California Agaricus Identification Guide

A step-by-step field read of Agaricus californicus, the winter lawn mushroom with free chocolate-brown gills, a thick pendulous ring and a yellowing stem base.

Where You Will Be Standing

The California Agaricus is a mushroom of managed ground. You meet it on irrigated lawns, in park turf, along landscaped verges, in garden beds under ornamental plantings, and in the leaf litter beneath coast live oaks in Californian towns and suburbs. It appears after the rains arrive, from autumn through winter and into early spring, and it can fruit in numbers, in scattered troops, rings or arcs across a lawn.

The first impression is of a solid, clean-looking, white to greyish mushroom with a smooth domed cap and a distinct skirt hanging on the stem. It looks like the generic idea of a mushroom, which is exactly why it needs working through carefully rather than assumed.

Reading The Cap

The cap is 4 to 12 cm across, hemispherical to broadly convex when young and flattening in age, sometimes with a slightly squared-off or truncate look on the button.

The surface is dry and silky. Colour is whitish to pale grey or greyish-brown, and the centre is typically a shade darker than the margin. Under a lens you will usually see the disc covered in fine appressed brownish or greyish fibrils or minute scales that thin out toward the edge, so the cap grades from a slightly darker, more fibrillose middle to a paler smoother rim. Weathered specimens can go almost pure white.

Rub the cap surface firmly. It commonly stains yellowish where handled, particularly toward the margin, and this discoloration is worth checking on several specimens because it can be faint on young or dry material.

Reading The Gills

Turn the cap over and check the attachment first, because this genus is defined by it. The gills are free: they stop short of the stem, leaving a visible gap or collar between the gill ends and the stem surface. Slice a cap in half vertically and the gap is unmistakable.

The gills are crowded and narrow, and their colour runs through a sequence that tells you the age of the specimen. In the button they are whitish to pale grey or faintly pink. As the fruit body opens they turn a clear dusky pink or greyish pink. Finally, as the spores mature, they darken through chocolate to a deep blackish brown. Collect specimens of several ages if you can, because the whitish-to-pink-to-chocolate sequence is a genus-level confirmation.

Stem, Ring And Base

The stem is 4 to 10 cm long, white, smooth above the ring and often slightly fibrillose below, and it is fairly even in width with a base that is a little swollen or club-shaped rather than bulbous with a rim.

The ring is a strong character. It is large, thick and pendulous, hanging like a skirt from the upper third of the stem, and its underside is often felted or cottony, sometimes with a slightly double or layered edge. It persists well and rarely vanishes entirely.

Slice the stem lengthwise from the ring right through the base. In this species the cut surfaces of the stem, and especially the base, commonly develop a yellow flush over the following seconds to a minute or two, sometimes fading again as the tissue dries. Watch the very bottom of the stem in particular.

A drop of dilute potassium hydroxide on the cap surface produces a prompt yellow reaction, which is a standard chemical check within this genus and confirms membership of the yellow-staining group.

This species also carries a distinctly chemical, phenolic, inky odour, most noticeable in the cut stem base and much stronger if you seal a specimen in a container for a few minutes. Anise and almond notes are absent. Odour is a genuine identification character here and is easy to check.

Flesh And Colour Change

The flesh is white and firm. In the cap it changes little, perhaps flushing faintly. In the stem, and especially the stem base, it flushes yellow as described above. There is no reddening on cutting, which is a point of difference from a number of woodland relatives.

Taking A Spore Print

This is straightforward because the deposit is dark and heavy. Take a cap whose gills have gone at least chocolate brown, cut the stem flush, set the cap gills-down on white paper, cover it with a bowl, and leave it for a few hours.

The print is dark chocolate brown, sometimes reading almost blackish-brown when thick. A dark brown print combined with free gills and a well-formed ring places you firmly in this genus and rules out every white-spored genus at a stroke.

Habitat, Ecology And Season

The species is a decomposer of rich organic material in soil, which is why it thrives in irrigated, mulched, fertilised ground. Typical sites are lawns, playing fields, park borders, garden beds, roadside plantings and the litter under urban and suburban oaks. It fruits from soil, never from wood, and it appears in response to rain during the cool half of the year, with the main season running from autumn through winter.

It is a Californian and West Coast species and is very much associated with human-modified landscapes rather than deep wildland.

Separating The Look-Alikes On Structure

Agaricus campestris, the field mushroom, shares grassland habitat but has a bright pink young gill stage, a thin, simple, often fragile ring that frequently tears away, a stem tapering toward the base, no yellow staining and no chemical odour.

Agaricus xanthodermus is the closest relative in the yellow-staining group. It is generally whiter and smoother, with a squarish button, and its key difference is the intensity and location of the reaction: scratching the stem base produces an immediate, vivid chrome-yellow flush that is far brighter and faster than in the California Agaricus. Cap colour and the greyish fibrillose disc help separate them.

Agaricus arvensis and Agaricus augustus yellow readily but have a sweet almond odour rather than a phenolic one, and Agaricus augustus has a large cap densely covered in tawny-brown scales over a cream ground.

Agaricus bitorquis grows in hard-packed ground and has a low, sheathing double ring near the middle or bottom of the stem rather than a high pendulous skirt.

Chlorophyllum species, which also grow in lawns and gardens, have a much scalier cap over a white ground, and Chlorophyllum molybdites gives a green spore print, which no member of this genus does. Always print anything large and scaly from a lawn.

Amanita species are the important structural check. They also have free gills, but their spore print is white, their gills stay white or cream and never go pink then chocolate, and their stem base sits in a volva, a sac or a rim of universal veil tissue. Dig the base out completely on every white lawn mushroom and look for it.

Three linked checks.
