A small conifer-woodland dapperling with a starkly two-toned cap: near-black scales scattered over a white ground around a dark disc, above a slender stem with a distinct dark-edged ring.
Overview
Lepiota felina is a small, sharply marked dapperling of coniferous woodland, notable for the strong contrast between its blackish-brown scales and the white cap surface beneath them. Where relatives such as L. cristata are washed with softer reddish-brown, this species reads as almost black and white in the field, an unusually crisp pattern for a group otherwise dominated by muted browns.
The genus Lepiota, in the Agaricaceae, comprises small to medium fungi with gills free of the stem, a white spore print, and a cap cuticle that fragments into scales. L. felina adds a comparatively well-formed ring, often with a dark brown edge left by the veil - a helpful character, since many small dapperlings retain only a vague fibrillose zone.
It is chiefly a European species of spruce and pine forests, appearing in autumn among needle litter and moss. Its small size and dark colouring make it easy to miss on the forest floor, and it is generally reported as scattered rather than abundant.
How to identify it
Cap
2-4 cm across, convex to bell-shaped when young, flattening in age with a low umbo. The centre carries a dark brown to blackish disc of intact cuticle, and around it the surface is white to pale grey, dotted with small, dark blackish-brown to sepia scales that stand slightly proud of the surface and are denser toward the middle. The margin is thin, sometimes hung with fine white veil remnants.
Gills
Free from the stem, crowded, narrow, white to cream, unchanging or at most ageing slightly buff. The gill edges are finely floccose under a lens.
Stipe
3-6 cm tall and 2-5 mm thick, slender, hollow, white and smooth above the ring, and below it dressed with sparse brownish fibrils or small dark scaly zones on a whitish ground. The ring is comparatively distinct for the genus - a narrow, white, membranous band, usually finished with a darker brown edge - though it may collapse against the stem in older specimens.
Flesh & spore print
Flesh thin and white, sometimes discolouring faintly brownish in the stem base, otherwise unchanging. The spore print is white, and the spores are small, smooth and ellipsoid to slightly bullet-shaped.
Where and when it grows
The Cat Dapperling is closely tied to coniferous woodland, growing on needle litter, mossy ground and humus under spruce, pine and fir, and occasionally in mixed stands with a conifer component. It favours shaded, damp, sheltered spots along path edges, in moss cushions and where needle drift accumulates, appearing singly or in small scattered groups.
It is widespread but never common through temperate and northern Europe, with records extending into Asia and reports of similar material in North America. Fruiting is concentrated in autumn, after the first sustained rains cool and wet the litter layer, and continues until the first hard frosts.
Ecological role
This species is a saprotroph of coniferous litter. Needle litter is comparatively resistant to decay - resinous, waxy and acidic - and fungi able to work through it play an important part in nutrient turnover in spruce and pine forests. The mycelium of L. felina permeates the partly decomposed needle mat, breaking down cellulose and lignin and helping build the humus layer.
It forms no partnership with tree roots, though it depends entirely on the annual needle fall those trees produce. Fruiting bodies are small and short-lived, developing quickly in the humid autumn litter, releasing white spores from the free gills and decaying within days.
Similar species
Lepiota cristata is the commonest confusion: it has flatter, reddish-brown rather than blackish scales, occurs in broadleaf woods, grass and gardens as often as under conifers, and its ring is thinner and more fugitive. Lepiota castanea is warmer chestnut-brown with fine granular scaling and only a faint ring zone.
Lepiota clypeolaria and L. magnispora are larger with shaggy woolly stems and pale ochre scales rather than crisp dark ones. Echinoderma asperum is much bulkier with erect pyramidal spines over the whole cap, and Cystolepiota species are tiny with a powdery, mealy surface instead of discrete scales.
