Brown Shaggy Parasol Identification Guide

A step-by-step read of *Chlorophyllum brunneum*, the coarse-scaled parasol of compost, wood chip and disturbed ground, built around its abruptly rimmed basal bulb, simple ring and reddening flesh.

First Impression and the Ground You Are Standing On

The habitat is a strong first clue because this species likes disturbance and richness. Compost heaps and their surroundings, fresh wood chip mulch on a border, the nettly edge of a manure pile, a hedge bottom on farmland, a dune slack behind the fore-dunes, roadside verges and garden beds: nutrient-loaded, often recently disturbed ground.

What you see is substantial. Caps of 6 to 15 centimetres, sometimes larger, pale and shaggy with coarse brown scales, on thick whitish stems, standing singly, in small groups or in loose arcs. From a few paces the impression is of a pale mushroom that has been torn into patches, the brown scales sitting on a whitish ground like broken tiles.

Compared with the tall, slender parasols of open woodland and pasture, the build here is stocky: the stipe is shorter relative to the cap, thicker, and finished at the bottom with a conspicuous swelling that you must expose.

Reading the Cap

Young caps are barrel-shaped to ovoid with an almost unbroken brown surface, and as they expand that brown skin splits into large, coarse, often upturned scales, revealing whitish flesh between them. The centre usually remains an unbroken brown disc, which is a good anchor point for the eye.

Expanded caps are convex to nearly flat, sometimes with the margin lifting in age, and the margin often carries hanging fragments of the veil. The scales themselves are worth touching: thick, fibrous, felted patches, standing proud of the surface, quite unlike the flat silky fibrils on a brown-capped Agaricus.

The overall tone is warm brown to greyish brown on a whitish to cream ground. Weather affects the appearance considerably; a rain-hammered specimen may have lost most of its scales except over the disc.

The Gills

The gills are free and, importantly, they are broadly free: there is a wide gutter between the gill edges and the stipe, and in many specimens the gills are attached to a collar of tissue around the stipe apex, so that the whole gill assembly can be lifted away almost like a plate.

They are crowded, broad, soft and white to cream when fresh, discolouring dingy brownish or reddish brown where bruised or with age, with finely fringed edges. They do not turn pink, and they never turn chocolate brown as the spores mature, which is what distinguishes the whole parasol group from the true mushrooms at a glance.

Stipe, Ring and the Key Bulb

The stipe is 8 to 15 centimetres long and 1 to 2 centimetres thick, smooth and whitish, sometimes discolouring brownish downward, and, crucially, not patterned. There is no snakeskin girdling or zigzag banding on the stem surface.

Dig the base out completely, using a knife and taking the surrounding compost or chip with it, because the single most valuable character in this species lies underground. The stipe ends in a large, abruptly marginate basal bulb: a flattened, sharply rimmed swelling whose top edge forms a distinct shelf or gutter, as though the stem had been pushed into a shallow saucer. Run a fingernail around the top of the bulb and it should catch on that rim.

The ring is simple: a single, fairly thick, whitish band, often with a brown edge and a slightly ragged underside, which is movable up and down the stipe once the fruit body has expanded. It is not built of two distinct layers with a thick, cog-wheel-like lower edge.

Flesh and Colour Change

Cut a fresh fruit body cleanly from cap centre through the bulb and watch the exposed surfaces. The white flesh, particularly in the stipe and just above the gills, flushes orange-red to reddish brown over a minute or two, then dulls to brown. The reaction is often strongest in the upper stipe and in the gill trama, and it is easiest to see on a young, well-hydrated specimen; in dry weather it can be slow and muted.

Scratched gill edges and rubbed cap flesh also discolour reddish brown. Old fruit bodies may be brown throughout and show no fresh reaction at all, so test on a young cap where possible.

Taking and Reading a Spore Print

Cut the stipe flush against the gills and lay the cap gill-side down on paper, half white and half black, with a cover over it, for four hours or overnight.

The deposit here is white to pale cream, sometimes with the faintest greenish or olive suggestion in a very thick smear but never a definite green. That is a critical reading. Scrape the deposit into a compact patch on white paper and view it in daylight, because green is easy to miss when the deposit is thin and easy to imagine when the light is poor. A clearly green print takes you to a different species of the genus, while a dark chocolate brown print means the specimen was never a parasol at all.

Substrate, Season and Ecology

This is a saprotroph of rich, disturbed organic soils. It thrives on compost, decaying wood chip, manured ground, dune sand enriched with organic matter, and the churned edges of paths and stock feeding areas. In gardens it often arrives with a delivery of mulch and fruits abundantly for a season or two before declining as the chip breaks down.

The main season runs from late summer into late autumn, with fruiting triggered by rain after warm spells. Because the mycelium follows the mulch rather than a tree partner, colonies are mobile between years, which itself is a soft clue when you meet a large parasol on a garden border.

Separating the Look-alikes

Chlorophyllum rhacodes is the closest. Its stipe base is club-shaped or bulbous but tapers gradually, without the abrupt shelf-like rim, and its ring is complex, with a thickened double margin. It leans towards woodland litter, conifer plantations and hedge banks rather than raw compost and chip.

Chlorophyllum olivieri has duller, greyish to olive-brown, more felted and less contrasting cap scales, so the cap looks smoother and drabber, and it too lacks the abruptly marginate bulb.

Chlorophyllum molybdites is decided by the spore print: a distinct dull green deposit, with gills that eventually take on a greenish cast. It is a lawn species of warm regions with a paler, less coarsely scaly cap.

Macrolepiota procera is taller and slimmer, with a cap bearing smaller, more regularly arranged scales, a long stipe conspicuously girdled with a brown snakeskin pattern, a large complex double movable ring, and flesh that scarcely changes colour when cut.

Amanita species with scaly caps are separated by the base: they sit in a sac-like volva or a rimmed bulb bearing volval remnants, their cap scales are veil patches easily washed off, and they lack the sliding thick ring plus reddening flesh combination.

Leucoagaricus americanus also reddens and grows on wood chip, but its stipe is spindle-shaped and swollen in the middle rather than ending in a rimmed bulb, and the whole fruit body ages wine-red.

Compact Field Routine
