Lactarius sanguifluus
Also called blood milkcap, red pine milkcap
A pine-associated milkcap of southern limestone woodland whose flesh releases dark blood-red latex the instant it is cut, with no orange phase at all.
Overview
Lactarius sanguifluus is the deepest-coloured member of section Deliciosi, the orange- and red-latex milkcaps. Where its relatives bleed carrot-orange latex that only later oxidises toward red, this species produces latex that is already a dark blood or wine-red at the moment of cutting. That immediacy is the single most reliable character in the group.
The cap tends toward the muted end of the section's palette: greyish pink, vinaceous buff or dull salmon rather than bright orange, with weak or irregular concentric zoning and, in older specimens, sizeable green stains. The stipe often carries darker vinaceous pits and can be flushed with the same wine tones as the latex.
It is a fungus of warm, calcareous pine woodland, and in southern Europe it is a familiar autumn species of limestone hillsides and Aleppo or black pine stands, appearing later in the season than most of its relatives and continuing into early winter in mild regions.
How to identify it
Cap
The cap is 5–12 cm across, convex with a strongly inrolled margin when young, then flattening and finally depressed to funnel-shaped. Colour is greyish pink to vinaceous buff, dull salmon or pale brick, sometimes with an olive or greenish cast, and zoning is weak and irregular where present. The surface is smooth, greasy when damp, and develops green blotches with age and handling.
Gills
Gills are adnate to shortly decurrent, crowded, narrow, and pinkish ochre to vinaceous, often with a purplish-red tone where the latex has dried. They stain dark red then greenish where damaged and fork here and there near the stipe.
Stipe
The stipe is 3–7 cm tall and 1.5–2.5 cm thick, often short and stout, tapering toward the base. It is pale pinkish-buff, frequently flushed vinaceous, and usually marked with shallow darker pits. It hollows with age and greens where bruised. There is no ring and no volva.
Flesh & spore print
The flesh is pale, tinged pink or vinaceous, and slowly greens on exposure. Cut tissue immediately releases dark blood-red to purplish-red latex, which dries to a still darker stain. The spore print is pale cream to buff, with spores ornamented by warts and connecting ridges.
Where and when it grows
This is a milkcap of pine woodland on calcareous ground. It grows with Aleppo pine, black pine, Scots pine and other two-needled pines, typically on limestone or otherwise base-rich soils, in open, warm, well-drained sites including maquis-edge woodland and hillside plantations.
Its distribution centres on southern and central Europe and the Mediterranean basin, with records extending north into the warmer parts of temperate Europe and eastward through Asia Minor. Fruiting comes late in the year, from mid-autumn into early winter in mild coastal climates, usually following the first substantial autumn rains.
Ecological role
Lactarius sanguifluus is ectomycorrhizal with pines. The fungus forms a sheath of hyphae over fine pine rootlets, with a Hartig net between the outer root cells, and links the tree to an absorptive network that extends metres through the stony calcareous soils typical of its habitat. In such thin, dry substrates the water and phosphorus supplied by the fungal partner are especially important to the host.
The red latex functions as a chemical and physical defence, flooding wounds and deterring invertebrate grazers, and its pigments oxidise on air contact to give the green staining seen in older fruiting bodies. Fruiting bodies decay slowly in dry Mediterranean autumns and support a range of fungus-feeding insects that disperse spores locally.
Similar species
Lactarius deliciosus and Lactarius deterrimus both begin with carrot-orange latex; only after minutes does that latex darken in L. deterrimus, and it barely reddens at all in L. deliciosus. Neither ever bleeds dark red on the first cut. L. deliciosus also has a brighter, more sharply zoned orange cap and grows with pine on a wider range of soils, while L. deterrimus is confined to spruce.
Lactarius semisanguifluus is the closest match: it too reddens fast, but its latex starts orange and turns wine-red over a couple of minutes rather than emerging red, and its cap is a brighter orange with heavier green staining. Lactarius vinosus has a darker vinaceous-purple cap and stipe and grows with pine on acid soils, with latex that is red but usually a lighter, more purple-toned red.
