Bovine Bolete Identification Guide
Identifying Suillus bovinus under pines: a slim ringless bolete with a tacky pinkish-buff cap, an overhanging rim and unmistakable wide compound pores running down the stem.
First Impression and Setting
Acid sandy ground under pines, often a plantation, a heath edge or a coastal dune woodland, in autumn after rain. Scattered across the needle litter are dozens of low, pale, slightly greasy-looking caps in a colour best described as milky tea: ochre-buff with a pink or clay tint. They are not big and not glamorous, and the first impression is of a modest, flattish bolete growing in numbers.
Two details separate it from the crowd of pale Suillus species at first glance. The cap margin is inrolled and, crucially, extends a little beyond the tube layer as a thin overhanging rim of sterile flesh, so from the side you see a pale lip. And the stipe is slender in proportion to the cap, giving the fungus a top-heavy, tack-like profile rather than the stout build of most boletes.
If you find one, look around for a second species. Bovine Bolete is frequently accompanied by a small pinkish-capped, thick-gilled mushroom growing right beside or beneath it, and that pairing is one of the more striking ecological relationships you can observe in the field.
Reading the Cap
The cap is four to ten centimetres across, convex when young, soon flat and often shallowly irregular or wavy, sometimes with a low broad umbo. The colour is pale ochre, clay-buff, pinkish-tan or dull yellow-brown, generally paler at the margin and slightly darker at the centre, and it fades in dry weather.
Texture: tacky to slightly slimy when wet, but only mildly so, drying to a smooth, slightly shiny or waxy surface. It is nothing like the heavy glutinous coat of some relatives, and the skin peels easily from the flesh.
Check the margin carefully. Young caps have the margin rolled under, and along the edge there is a narrow membrane-like extension of the cap flesh beyond the tubes. In age the margin flattens and may split or become wavy, but that overhanging rim usually leaves a visible pale border.
The Pore Surface
This is the character that finishes the identification, so give it time. Turn the cap over. The pores are large, angular and irregular, and, most importantly, compound: each big pore is subdivided internally into several smaller ones, so the surface looks like a coarse honeycomb whose cells contain further cells. Hold it up to the light and the structure is obvious.
The pores run down the stipe, distinctly decurrent, so the tube layer flows onto the stem rather than stopping at a clean edge. Colour is pale olive-buff, dull yellow, ochre or clay, sometimes with a pinkish or cinnamon tinge, and it darkens slightly with age.
Bruise the pores. Any change is slight, usually a faint pinkish or reddish-brown discolouration, and there is no strong blue reaction. The tube layer itself is shallow and cannot be separated from the cap flesh as easily as in some boletes.
Stipe, Base and Flesh
The stipe is three to six centimetres tall and slim, often less than a centimetre thick, cylindrical or tapering downward, and frequently curved or bent because the fruiting body pushes up through packed needles. Colour is concolorous with the cap or slightly paler, sometimes flushed pinkish toward the base.
Run a lens along the surface. There is no ring, no ring zone and no glandular dotting, and the surface is smooth to very faintly fibrillose. The base often carries pinkish mycelial strands binding needles and sand.
Cut the fruiting body vertically. The flesh is soft, elastic and rather rubbery in the cap, pale yellow to whitish or pale buff, and it may flush faintly pinkish where cut, particularly in the stipe base. Nothing dramatic happens; the absence of a strong colour change is part of the picture.
Taking a Spore Print
Take a mature cap, cut the stipe off flush, lay the cap pore-side-down on white paper and cover it with a bowl for six to twelve hours. The deposit is olive-brown to clay-brown or dull ochre-brown, in the normal range for the genus.
Under a lens the spores are notably long and narrow, spindle-shaped, which is one of the microscopic features that goes with the coarse compound pores. Print colour will not distinguish this species from its immediate relatives, so treat it as confirmation of genus rather than of species, and put the identification weight on the pores and the ringless slender stipe.
Substrate, Season and Ecology
Suillus bovinus is ectomycorrhizal and highly specific: it partners with two-needle pines, above all Scots pine, and is essentially confined to their root zones. Expect it on poor, sandy, acid soils, in plantations, on heaths, in dune systems and on open pine slopes, often in large scattered troops on trackside ground and in mossy needle litter.
The season is late summer through autumn, sometimes into early winter in mild years. The frequent companion mentioned earlier, a small pink-capped mushroom with thick decurrent gills, is not simply sharing habitat: it is associated with the Bovine Bolete's mycelium, and finding one is a reliable hint that the other is nearby.
Separating It From Look-alikes on Morphology
Suillus variegatus. Also a ringless pine associate of the same ground. It has a dry, distinctly scurfy or finely scaly cap with a granular feel, a more orange-brown to sandy colour, small round pores rather than large compound ones, a stouter stipe, and flesh that flushes blue when cut. The pore structure and the blueing settle it.
Suillus luteus. Has a dark chestnut-brown, strongly glutinous cap and, decisively, a large membranous ring on the stipe with purplish tones below it. Its pores are small, round, pale yellow and not compound.
Suillus granulatus. Ringless like the Bovine Bolete but with small round yellow pores that often bead with droplets when young, and with conspicuous glandular dots scattered over the upper stipe. Its cap is more orange-brown and more strongly viscid.
Suillus collinitus and S. bellinii. Both have small round pores, and S. collinitus carries pink mycelium at the base with a streaky darker cap, while S. bellinii is whiter with a very glutinous cap and a short thick stipe. Neither shows the coarse compound honeycomb.
Gyrodon and Boletinellus relatives. Have strongly decurrent, radially arranged pore surfaces that can look superficially similar, but they grow with broadleaf trees such as ash, have very shallow tube layers and often show blueing.
Any pale bolete under broadleaf trees. Habitat alone helps: this species is a pine specialist, so a candidate under oak or beech with no pine in reach needs a different name.
