A brown-scaled woodland Agaricus of conifer litter whose white flesh blushes vivid red within moments of being cut.
Overview
Blushing Wood Mushroom (Agaricus silvaticus, often spelled sylvaticus) is the best-known of the red-staining woodland Agaricus species. Its defining trick is immediate: slice the stipe or cap flesh and the white tissue flushes a clear salmon-red or blood-red within seconds, deepening over a minute or two before slowly browning. Few other characters in the genus are as instantly readable.
It belongs to the section of Agaricus — sometimes called the Sanguinolenti — grouped by exactly this reddening reaction, in contrast to the yellow-staining, aniseed-scented species on one hand and the non-staining meadow species on the other. All share the family's core features: free gills that pass from pale through pink to chocolate brown, a membranous ring, and a dark brown spore print.
The species is a characteristic autumn fungus of conifer plantations and spruce woods across the temperate Northern Hemisphere, where its brown-scaled caps blend closely with fallen needles until the pale gills and stipe give them away.
How to identify it
Cap
The cap is 5–12 cm across, ovate to conical-convex when young, expanding to broadly convex or flat with age. The pale whitish to buff ground is covered with numerous flattened, fibrillose, reddish-brown to chestnut scales, usually arranged in radiating rows and densest over the centre, with the paler ground showing between them toward the margin. The overall impression at a distance is of a mid-brown cap.
Gills
The gills are free from the stipe, crowded and narrow. They are pale greyish or whitish-pink in the button stage, become clearly pink, and finally darken to deep chocolate brown. On very young specimens the gills are hidden behind the intact white veil.
Stipe
The stipe is 6–12 cm long and 1–1.5 cm thick, slender, whitish, hollow at maturity, and slightly enlarged to bulbous at the base. It carries a thin, white, membranous, pendulous ring in the upper third; the ring is fragile and often collapses against the stipe or tears away in age. There is no volva, and the base sits directly in the litter, sometimes with attached mycelial threads and needle debris.
Flesh & spore print
The flesh is thin and white, and reddens rapidly and strongly when cut or bruised, taking on a salmon to blood-red tone that later dulls to brownish. The odour is mild and pleasantly mushroomy, with no aniseed and no inky note. The spore print is dark chocolate brown.
Where and when it grows
Blushing Wood Mushroom is a litter decomposer of coniferous woodland, most consistently associated with spruce but also occurring under pine, fir and larch, and occasionally in mixed woodland with a conifer component. It fruits among fallen needles, on needle-rich humus, along shaded forest tracks, on mossy banks and near old stumps, appearing singly, in scattered troops or in small loose clusters.
The season runs from late summer into late autumn, peaking in the wetter part of the year. It is widespread across Europe, temperate Asia and North America, following the distribution of conifer forest, and is especially abundant in managed spruce plantations where a deep, stable needle layer has built up.
Ecological role
This species is saprotrophic, drawing its nutrition from decomposing needle litter and humus rather than from a living partner. Conifer needles are slow to break down — they are tough, waxy and resin-rich — so the fungi that specialise in them play an outsized role in nutrient release within coniferous forest, and Agaricus silvaticus is one of the agarics that contributes to that process.
Its mycelium spreads as a diffuse network through the litter and upper soil, persisting for years and fruiting from the same ground repeatedly. The resulting breakdown of needle litter frees nitrogen and phosphorus for uptake by trees, understorey plants and other soil organisms. The fruit bodies are heavily used by slugs, small mammals and fungus-gnat larvae, and the pale broken caps left behind are a common autumn sight on plantation floors.
Similar species
Agaricus langei is the closest relative, also reddening on cutting, but is a distinctly larger and more robust fungus with darker, more uniformly chestnut-brown cap scales and an even more intense red staining reaction. Agaricus haemorrhoidarius (now often treated within the same complex) is likewise red-staining but tends to occur under broadleaved trees and reddens most strongly in the stipe base.
Wood Mushroom (Agaricus silvicola) shares the woodland habitat but has a smooth silky white cap with no brown scales, yellows rather than reddens, and smells strongly of aniseed. Inky Mushroom (Agaricus moelleri) has grey-brown rather than reddish-brown scales, stains chrome-yellow at the stipe base and has an inky odour. As always, a white spore print, permanently white gills and a sac-like volva would place a specimen in Amanita rather than Agaricus.
