Blushing Morel Identification Guide

A practical read of Morchella rufobrunnea, the landscape morel of woodchip and disturbed ground, whose pale pitted head bruises pinkish-orange to rusty brown.

The setting and the first impression

The Blushing Morel is a fungus of made ground rather than wild forest, and that is the first thing to register. The classic setting is a landscaped bed with a fresh layer of hardwood chips: a campus planting, a shopping-centre verge, a municipal park border, a garden path edged with bark mulch, a disturbed slope where soil has recently been moved. It also appears along stream terraces and on burned-over or bulldozed ground in mild-winter regions. Standing over a bed, what you see is a pale, upright, honeycombed head on a white stalk, 5-15 cm tall overall, standing out of the chips singly or in loose scattered groups, sometimes in impressive numbers when the mulch is a year or two old. The first impression is of something hollow, dry, brain-of-a-honeycomb textured, and improbably pale compared with the darker morels of woodland.

Reading the head

Take the whole fruit body in your hand and look at the fertile head. It is conical to egg-shaped or narrowly oval, usually 3-8 cm tall, and its surface is divided into deep pits separated by raised ridges, exactly like a rough honeycomb. In Morchella rufobrunnea the pits are elongated and tend to be arranged in more or less vertical rows, with cross-ridges linking them so the overall pattern reads as a slightly irregular ladder rather than a random maze. Colour is the key. Young heads are pale: whitish, grey-buff, olive-grey or pale tan, with ridges that are the same tone as the pits or only slightly darker. As the fruit body matures, and particularly wherever it has been handled, bruised or damaged, it flushes pinkish-orange and then rusty reddish-brown, and old specimens can be extensively rust-coloured. That progressive blushing is the character the common name records and the most reliable single feature in the field.

The attachment, and cutting the fruit body in half

Now do the test that sorts morels from their imitators. Slice the whole fruit body vertically from tip to base with a sharp knife and look at the section. In a true morel the interior is one continuous hollow chamber running from the top of the head right through the stalk, with no cottony packing and no separate chambers, and the base of the head is fused to the stalk so that the two form a single unbroken wall. In Morchella rufobrunnea the head is attached at or very near its base, with at most a very shallow groove where head meets stalk, so there is no free hanging skirt. Take a moment to check that the wall is thin and even in thickness and that the hollow is genuinely empty. This one cut eliminates the entire set of look-alikes described below.

Stem and base

The stalk is white to pale cream, 3-8 cm long and 1-3 cm thick, roughly cylindrical but often widening downwards, and in well-developed specimens the base becomes swollen, wrinkled and furrowed with deep longitudinal folds. Under a lens the stalk surface is granular and finely pubescent, covered with a fine bran-like scurf, rather than smooth. It is hollow throughout. Like the head, the stalk stains pinkish-orange to rusty brown where handled, so a specimen carried in a bag for an hour is often visibly more coloured than it was when picked. The base sits directly in chips or loose soil and usually pulls up with a mat of pale mycelium and adhering woody fragments; there is no rooting cord and no sac.

Spores and how to take a print

Morels are cup fungi relatives rather than gilled mushrooms, so spores are shot from asci lining the pits rather than dropped from gills. You can still make a deposit: lay a mature fruit body on its side on white or dark paper, cover it to reduce air movement, and leave it several hours. The result is a faint whitish to pale cream or pale yellowish dusting on the paper, often thrown out in a fine arc rather than settling straight down. Under a microscope the spores are large and unmistakable: smooth, thin-walled, ellipsoid, roughly 20-28 by 12-19 micrometres, without oil droplets, sitting eight to an ascus. Anything with dark brown spores, or with markedly smaller spores, is not a morel.

Substrate, season and ecology

Morchella rufobrunnea is one of the landscape morels, a group that fruits on disturbed, human-modified ground rather than in undisturbed forest. Hardwood woodchip and bark mulch are the classic substrate, especially beds laid down within the previous one to three years, and it also comes up on disturbed soil, in gardens, along paths and on ground recently cleared or graded. It is common in mild-winter, Mediterranean-type climates and along mild coasts, and it has been recorded widely from western North America, Mexico, Israel and other regions with similar conditions, sometimes travelling with landscaping material. It behaves as a decomposer of woody debris and is not tied to a particular living tree, which is why beds can be productive and then stop as the chips break down. Fruiting is tied to warm rain: in mild-winter regions the main season is late winter into spring, but autumn flushes occur where irrigation and mild weather coincide, and this species is notably not dependent on recent fire.

Separating it from look-alikes on morphology alone

Morchella importuna, the other common woodchip morel, shares the habitat and the ladder-like pit arrangement. Separate them on colour and staining: M. importuna has dark grey to blackish ridges from an early stage and does not develop the pinkish-orange to rusty bruising, whereas M. rufobrunnea starts pale and blushes.

Morchella americana and other yellow morels have irregularly arranged, rounded pits rather than vertical ladders, ridges that pale to yellow-ochre in age, and a strong association with natural woodland, especially elm, ash and old orchards, rather than fresh mulch.

Black morels of the elata group have ridges that darken to grey-black and become sharply raised, pits arranged vertically, and often a distinct groove where the head joins the stalk.

Verpa bohemica and Verpa conica are the imitators that the vertical cut catches immediately: their head hangs free like a thimble on the stalk, attached only at the very top, and the stalk interior is stuffed with cottony pith rather than being cleanly hollow. Verpa surfaces are also wrinkled and folded rather than truly pitted.

Gyromitra species have a lobed, wrinkled, brain-like or saddle-shaped head with no honeycomb pits at all, and a stalk that is chambered inside with convoluted internal walls rather than a single hollow.

Helvella species are saddle-shaped or cup-like, usually grey to black or white, with smooth to slightly wrinkled surfaces and often ribbed, fluted stalks.
