Guide

How to recognise Hygrocybe conica in old grassland by its sharply pointed scarlet or orange cap, waxy gills and the way every part turns coal-black where it is touched or ages.

The Setting and the First Impression

Blackening Waxcap belongs to short, unimproved grassland: old churchyards, mossy lawns that have never seen fertiliser, upland pasture, coastal dunes and grassy commons. In autumn these places produce scattered flame-coloured cones standing up out of the turf, and Blackening Waxcap is usually the first waxcap a beginner learns because of one behaviour no other grassland fungus repeats so emphatically. Look across the same patch and you will find bright specimens, half-blackened specimens and fully carbonised black spikes side by side. That gradient across a single colony is the identification in a nutshell.

If you are unsure at a distance, do the cheapest test available: press a fingertip firmly against a cap edge, note where you touched it, and check again in twenty minutes. A grey-black thumbprint developing on scarlet is worth more than any amount of colour matching.

Reading the Cap

The cap is 2-6 cm across and sharply conical, often acutely pointed, with a distinct apex that persists even as the margin expands and splits. Mature caps flatten somewhat and the margin lifts, tears radially and becomes wavy, but the pointed centre remains. The surface is slightly greasy or viscid when moist, drying to a silky sheen, and it is finely fibrillose in radiating lines that catch the light.

Fresh colour is scarlet, vermilion, orange or clear yellow depending on the specimen and the population, sometimes with an orange centre grading to yellow at the rim. From the moment it matures, blackening begins, typically at the margin and on any bruised point, then spreading inward until the whole cap is slate to coal-black. Blackened caps hold their shape and can persist in the turf for weeks, so a patch of black cones in December may be the remains of an October flush.

The Gills

Gills are the classic waxcap type: thickish, rather widely spaced, soft and slightly waxy or greasy to the touch, and easily separated from the cap flesh. Attachment is free to narrowly adnexed, so most specimens show a small gap between the gill ends and the top of the stem. Colour starts whitish, pale yellow or faintly orange, and as with everything else it goes grey and then black with age or handling. Rub a gill face gently between fingers and note that it feels soft and slightly slippery rather than dry and papery; that waxy feel is the family signature.

Stipe and Base

The stipe is 4-10 cm tall and slender, 4-10 mm thick, usually longer than the cap is wide, which gives the species its characteristic top-heavy, spiky silhouette. It is fibrous, often twisted, longitudinally grooved or striate, and hollow in mature material. Colour is yellow to orange, commonly paler than the cap, sometimes whitish right at the base. It blackens like everything else, frequently from the base upwards, so a common intermediate look is a yellow stem with a black foot.

There is no ring and no volva. The stipe base is simply inserted into the turf, often with a little white mycelial felt binding soil and moss. Because the fibres run lengthwise, the stipe tends to split and bend rather than snapping cleanly.

Flesh and Colour Change

Slice a fruit body lengthwise. The flesh is thin, fragile, and coloured like the surface but paler, watery orange to yellowish, whitish in the stipe interior. Watch the cut face: it greys and then blackens within minutes to an hour. There is no latex. The whole species can be summarised as a fungus that converts itself to charcoal-black in stages, from the outside in and from the extremities toward the centre.

Spore Print

Sever the stipe close to the gills, lay the cap on black card or dark glass, cover it and leave three or more hours. The print is white. This is worth doing at least once, because a white print on a brightly coloured grassland mushroom rules out several unrelated look-alikes, notably the pink-printing Entoloma species and the brown-printing small fungi of the same turf. Waxcap spores are smooth and ellipsoid.

Substrate, Season and Habitat Quality

This is a grassland species, growing from soil in short, mossy, nutrient-poor swards. It does not grow on wood and it is not associated with trees. Fruiting runs from late summer through to the first hard frosts, with the peak usually in October and November, and it is often the earliest and the most widespread waxcap in a given site.

Ecologically it is a useful indicator. Waxcaps as a group persist in grassland that has escaped ploughing and heavy fertiliser input, so a site producing Blackening Waxcap alongside several other waxcap species, plus earthtongues, pinkgills and club fungi, is likely to be old undisturbed turf. Old churchyards and mown lawn edges are prime hunting ground for exactly that reason.

Separating the Look-Alikes

Hygrocybe acutoconica, the persistent waxcap, is the closest visual match: pointed conical cap, yellow to orange, slender striate stipe, same habitat, same season. It does not blacken. Bruise it, leave it, come back, and it stays bright, which is a complete separation.

Hygrocybe conicoides is a dune specialist. It shares the blackening habit but its gills are distinctly reddish or orange rather than pale yellow, and the cap is often more blunt.

Hygrocybe nigrescens is treated by many authors as part of a variable complex with this species. Where it is separated, it is larger and stouter with a broader, less acutely pointed cap.

Hygrocybe coccinea and Hygrocybe punicea are red waxcaps of the same turf but have rounded or bluntly convex caps, thicker stature and no blackening reaction.

Hygrocybe cantharellus is small, with a flat or depressed orange cap and strongly decurrent gills, the opposite of the free gills here.

Grassland Entoloma species can be dark and conical, but they are grey-brown rather than flame-coloured, do not blacken on handling, and drop a pink spore print.

A Compact Field Routine

Look in old short turf in autumn; find a sharply conical, greasy, flame-coloured cap; check for free to narrowly adnexed, soft waxy, widely spaced pale gills; confirm a fibrous, striate, often twisted hollow stipe with no ring; bruise a cap edge and wait for the blackening; take a white spore print. The bruise test alone excludes most of the field, and the rest of the sequence closes it out.

Common questions

How quickly does the blackening appear?
Bruised areas typically grey within a few minutes and go properly black over roughly twenty minutes to an hour, while whole fruit bodies blacken progressively over days as they mature. Pressing a fingertip on the cap and rechecking after twenty minutes is the fastest confirmation available in the field.
How do I separate it from the persistent waxcap, Hygrocybe acutoconica?
By the bruising reaction alone. The two share a pointed conical cap, yellow to orange colours, a striate stipe and the same grassland habitat, but Hygrocybe acutoconica keeps its bright colour when handled and as it ages, while Blackening Waxcap turns grey and then coal-black.
