Butter Bolete Identification Guide
Working through Butyriboletus appendiculatus in the field: the tan velvet cap, chrome-yellow pores, finely netted rooting stipe and slow faint blueing, plus how it differs from the other yellow-pored boletes.
The Wood and the First Impression
This is a bolete of warm, well-lit broadleaf woodland on richer soils, most often where oak dominates, sometimes with beech, hornbeam or sweet chestnut. It leans towards calcareous or at least base-rich ground, sunny southern slopes, wood pasture and the open margins of old woods rather than dense, dark, acid interiors. It fruits from midsummer into early autumn, arriving on the back of warm rain.
The first sighting is of a substantial, warm-toned bolete: a broad hazel-brown to tan cap, a heavy stature, and — when you get closer — a startling flash of chrome yellow underneath. That contrast between a matt, quietly coloured cap and a vivid lemon-yellow pore surface is the impression to fix in mind, because it immediately separates this from the white-pored group.
Reading the Cap
The cap measures 6 to 20 cm across, occasionally larger, hemispherical and firmly tucked under at first, then broadly convex and finally cushion-shaped. Its surface is dry and finely velvety or suede-like, never slimy, and in dry spells it develops fine cracks or a shallow crazed pattern towards the margin, through which pale yellowish flesh shows. Colour ranges through warm tan, hazel, ochre-brown and light chestnut, sometimes with a paler cream or buff zone at the rim and occasionally with a faint reddish-brown flush in the centre. Rub the cap surface firmly with a thumb and watch for a slow, faint blue-grey darkening; it is often present but always subtle, and its absence does not disqualify the species.
The Pore Surface
Turn the fruitbody over and study the underside carefully; it carries three separate characters. First, colour: the pores are bright lemon to chrome yellow from an early stage, dulling towards olive-yellow only in old age. Second, size: they are very small and round, giving the surface a fine, dense, almost powdery-looking texture, and they are usually depressed around the stipe apex. Third, reaction: press firmly with a fingertip and hold for twenty to thirty seconds. The bruise should be a slow, modest blue or blue-green that develops over seconds rather than instantly, and it often fades back towards dirty yellow after a minute or two. A violent, immediate ink-blue reaction points elsewhere.
Split the tube layer away from the cap flesh with a fingernail; it separates cleanly and the tubes themselves are yellow, matching the pore mouths, with a paler line where they join the flesh.
The Stipe, Net and Rooting Base
The stipe is stout, 5 to 15 cm long and 2 to 5 cm thick, club-shaped or barrel-like when young, often becoming more cylindrical with age, and firm and solid throughout. Its colour is bright yellow at the apex, fading to yellow-buff in the middle and taking on brownish, ochre or dull reddish tones towards the base — but the redness is diffuse staining, not a pattern of red dots or a red net.
Use a lens on the upper stipe. You should find a fine, shallow, yellow reticulum: a delicate raised mesh, concolorous with the stipe or only a little more ochre, usually restricted to the top third and fading downward. The mesh is fine and low, not the bold coarse cage of some relatives, and it is never red.
The base is the character the species name records. Excavate the whole fruitbody rather than cutting it, and you should find the stipe drawn out below into a narrowed, pointed, rooting appendage that pushes down into the soil, sometimes several centimetres long, bound with white mycelial strands. That taproot-like extension is a strong supporting feature.
Flesh and Colour Change
Slice the fruitbody in half lengthwise and watch the cut face for two or three minutes. The flesh is firm and pale yellow — not white — throughout the cap and stipe, and it deepens to a stronger yellow just above the tubes. On exposure it flushes faintly blue in the cap and immediately over the tube layer, then usually fades. In the lower stipe and rooting base the flesh shows a wine-red, brownish or beetroot tint that may deepen slightly. The combination of yellow flesh, weak and transient blueing above, and reddish tones in the base is more informative than any single one of those observations.
Taking and Reading a Spore Print
Cut the cap free at the top of the tubes, set it pore-side down on white paper, and cover with a bowl to hold humidity. Mature caps with swollen tubes usually print within four to six hours; a young firm cap may need overnight. Read the deposit in daylight against white, then against black. The expected colour is olive-brown — brown with a definite green cast — which is standard for the group and confirms you are among the boletes rather than looking at a polypore or a gilled mushroom whose underside has been misread.
Season, Substrate and Ecology
Butyriboletus appendiculatus is mycorrhizal with broadleaf trees, chiefly oak and beech, forming sheaths around fine roots and exchanging soil nutrients for tree-derived sugars. It grows from soil among litter, never on wood, dung or compost, and it fruits from roughly June to September in warm seasons, favouring the sunnier, drier, lime-rich parts of a wood. Fruitbodies emerge singly or in small groups and often recur in the same spot for years. Insect larvae work through the stipe quickly, so a firm young fruitbody gives far better colour readings than a mature one.
Separating It From Look-alikes
Boletus edulis and its allies have white pores that age to cream and olive, never bright chrome yellow, and their flesh is white and unchanging.
Butyriboletus regius shares the yellow pores and fine net but has a rose-pink to carmine cap. Butyriboletus fechtneri has a whitish, pale grey or silvery cap and blues more strongly, with a redder stipe zone.
Neoboletus luridiformis has orange-red pore mouths, a stipe covered in dense red-orange dots rather than a net, and flesh that turns dark blue almost instantly. Suillellus luridus has orange to blood-red pore mouths, an olive-brown cap, a coarse raised red net over most of the stipe, and a distinct orange-red band at the top of the tube layer visible in section.
Caloboletus calopus has a pale grey to buff cap, a striking red lower stipe with a conspicuous net, and flesh that blues promptly and strongly.
Hemileccinum impolitum shares the tan cap and yellow pores but has a stipe with no reticulum at all, only fine granular dots, and its flesh scarcely blues.
Anything with a slimy cap, a ring, or glandular dots on the stipe belongs with Suillus and conifers, not here.
