Brown Field Mushroom Identification Guide
A field routine for *Agaricus spissicaulis*, the squat, thick-stemmed brown-scaled Agaricus of coastal turf and calcareous grassland, with the characters that divide it from the other stout grassland species.
The Setting and the Silhouette
Think short, hard-grazed turf with the sea somewhere nearby: fixed dune grassland, a chalk or limestone sward on a cliff top, a calcareous pasture, the mown grass of a coastal golf links or a churchyard on sandy soil. The ground is dry and firm, the grass is short, and the mushrooms often push the turf up into a small dome before they break through.
The silhouette is what distinguishes this species from a distance. It is squat and heavy: a cap of 5 to 10 centimetres carried on a stipe that is short, thick and solid, so the whole fruit body looks compressed, as though it had been pressed down from above. Many specimens never rise clear of the grass at all, and old ones sit half-buried with sand grains stuck to the cap.
Colour is the second cue. This is not a white field mushroom. The cap reads as pale with a brown wash, formed by fine brownish fibrils and small appressed scales over a whitish or pale ochre ground.
Working Through the Cap
Young caps are hemispherical with a strongly inrolled margin and thick flesh, opening slowly to convex and finally flattening, sometimes with the margin still turned under at full expansion. The surface is dry and silky-fibrillose, with the fibrils gathering into small flat scales, densest over the disc and thinning out towards the edge so that the paler ground shows through.
In dry, exposed sites the cap skin often cracks into small patches or fine areolae, especially over the centre, and the margin may split radially. Handle the cap and note that the fibrillose covering is flat-lying, never raised into coarse shaggy tiles, and never slimy.
Check the margin for veil remnants. In this species there is usually a fringe of whitish tissue hanging under the cap edge in young specimens, and it tears away as the cap expands.
The Gills
Slit the cap vertically to read the attachment properly. The gills are free, separated from the stipe apex by a clear collar-like gutter, and they are crowded, narrow and rather deep in proportion to the thick cap flesh.
Track the colour sequence. Very young gills are pale, a whitish grey or greyish pink rather than the bright rose of the common field mushroom; they pass through dull pink and then a chocolate brown, ending dark brown, almost blackish brown, with paler finely fringed edges. Because the veil stays closed for a long time in this thick-fleshed species, you will often meet buttons whose gills are still pale grey and give little information; open a second, older specimen from the same troop to see the sequence.
Stipe, Ring and Base
The stipe is the character the epithet records. It is short in relation to the cap, often only 3 to 6 centimetres long, and thick, commonly 1.5 to 2.5 centimetres or more, cylindrical to slightly tapering downwards, and solid rather than hollow. Cut it lengthwise: dense white flesh right through, not a stuffed pith.
The surface is whitish and smooth above the ring, sometimes finely fibrillose below, and it discolours dingy brownish where handled. The base is blunt or slightly narrowed and sits in a network of white mycelial cords binding sand grains and grass roots; there is no volva, no abrupt marginate bulb and no rooting extension.
The ring is membranous and set fairly high, often narrow and pressed against the stipe rather than hanging free as a broad skirt. It may be double-edged in some collections, with a slightly thickened or ragged lower margin, so check it before the specimen dries. It is easily lost in old, wind-battered material.
Flesh and Colour Change
Section the whole fruit body cleanly. The flesh is thick, firm and white. On exposure it develops a slow pinkish to dull reddish flush, most reliably in the stipe and in the cap flesh directly above the gills; the change is gentle rather than dramatic, and it fades to a dull brownish tone after an hour or so.
Scratch the very bottom of the stipe hard with a thumbnail and watch for thirty seconds. In this species there is no rapid chrome yellow reaction. Any strong, instant yellow at the base, especially if accompanied by an ink-like or chemical smell released when the cut flesh warms in the hand, moves the specimen to a different group entirely. The odour here is mild and mushroomy.
The Spore Print
Cut the stipe flush against the gills and lay the cap gill-side down, half on white and half on black paper, covered by a bowl for at least four hours. The deposit is dark chocolate brown, sometimes with a faint purplish cast. Scrape it into a compact patch to read the colour properly, since a thin dusting always looks paler.
That dark print, together with free gills and a membranous ring, confirms the genus. If the print comes out white or cream, the specimen is a parasol or a related white-spored species and everything above must be re-examined.
Substrate, Season and Ecology
The species is saprotrophic in grassland soil, breaking down organic matter in the turf rather than partnering with tree roots. It favours calcareous, sandy and coastal ground: stabilised dunes, cliff-top swards, machair, limestone pasture and short mown grass near the coast. It also turns up inland on chalky soils and in disturbed grassy places such as track edges and lawns over lime-rich substrate.
Fruiting runs from summer into autumn, often beginning after the first substantial rain following a dry spell, and it can appear in arcs or rings where the mycelium has spread outwards through the turf.
Separating the Look-alikes
Agaricus campestris, the common field mushroom, has a smooth white cap with at most silky fibrils, a slimmer tapering stipe, bright rose-pink young gills and a thin, quickly vanishing ring. It lacks both the brown fibrillose scaling and the heavy build.
Agaricus bernardii is another stocky, salt-tolerant grassland species, but its cap breaks up into coarse concentric scales and warts, its flesh reddens strongly and quickly, its ring is thick and sheathing, and it has a strong distinctive smell.
Agaricus bitorquis shares the compact stature and firm flesh but has a smooth whitish cap and a characteristic double ring, the lower part forming a sheath or upturned collar around the stipe; it is typically a species of compacted paths and urban ground.
Agaricus xanthodermus and its allies are ruled out by the instant chrome yellow at the scratched stipe base and by their smoother, greying caps.
Agaricus bresadolanus and similar species produce conspicuous root-like rhizomorphs at the stipe base, which this species does not.
Finally, check parasols. Chlorophyllum and Macrolepiota species also carry free gills and a ring, but their gills remain white or cream, their spore print is pale, and their stipes are slender relative to the cap rather than stubby and solid.
