Bluing Bolete Identification Guide
The Gyroporus cyanescens workflow: a straw-coloured felty bolete on sandy ground whose brittle, chambered stipe and instant indigo bruising make the identification almost immediate.
First Impression and Setting
Sandy ground, thin soil, an oak-and-pine edge or a heathy woodland track, late summer into autumn. What you see is a pale mushroom, straw to buff, sitting a little proud of the sparse litter, with a cap that looks dry and slightly shaggy rather than smooth. In a genus full of brown and red boletes, the washed-out oatmeal colour is the first thing that registers.
The second thing registers about three seconds later, once you have touched it. Almost every part of this fungus turns a startling deep blue, close to indigo or ink, within seconds of pressure. Nothing else at that colour and in that habitat blues so instantly and so intensely, and the reaction is fast enough that a fingerprint left on a cap while you are still crouching will be dark blue by the time you stand up.
Habitat is a genuine part of the identification. Look on light, sandy, acid soils, on banks and eroded path edges, in oak, beech, birch and pine woodland and at woodland margins. Fruiting bodies are usually scattered or in small groups rather than in dense troops.
Reading the Cap
The cap is four to twelve centimetres across, convex when young and flattening or becoming shallowly uneven with age. The margin is inrolled at first and often stays slightly incurved, sometimes overhanging the tubes a little.
Surface texture is a strong character. It is dry, matt and finely felty to fibrillose-scurfy, often with tiny raised tufts or a rough, almost velvety-shaggy feel, and it is never viscid, even in rain. Colour runs from pale straw and buff through dull ochre and pale tan to greyish-cream. Press the surface: the pressed area darkens to blue-green within seconds and settles into a strong blue.
The Pore Surface
Underneath, the tube layer is white to pale cream in youth, ageing pale yellow to straw-yellow. Pores are small and round, roughly two to three per millimetre, and the tube layer is shallow, generally under a centimetre deep, and is depressed around the top of the stipe or nearly free of it.
Bruise the pores with a fingernail and the line goes blue almost at once, deepening to indigo. On a fresh, well-hydrated specimen the reaction is close to instantaneous. In very dry weather or on old material it can be slower and patchier, so test more than one spot and give it a full minute before judging.
Stipe, Base and Flesh
The stipe is the second key. It is four to ten centimetres tall, roughly equal or slightly swollen toward the base, concolorous with the cap or slightly paler, dry and often with the same fine felty texture. There is no ring, no glandular dotting and no raised network.
Cut it lengthwise. The stipe interior is not solid: it is stuffed with cottony tissue when very young and then develops irregular hollow chambers, eventually becoming largely hollow with thin partitions. That chambered-to-hollow structure is a genus character and it is the single best confirmation after the bluing.
The flesh throughout is white and notably brittle. Snap the stipe rather than slicing it and it breaks cleanly, like a piece of chalk or a Russula stem, instead of tearing into fibres the way most bolete stipes do. Watch the fracture face: it flushes blue in seconds, then over several minutes may fade toward a duller blue-grey.
Taking a Spore Print
Remove the stipe cleanly at the tubes, set the cap pore-side-down on white paper, cover it with a bowl to keep humidity up, and leave it six to twelve hours. Expect a pale yellow, straw or buff-yellow deposit. That pale, distinctly yellowish print is important, because the great majority of boletes drop an olive-brown to dark brown print, and a pale yellow one immediately shortlists a handful of genera.
Read the deposit in daylight against the white paper, and if it is faint, slide the paper against a dark background to make the film visible.
Substrate, Season and Ecology
Gyroporus cyanescens is ectomycorrhizal, forming root partnerships with both broadleaf and coniferous trees, particularly oak, beech, birch and pine. It has a strong preference for sandy, well-drained, nutrient-poor acid soils, which is why path cuttings, sandy banks, heath edges and open woodland on light ground are the productive places to look.
The season is summer to autumn, peaking after warm rain. Since the association is with tree roots, the same sandy bank tends to produce for years.
Separating It From Look-alikes on Morphology
Gyroporus castaneus. Same genus, same brittle flesh, same chambered to hollow stipe, same pale yellow spore print. It is separated at a glance by colour, being warm chestnut to reddish-brown on the cap and stipe rather than straw-buff, and above all by the absence of bluing. Its white flesh stays white when cut.
Gyroporus purpurinus. Also brittle and hollow-stemmed, but with a distinctly purple to wine-red cap and stipe, smaller stature, and little or no blue reaction.
Cyanoboletus pulverulentus. Blues dramatically and instantly, which causes real confusion, but the rest of the anatomy is different. Its cap is olive-brown to dark brown, its pores are yellow from early on, its stipe is solid and fibrous rather than chambered, its flesh is yellow rather than white, the bluing goes almost blue-black, and the spore print is olive-brown.
Suillus species. Share a pale to yellowish palette but have viscid or glutinous caps in wet weather, frequently a ring or glandular dots on the stipe, larger and often angular or radially arranged pores, solid stipes and olive-brown to cinnamon spore prints. Bluing, when present at all, is weak.
Leccinum species. Have tall stipes covered in conspicuous dark scabers, fibrous non-chambered flesh, and darkening to grey or black rather than a clean instant indigo.
Boletus and Xerocomus relatives generally. Nearly all have fibrous, solid stipes and olive-brown prints. If you snap a stipe and it fractures brittly and reveals hollow chambers, you have left that group behind.
