A flat, radially wrinkled bracket in reddish and tan bands whose pale maze-like underside flushes distinctly pink-red wherever it is touched.
Overview
The Blushing Bracket earns its name from an unusually clear reaction: run a fingernail across the fresh underside and the pale pore surface reddens along the mark within moments, deepening to a dull reddish brown. Very few temperate brackets do this so obviously, and combined with the elongated maze-like pores and the reddish-brown zoned upper surface it makes for a straightforward identification.
Daedaleopsis is a small genus close to Trametes, sharing the tough, white-rot, stalkless bracket habit but distinguished by the maze-like to gill-like hymenophore. In this species the tubes are stretched radially and repeatedly interconnected, so the underside reads as a shallow labyrinth near the base grading toward elongated slots at the margin; some fruit bodies push this further and become almost gilled.
It is strongly tied to willow across much of its range and is one of the standard finds along riverbanks, wet woodland margins and carr.
How to identify it
Cap
Brackets are 5-15 cm wide and 1-3 cm thick, flattened, semicircular to fan- or kidney-shaped, broadly attached and stalkless, often several in a tier along a branch. The upper surface is smooth to slightly rough, distinctly wrinkled in a radial pattern, and marked with concentric zones in tan, ochre, reddish brown, purplish brown and grey-brown; young specimens are paler and warmer, older ones darker and greyer. The margin is thin and sharp.
Pores
The underside is whitish, cream or pale grey-buff, with tubes elongated radially into slots roughly 1-2 per millimetre and repeatedly branching and joining into a shallow maze; in some collections the walls become so extended that the surface is nearly gill-like. Its defining behaviour is the blush: scratched, pressed or rubbed areas turn pink to reddish and then dull reddish brown.
Flesh & spore print
The context is white to pale tan, tough, corky and 1-2 cm thick at the base, with a distinct duplex structure in some material. The bracket dries hard and remains recognisable for a second season. The spore print is white, from smooth cylindrical spores.
Where and when it grows
It fruits on dead and dying hardwood, with willow by far the most typical host, followed by birch, alder, hazel, hawthorn, blackthorn and other broadleaves. It favours standing dead stems and attached branches in damp settings — riverbanks, wet woodland, carr, pond edges and scrub — and frequently colonises limbs that are still part of a living tree but have died back.
The species is widespread across Europe, temperate Asia and North America. Fresh brackets develop from summer into late autumn, but the tough fruit bodies persist through winter, darkening and greying as they weather while retaining their maze-like underside.
Ecological role
The Blushing Bracket is a white-rot fungus, degrading lignin along with cellulose so that colonised branches become pale, light and fibrous. It behaves largely as a saprotroph on dead wood but frequently establishes in dying and recently dead branches on living trees, acting as an agent of natural self-pruning in willow and birch scrub.
In wet woodland it is one of the main recyclers of small-diameter deadwood, converting a dense tangle of dead willow stems into soft material that collapses into the litter. Its persistent brackets are a winter shelter for invertebrates, and the softened branch wood it produces is readily worked by beetle larvae and later-stage fungi.
Similar species
Daedaleopsis tricolor is a closely related form with a darker, redder to purplish-brown upper surface and a hymenophore developed into true radiating gill plates rather than a maze; intermediate collections occur and the two are sometimes treated as varieties. Daedalea quercina is far thicker and more corky, dull greyish buff, with a deep thick-walled labyrinth, and grows on oak rather than willow.
Trametes gibbosa also has elongated pores but is thick, chalky white with a basal hump, grows chiefly on beech stumps, and shows no reddening when handled. Lenzites betulinus has clean whitish radiating gill plates, a hairy zoned upper surface, and again no blush. The reddening underside is the single most useful separator from all of these.
