Bulbous Honey Fungus Identification Guide

How to recognise Armillaria gallica in the field by its swollen stem base, cobwebby yellow-flecked ring and prolific black bootlace rhizomorphs.

The Setting And The First Look

You usually meet the Bulbous Honey Fungus in late summer or autumn in damp broadleaf woodland, standing on soil that is quietly full of buried wood. The fruit bodies do not always announce a stump. They come up scattered or in loose handfuls through leaf litter, sometimes several metres from anything obviously dead, because the fungus is running through roots and buried fragments below your feet.

The first impression is of a soft, honey-toned mushroom with a slightly shaggy centre, gills that run a little way down the stem, and a stem that swells noticeably toward the bottom into a club or an onion. Where a classic honey fungus grows in tight bouquets from a stump base, this one tends to be more solitary or in small loose clusters, and it looks lighter, softer and less aggressive in build.

Reading The Cap

The cap is 3 to 10 cm across, convex at first and then flattening with a low broad umbo. Colour is pale ochre, tan, honey-yellow or a soft yellow-brown, generally paler and more washed-out than a well-coloured Armillaria mellea, and it often fades further with weathering.

The surface texture is the useful part. Look at the disc with a hand lens: the centre carries fine, erect, slightly darker or yellowish scales that thin out toward the margin, so the outer half of the cap is nearly smooth. The margin itself is often fringed with pale yellowish veil remnants when young, and it is faintly striate in wet weather. The flesh of the cap is thin toward the edge and the whole cap feels soft rather than firm.

Gills, Stem And The Cobwebby Ring

The gills are the standard honey fungus arrangement: attached and running a short distance down the stem, moderately crowded, whitish to cream when young, and staining and spotting brownish or rusty with age and handling. Old specimens often look freckled along the gill faces.

The stem is where this species declares itself. It is 5 to 12 cm long and tapers upward from a base that is distinctly swollen, sometimes evenly club-shaped and sometimes an abrupt bulb like a small onion. Above the ring the stem is pale and smooth; below it the surface is often covered in fine yellowish fibrils or flecks.

The ring itself is the second key. It is thin, cottony to almost cobwebby, and edged or dusted with yellow flecks. In many specimens it does not hold together as a proper skirt at all but collapses into a woolly yellowish zone on the stem, and by late maturity it can be reduced to a faint band. This is quite different from the thick, persistent, white membranous collar of the classic honey fungus, and once you have compared the two in the hand the distinction is easy.

Flesh And Colour Change

Split a fruit body vertically. The flesh is white to cream, firm in the stem base and softer in the cap, and it does not undergo any dramatic colour change on exposure. Older stem bases may look slightly brownish or water-soaked inside. The absence of a strong reaction is itself informative in a genus where nothing much changes colour.

The Rhizomorphs

Do not stop at the fruit body. Scrape back the litter and the top few centimetres of soil around the cluster, and peel a flap of bark from any nearby dead root or buried stick. This species is a prolific producer of rhizomorphs: slender, wiry, black or very dark brown cords, branching freely and running for long distances through soil and litter like bootlaces. In good conditions they form dense networks, and finding an abundant fine black network is a strong supporting character for this species over its relatives, which tend to produce fewer, coarser cords.

Taking A Spore Print

Use a fully expanded cap, remove the stem cleanly, and set the cap gills-down on a sheet that is half white and half dark, since a pale print can vanish on white paper. Cover it, leave it for several hours or overnight, and read the result in good light. The print is white to very pale cream.

That white print matters. It immediately removes the rusty-spored genera that produce similar clustered brownish woodland mushrooms, and it keeps you within the honey fungus group where the ring, the stem base and the rhizomorphs then do the fine work.

Substrate, Habit And Season

The fungus lives on and around dead and dying hardwood, especially beech and oak, and it operates largely on buried roots, stumps ground down below the surface, and woody debris in the litter layer. As a result the fruit bodies frequently appear to grow from bare soil. It behaves mostly as a decomposer of dead wood and is comparatively mild in its dealings with living trees, which is one reason it is so common in ordinary undisturbed woodland.

Fruiting runs from late summer into autumn, often peaking a little earlier than the heavy stump-clustering species, and the habit is scattered to loosely grouped rather than densely tufted.

Separating The Look-Alikes On Structure

Armillaria mellea grows in dense caespitose tufts joined at the base, has a firmer honey to tawny cap with dark bristly scales concentrated at the disc, a stem that is not bulbous, and above all a thick, persistent, white membranous ring. Its rhizomorph production is far less conspicuous.

Armillaria ostoyae, the dark honey fungus, has a browner cap with coarse dark brown scales spread well beyond the centre, a thick ring with a dark scaly outer edge, and a strong conifer association. Its stem base is often swollen but the ring alone separates it.

Armillaria cepistipes is the genuinely difficult one, since it too has a swollen base and a slight, evanescent ring. Work on cap colour and scaling: cepistipes tends to be greyer or duller brown with very sparse, fine scales and a more slender build, and it leans more toward conifers and disturbed ground.

Desarmillaria tabescens, the ringless honey fungus, is unmistakable once checked because it has no ring or ring zone whatsoever and grows in tight clusters on hardwood.

Pholiota and Hypholoma species can produce similar clustered brown mushrooms on wood, but their spore prints are rusty brown and purple-brown respectively, and neither produces bootlace rhizomorphs. Check the print before you agonise over the cap.
