The commonest of the scaber stalks, a tall grey-brown bolete of birch woodland with a slender stem roughened by dark scaly tufts.

Overview

The Brown Birch Bolete is the archetype of the genus Leccinum, the scaber stalks. These are tall, rather slim boletes whose stems are conspicuously ornamented with small projecting tufts of dark fibres called scabers, giving the stipe a rasped or file-like texture quite unlike the smooth or net-patterned stems of Boletus proper.

Leccinum scabrum is the default species of the group across the northern temperate zone, and where birch grows it is often the most abundant bolete of the season. It is a soberly coloured mushroom, in shades of mouse-grey, tan, and dull earth-brown, without the reds and oranges of some of its relatives, and its flesh is comparatively soft, becoming distinctly spongy in wet weather.

The species belongs to a genus renowned for its tight host fidelity. Most Leccinum species partner with a single tree genus, and understanding which tree stands above a scaber stalk is generally the fastest route to naming it. For L. scabrum, that tree is birch, almost without exception.

How to identify it

Cap

The cap is 5 to 15 cm across, occasionally larger, hemispherical when young and expanding to broadly convex or almost flat with age. Colour ranges from pale greyish-tan through mouse-brown to a warm mid-brown, uniform rather than patchy. The surface is smooth to very finely felted, dry in fine weather and slightly greasy or sticky after rain, and the cuticle usually overhangs the tube layer very slightly at the rim.

Pores

The tubes are whitish to pale grey-buff when young, dulling to dirty grey-brown or faintly olive as the fruit body matures. Pores are small, round, and crowded, and they are depressed around the stem apex. Bruising produces at most a faint yellowish or brownish stain, never a strong blue.

Stipe

The stem is long and slender, typically 7 to 20 cm tall, tapering upward from a slightly swollen base. The ground colour is whitish to pale grey and it is densely covered with small blackish to dark brown scabers arranged in rough vertical lines, coarsest toward the base. There is no ring and no volva.

Flesh and spore print

The flesh is white and soft, becoming waterlogged and cottony in older specimens. On cutting it changes little, at most turning faintly pinkish or greyish, and importantly it does not develop blue-green tones at the stem base. The spore print is snuff-brown to ochre-brown.

Where and when it grows

This species is found wherever birch grows across Europe, northern Asia, and North America, and has been introduced with planted birches to the southern hemisphere. It fruits in birch woodland, on birch-scattered heathland and moorland edges, in damp birch carr, and beneath ornamental birches in parks, gardens, cemeteries, and street plantings.

It tolerates a wide range of soils, from acid sand and peat to more neutral loams, and appears on both dry banks and boggy ground so long as birch is present. The season is long, typically running from midsummer to the first hard frosts of late autumn, with the heaviest flushes after prolonged rain in early autumn.

Ecological role

Leccinum scabrum is an obligate ectomycorrhizal partner of birch. Its mycelium forms a dense mantle over the fine root tips and a network of hyphae between the outer root cells, through which nutrients and water flow into the tree and carbohydrates flow back out to the fungus. Birch is a pioneer tree of poor, disturbed, often nutrient-poor ground, and this fungal partnership is central to how it succeeds there.

Because the association is so specific, the fungus can be used as an indicator of birch roots even when the trees themselves are inconspicuous, for example in heath and bog margins. The fruit bodies are short-lived, often decaying or being tunnelled by fly larvae within a week, and they release enormous numbers of airborne spores from the tube layer during that brief window.

Similar species

Other scaber stalks are the main confusions. Leccinum versipelle, the orange birch bolete, shares the birch habitat but has a bright orange to orange-brown cap and blackish scabers, and its cut flesh turns strongly grey then blackish. Leccinum variicolor has a mottled, patchily paler and darker grey-brown cap and shows a clear blue-green stain in the flesh of the stem base, a reaction absent in L. scabrum.

Leccinum holopus grows in wet birch ground but is whitish to pale greenish overall rather than brown. Leccinellum pseudoscabrum is superficially similar in colour but grows with hazel and hornbeam, has a wrinkled and pitted cap surface, and blackens strongly when cut. Away from Leccinum, Boletus species differ in having a raised net pattern on the stem instead of projecting scabers.
