Blue Spot Knight Identification Guide

A step-by-step read of Tricholoma columbetta, the silky white knight of beech and birch woods, including the blue-green staining at the stem base that names it.

The setting and the first impression

The Blue Spot Knight is a woodland fungus of late summer and autumn, and you will usually meet it on acidic soils under beech, birch or oak, often on a slope, often where the litter is thin and mossy. It fruits on the ground, scattered or in small troops, sometimes in loose arcs, and it pushes up through litter so cleanly that the caps often carry a scatter of leaf fragments glued to the top. The first impression is of a solidly built, pure white mushroom of medium size, cap 5-10 cm across, with a satiny sheen that catches the light differently as you move your head. It looks substantial rather than delicate: a thick white stem, a firm cap and a general air of being carved rather than grown. That silky white surface is the character that pulls it out of the litter, and the blue-green marks that give the species its name are usually hiding at the very base of the stem, below the leaf line.

Reading the cap

Start with shape. Young caps are convex with a strongly inrolled margin; as they expand they flatten out, often becoming slightly irregular or wavy at the edge, and the margin frequently splits or lobes in dry weather. The surface is white to ivory, occasionally with a faint cream or pale straw tint at the very centre in age, and it is silky-fibrillose rather than smooth: under a lens you can see fine appressed radial fibres running from the centre outwards, which is what produces the satin sheen. The cap is dry to slightly greasy when wet, never truly slimy, and it is not scaly. On older specimens you may find scattered pinkish, greenish or bluish spots or smudges on the cap surface, especially near the margin or where the cap has been in contact with the ground. Those marks are irregular and patchy, not zoned, and finding even one is a helpful confirmation.

Reading the gills

Turn the cap over and look at how the gills meet the stem, because this is the character that anchors the genus. In Tricholoma the gills are sinuate: they run towards the stem, then curve upwards in a distinct notch just before reaching it, so the attachment looks scooped out rather than straight or decurrent. In the Blue Spot Knight the gills are crowded, moderately broad, white to very pale cream, and they discolour slightly with age, sometimes developing rusty or pinkish spotting where they have been damaged. The gill edges are even to very slightly ragged. There is no ring on the stem and no veil covering the gills at any stage, so a young specimen shows its gills already exposed, and there is never a cobwebby cortina.

Stem, base and flesh

The stem is the reason to dig rather than pick. It is 5-12 cm long and 1-2 cm thick, more or less cylindrical or tapering slightly downwards, firm, solid, white, and finely fibrillose along its length with the same satin quality as the cap. Ease the whole thing out of the soil with a knife or your fingers so that the base comes up intact. On many collections the lower stem and the base carry blue-green, greenish or occasionally pinkish stains, sometimes as small discrete spots and sometimes as a diffuse wash, and this is the feature the common name records. The base itself is rounded or slightly swollen but has no bag-like sac, no free rim of tissue and no ring zone. The flesh throughout is white, firm and thick, and it stays white when cut, with at most a very faint pinkish or greenish tinge developing slowly at the stem base. The fungus has a mild, faintly farinaceous smell, which is worth noting as a character but is never decisive on its own.

Taking a spore print

Because so many white woodland agarics look alike, the spore print is essential rather than optional. Cut the stem flush with the gills, set the cap gills-down on dark and light paper simultaneously so you can judge a pale deposit against both, cover it, and leave it four to eight hours. The result is white, sometimes with the very faintest cream cast in a thick deposit. Under a microscope the spores are small, smooth, hyaline, broadly ellipsoid, roughly 5-7 by 4-5 micrometres, and they do not turn blue-black in iodine solutions. A white print, smooth non-amyloid spores, sinuate gills, no ring and no volva is the combination that defines the genus.

Substrate, season and ecology

Tricholoma columbetta is mycorrhizal, forming root partnerships with broadleaved trees, so it grows on soil close to living hosts and never on wood. Beech and birch are the classic associates, with oak and hornbeam also recorded, and it shows a strong preference for acidic, well-drained, often sandy or gravelly soils. It fruits from late summer through autumn, peaking in the middle of the season after steady rain, and it can persist into the first cold weather. Because it depends on a living partner, it appears in the same spots year after year, and a known site is worth revisiting. It is widespread but never abundant across temperate Europe and adjacent regions.

Separating it from look-alikes on morphology alone

White woodland agarics are the hardest group to sort by eye, so run the sequence in order: check for a ring, check for a sac at the base, check the gill attachment, then take a print.

Amanita species are the first thing to eliminate on any all-white woodland agaric. Amanitas have free gills that do not touch the stem, usually a ring, and almost always a bulb or a membranous sac at the base. Dig the base out completely; the Blue Spot Knight has no sac, no free rim, and its gills are notched onto the stem rather than free.

Tricholoma album is the same genus and the same colour but is generally smaller and more slender, has a duller, less silky cap that yellows in age, never shows blue-green base stains, and carries a strong, sharp, disagreeable smell.

Tricholoma stiparophyllum is similarly white but has a more strongly striate or ridged gill edge, a stouter stature and a heavier odour.

Tricholoma sulphurescens is superficially close but stains a clear sulphur-yellow where handled or bruised, rather than blue-green.

Clitopilus prunulus is a white woodland species with a similar matte cap, but its gills are decurrent, running down the stem instead of notching, and its spore print is pink.

Hygrophorus penarius and other white woodhogs have thick, waxy, widely spaced gills that feel greasy between the fingers and are usually subdecurrent, quite unlike the crowded notched gills here.

Leucoagaricus species have free gills and a distinct movable ring, both absent here.

Field checklist

Common questions

Where do the blue spots actually appear?
Most often on the lower part of the stem and at the base, where they show as small blue-green or greenish smudges and spots, sometimes as a diffuse wash. They can also appear as irregular pinkish, greenish or bluish blotches on the cap, especially near the margin. Because the base marks sit below the litter line, you need to lift the whole fruit body out to see them.
Which trees is it found with?
It is mycorrhizal with broadleaved trees, principally beech and birch, and also recorded with oak and hornbeam. It fruits on soil near living hosts, favouring acidic, well-drained, often sandy or gravelly ground, and it never grows on wood. Sites tend to be productive in the same place year after year because the partnership is with a living root system.
How do I make sure a white woodland mushroom is a knight and not an Amanita?
Dig the entire base out of the soil rather than snapping the stem. Amanita species typically have a membranous sac or a rimmed bulb at the base and a ring on the stem, and their gills are free of the stem. Tricholoma columbetta has a plain rounded base with no sac, no ring at all, and gills that meet the stem with a distinct upward notch.
What does the spore print look like?
White, occasionally with the faintest cream cast in a thick deposit. Print onto both dark and light paper so a pale deposit is easy to judge. A white print rules out Clitopilus prunulus, which is pink-spored and has decurrent gills, and it confirms the fungus sits with the white-spored knights rather than the pinkgills.
