First Impressions In Spring Woodland
The Bull-nose False Morel turns up in spring, often while the ground is still cool and the canopy is only half open. You are typically in hardwood forest, on damp soil under oak, elm, aspen or an old orchard edge, and the thing that stops you is a brown lump that at first glance could be a fallen leaf mass or a clod of soil. Then you see the pale stalk underneath.
The common name is a good mnemonic. The head sits low and blunt on a thick pale stalk, with a few broad rounded lobes that fold over one another like the muzzle of an animal. It looks solid and heavy compared with the airy, pitted cone of a true morel, and its outline is lumpy rather than regularly patterned.
Reading The Head
The head is roughly 4 to 12 cm broad and often about as tall as it is wide. Its structure is the first thing to establish, because this is where every false morel question gets settled.
Look for broad, blunt lobes, usually two to four of them, giving a saddle-like or irregularly folded outline. The surface between the lobes is wrinkled, undulating and sometimes shallowly brain-like, but it is never divided into a network of sharply defined pits separated by raised ridges. That distinction, wrinkles and folds versus pits and ridges, is the whole ball game against true morels, and it is worth spending a full minute on.
Colour runs from tan through cinnamon and reddish-brown to a deep dark brown, and it darkens with age and drying. The underside of the lobes, which is sterile, is paler, whitish to buff, and often finely mealy or downy.
Now check the attachment. Turn the fruit body over and probe where the lobes meet the stalk. In this species the margin of the head is fused to the stalk in places, often at several points, and the lobes then flare outward. It is neither the full-length fusion of a true morel nor the free hanging skirt of a Verpa.
The Spore-Bearing Surface
This is an ascomycete, which changes how you think about the fertile surface. There are no gills, pores or teeth anywhere. The spores are produced in microscopic sacs packed across the outer, upper surface of the head, so the brown wrinkled exterior is itself the fertile tissue, and the paler underside is sterile.
One consequence worth noticing in the field: on a warm morning a ripe specimen can visibly puff. Breathe on the head or tap it gently and a faint pale cloud may drift off the upper surface. That behaviour tells you at once that you are not looking at a gilled mushroom.
Stalk, Base And Flesh
The stalk is stout, 3 to 8 cm long and often 2 to 5 cm thick, whitish to cream or pale buff, sometimes flushed pinkish or brownish with age. Its surface is ribbed, folded and lumpy rather than smooth, with irregular longitudinal creases running down it.
Slice the whole fruit body vertically, which is the single most informative cut you can make. Inside, the stalk is not a simple open tube. It is divided into chambers and pockets by internal folds of tissue, so the cross section looks like a rough honeycomb or a series of blind alleys. The flesh itself is thin, whitish and brittle, snapping cleanly rather than bending.
There is no notable colour change on cutting. The cut faces stay whitish, perhaps browning slowly at the edges as they dry.
Getting A Spore Print
Spore prints from this group are fiddly but perfectly possible. Because the fertile layer is on the outside of the head, you cannot simply set a cap face-down on paper and expect a clean deposit. Instead, cut the head from the stalk, rest it on white paper or foil with the outer surface angled downward, and cover it with a bowl to hold humidity. Leave it several hours.
What you get is a faint whitish to pale cream deposit, often patchy and following the contours of the lobes rather than making a neat radial pattern. The point of the exercise is confirmation of category rather than a beautiful print: a pale, non-radial deposit from an outer surface confirms an ascomycete and rules out every gilled brown-spored mushroom.
Under a microscope the spores are ellipsoid with smooth to finely roughened walls, and typically contain a pair of prominent oil droplets, with small blunt apiculi at each end in this part of the genus.
Substrate And Season
Fruiting is a spring event, generally coinciding with or slightly preceding the main true morel season in the same region. The fungus fruits from soil, humus and buried woody debris in hardwood forest, favouring damp loamy ground under oak, elm, ash, aspen and old orchard trees, and it also appears along woodland tracks and on disturbed ground where soil has been turned.
Fruit bodies are usually scattered or in small groups, and because their colour matches the leaf litter almost exactly, systematic slow searching pays off far better than a fast walk. Look on gentle slopes and around the drip line of large hardwoods.
Separating The Look-Alikes On Structure
True morels (Morchella species) have a head that is honeycombed with distinct pits enclosed by raised ridges, the head margin is fused to the stalk all the way around at the very bottom, and a vertical cut reveals one single continuous hollow running from the tip of the head to the base of the stalk. The Bull-nose has folds rather than pits and a chambered, partitioned interior.
Verpa bohemica and Verpa conica have a head attached only at the very apex, hanging free like a thimble on a finger, and Verpa bohemica has strongly longitudinally wrinkled ribs. Probe the attachment and the difference is obvious.
Gyromitra esculenta has a much more convoluted, tightly folded, brain-like head in reddish-brown tones, a comparatively slender stalk, and a far more crumpled outline than the broad blunt lobes seen here.
Gyromitra caroliniana is larger and typically redder, with a deeply and elaborately convoluted head and a massive chambered stalk.
Gyromitra brunnea has a head divided into two or three sharply defined, well-separated, dark brown lobes with wavy margins, giving an elephant-ear look, contrasted against a strikingly white ribbed stalk. Its lobes are flatter and more sheet-like than the rounded folds of the Bull-nose.
Discina and Gyromitra ancilis are cup-like to saucer-like, sitting almost stalkless on wood or soil, with none of the lobed head architecture.
