An oddly shaped cream to pinkish-buff polypore forming rosettes or lopsided funnels on the ground above buried roots, staining reddish brown where handled and often weeping red droplets.

Overview

The Blushing Rosette (Abortiporus biennis) is one of the most variable and confusing polypores in temperate woodland, so much so that its own genus name refers to the frequently malformed, aborted-looking fruit bodies it produces. Some collections are neat funnels with a short stalk, some are ruffled rosettes of fused lobes, and some are shapeless white crusty masses with barely any pore surface at all.

What unites all these forms is the pinkish-red staining. Handle the pore surface or cut the flesh and it slowly discolours reddish brown, and young growing specimens often bead with wine-red droplets along the margin, which is where the English name comes from.

Because it typically emerges from soil rather than from obvious wood, many people first assume it is a ground-dwelling mushroom. In fact it is always attached to buried roots or fragments of hardwood below the surface, and digging carefully at the base of a fruit body usually reveals a tapering, root-like extension leading down to the substrate.

How to identify it

Fruiting body

Annual and extremely variable, 4-15 cm across. The commonest form is a lopsided funnel or shallow vase on a short, tapering, root-like stalk; the next commonest is a rosette of overlapping fused lobes; the third is an irregular, largely resupinate white crust with poorly developed pores. Colour ranges from white and cream when young through pale pinkish buff to ochre and reddish brown with age or handling. The surface is finely velvety to felty, sometimes faintly zoned.

Pores

The pore surface is white to cream, running down the stalk where one is present. Pores are angular, irregular, unequal in size and often partly maze-like or torn, about 1-3 per millimetre, and they stain reddish brown to dull rust where bruised. On abortive specimens the pore layer may be reduced to scattered pits or absent altogether.

Flesh and spore print

The flesh is soft, fibrous and two-layered in a good specimen, whitish to pale pink, and it discolours pinkish red to reddish brown when cut and exposed. Young actively growing margins frequently exude reddish to wine-coloured droplets. The spore print is white.

Where and when it grows

The Blushing Rosette fruits from soil, leaf litter, wood chip mulch, lawns, verges and the compacted edges of woodland paths, always in connection with buried hardwood roots, stumps or wood fragments. Oak, beech and other broadleaves are typical hosts, and it is also common in landscaped and urban settings where old root systems remain in the ground after tree removal.

It has a broad distribution across Europe, North America and temperate Asia. Fruiting runs from midsummer through late autumn, with individual fruit bodies developing slowly and persisting for weeks, gradually darkening and hardening as they age.

Ecological role

Abortiporus biennis is a white-rot saprotroph of buried hardwood, particularly root systems and stumps. It degrades lignin and cellulose in the below-ground portions of dead trees, an ecological compartment that is easy to overlook because the decay is invisible until a fruit body pushes up through the turf.

Its habit of colonising the residual roots of felled trees makes it a common fungus in gardens, parks and recently cleared ground. In breaking down heavy root wood it recycles nutrients that would otherwise remain locked below ground for decades, and it is part of the succession that eventually turns a stump and its root plate into soil organic matter.

Similar species

The Giant Polypore (Meripilus giganteus) also grows at the base of hardwoods in large rosettes, but it is much bigger, forms broad fan-shaped lobes rather than a single funnel, and its pore surface and flesh blacken rather than blush red when bruised. Bondarzewia species similarly form large ground-level rosettes but have coarse, angular, decurrent pores and much firmer flesh, and they do not stain reddish.

Polyporus species such as Polyporus varius have a distinct, often blackened stalk and a smooth tough cap with fine white pores that do not discolour red. Tiger's Eye (Coltricia perennis) is a stalked terrestrial polypore too, but it is thin, leathery, sharply zoned in rusty brown and has a brown pore surface with a brown spore print. Abortive crust-like forms of the Blushing Rosette can suggest a resupinate Antrodia, but the reddish staining and the red droplets on the growing edge settle the matter.

Common questions about Blushing Rosette

Why does it seem to grow on the ground rather than on wood?
It is always attached to buried hardwood, usually old roots or the remains of a stump. The connection is via a tapering root-like base, so careful excavation beneath a fruit body will show the wood it is feeding on.
What causes the red droplets on the margin?
Actively growing fruit bodies exude wine-red to reddish-brown liquid droplets along the growing edge in humid conditions. Together with the reddish bruising of the pore surface, this is the origin of the name Blushing Rosette.
Why do some specimens have almost no pores?
