A miniature foliose lichen forming bright egg-yellow patches of tiny fringed lobes on the bark of roadside and parkland trees.

Overview

Candleflame Lichen scatters small, intensely yellow patches across bark, each patch only a centimetre or two wide but often massed until whole branches look dusted with sulphur. Under a hand lens the apparently granular crust resolves into a rosette of minuscule leafy lobes, rarely more than a millimetre wide, with finely divided and fringed margins.

It belongs to Candelaria in the Candelariaceae, a small family of yellow lichens pigmented by calycin and related compounds. The genus is foliose — genuinely lobed and loosely attached — whereas its close relative Candelariella is crustose and forms granular smears with no lobes at all.

Candelaria concolor is one of the most pollution-tolerant and nitrogen-loving lichens in settled landscapes, thriving on roadside trees, farmyard timber and park specimens where dust and nutrient enrichment discourage more sensitive species.

How to identify it

Thallus

Foliose but minute: small rosettes or irregular cushions 0.5–3 cm across, made of lobes only 0.2–1 mm wide. Patches frequently merge into extensive yellow crusts on branch surfaces, which is why it is so often mistaken for a crustose lichen at arm's length.

Lobes and surface

Bright egg-yellow to greenish yellow, sometimes duller ochre in shade. Lobe tips are flattened, notched and finely divided, and the margins break down into granular, mealy soredia that give the whole colony a powdery yellow appearance.

Lower surface

White to pale cream with sparse, short, pale rhizines — visible only under magnification, but decisive, since a genuine crustose lichen has no separable lower surface at all.

Apothecia

Uncommon. When produced they are small, 0.5–1.5 mm, with a yellow to orange-yellow disc and a thin lobed thalline rim. Chemically the yellow pigment does not react with potassium hydroxide, which distinguishes the Candelariaceae from orange Xanthoria species that turn deep purple with K.

Where and when it grows

Candleflame Lichen grows mainly on bark, favouring nutrient-enriched, slightly basic substrates: roadside and parkland trees such as maple, ash, elm, poplar, oak and fruit trees, together with fence rails, old timber, and occasionally concrete, mortar and gravestones. It particularly likes twigs and branches with dust deposition or run-off enrichment.

The species is cosmopolitan, common through temperate North America and Europe and reported widely elsewhere. It is perennial and evergreen, present in all seasons, and its colour is unaffected by wetting, so it is as easy to spot in a winter downpour as in summer sun.

Ecological role

The fungal partner encloses a green algal photobiont and derives all its water and nutrients from rain, mist and airborne dust. That reliance on atmospheric supply makes the species a useful indicator: it flourishes where nitrogen deposition from traffic, agriculture and dust is high, and its spread over the past decades has tracked nutrient enrichment in many regions.

It is chiefly a bark epiphyte with no penetration into living tissue, so it neither feeds on nor damages the tree, simply using bark as a perch. Dispersal is overwhelmingly vegetative: the marginal soredia — tiny bundles of algal cells wrapped in fungal threads — break away and are carried by wind, rain splash and insects to new bark.

Similar species

Candelariella species, especially C. vitellina on rock and C. xanthostigma on bark, are the commonest confusion. They are crustose, forming granular or warty yellow smears with no true lobes and no white lower surface; a hand lens showing flattened, fringed lobe tips confirms Candelaria.

Xanthoria parietina and Xanthomendoza species are also yellow to orange and foliose, but their lobes are far larger (several millimetres wide), the colour is warmer orange, and the pigment turns purple-red when a drop of potassium hydroxide is applied — a reaction absent in Candleflame Lichen. Candelaria fibrosa is closely related but has larger, longer, more strap-like lobes without the dense marginal soredia of C. concolor.
