Cedarwood Waxcap Identification Guide
A close-range field guide to *Cuphophyllus russocoriaceus*, the tiny white grassland waxcap with decurrent waxy gills whose warm cedarwood scent is the character that clinches it.
The Setting and the First Impression
This is a hands-and-knees mushroom in a hands-and-knees habitat. The Cedarwood Waxcap belongs to old, unimproved, moss-rich grassland: long-established pasture that has never been fertilised or ploughed, upland sheep-grazed hill turf, churchyards and cemeteries mown for a century, lawns of country houses, dune grassland and machair. The sward is short, the moss layer is thick, and the soil is nutrient-poor.
You rarely find it alone. It fruits alongside the rest of the grassland guild: other waxcaps in reds, yellows and greys, earthtongues pushing black tongues through the moss, coral fungi of the genus Clavaria, and pinkgills. Once you have found one waxcap patch, drop down and search it systematically, because the smallest white species is exactly the one that gets walked past.
The first impression is of a very small, pure white mushroom, one to two and a half centimetres across, sitting low in the moss with its gills running visibly down the stem. There is nothing dramatic about the appearance at all. The character that turns a maybe into a confident call is the smell.
Reading the Cap
The cap is 1-2.5 cm across, occasionally to 3 cm. It starts convex, flattens out, and in age often becomes slightly depressed in the centre with a wavy or upturned margin, giving a shallow saucer shape.
Colour is white to ivory, sometimes with a faint cream or pale ochre tint at the disc and occasionally a very faint pinkish or greyish flush in old specimens. The surface is smooth and slightly greasy or lubricous when moist, but it is not glutinous: you should not be able to peel a slime layer off it or find your fingers sticky after handling. In dry weather it dries to a silky matt finish. When thoroughly wet, the margin can become faintly translucent-striate, showing the gills through the flesh, but this is a hydration effect rather than a fixed character.
Gills, Stipe and Base
The gills are the family signature. They are broadly adnate to strongly decurrent, running well down the stipe; thick, soft and rather distant, with veins sometimes connecting them near the stipe; and white, staying white or turning at most faintly cream with age. The edge is entire and the same colour as the face.
Test the texture deliberately. Rub a gill between finger and thumb: a waxcap gill smears and feels soft and greasy, like rubbing a candle, rather than shredding into fibres or crumbling. That waxy feel, combined with the decurrent attachment and the wide spacing, is what puts the collection into Cuphophyllus.
The stipe is 2-5 cm long and only 2-5 mm thick, cylindrical and often tapering downwards and curving where it grows through moss. It is white, dry to the touch along its whole length, smooth or very finely fibrillose, sometimes with a faint bloom at the apex, and becomes hollow or loosely stuffed with age. There is no ring and no volva.
The base tapers to a fine point rather than swelling into a bulb, and is bound to soil and moss by white mycelium. Check it carefully for two things: that it is not viscid, since some closely related white species have a slimy stipe, and that it has no sheath or sac.
Flesh, Colour Change and Odour
The flesh is white, thin, soft and unchanging. Slice a specimen lengthwise and leave it several minutes: there should be no yellowing, no browning at the stipe base, and no reddening.
The odour is the diagnostic character and it deserves a proper method. Crush a piece of the stipe base or the cap flesh firmly between finger and thumb, cup your hands, and smell into them after a few seconds. The scent is warm, woody and aromatic, and the classic comparisons are cedarwood, freshly sharpened pencil shavings and sandalwood; the species epithet refers instead to russet leather, which is the same warm aromatic family. It is usually much clearer after specimens have been sitting in a closed box for a few minutes, and it strengthens as they begin to dry.
Two practical notes. Perception of this scent varies from person to person, so a second nose is useful, and a single specimen may be weakly scented while its neighbours are strong, so test several.
Taking a Spore Print
The print is white. Because the caps are small and thin-fleshed, a single specimen may deposit almost nothing visible, so cut the stipes off flush and arrange three or four caps together, gills down, on card that is half white and half dark. Cover with a beaker to hold humidity, leave for two to six hours, then scrape the deposit into a heap with a blade before judging the colour.
A white print rules out the pink-spored grassland genera such as Entoloma and Clitopilus immediately, which matters because both occur in exactly this habitat.
Under the microscope the spores are smooth, colourless, broadly ellipsoid, roughly 6-9 by 4-5.5 micrometres, and not amyloid. The confirmation of the genus comes from the gill tissue: Cuphophyllus has an interwoven, irregular gill trama rather than the regular parallel arrangement of Hygrocybe in the strict sense.
Habitat and Season
Unimproved grassland is not just where it grows, it is part of the identification. This species belongs to the waxcap grassland community, which depends on decades of continuous low-input management: grazing or mowing with removal, no fertiliser, no ploughing and no reseeding. It also occurs in stable dune grassland and mountain turf, and rarely on poor soil at the edges of open woodland.
The main season is autumn, from September into December, with the peak usually in October and November after the first substantial rains have followed a mild spell. In oceanic climates fruiting can continue through mild winters and occasionally begins in late summer.
Because the community as a whole is a strong indicator of long-undisturbed grassland, finding this species usually means you are standing on ground of considerable ecological interest.
Separating the Look-alikes on Morphology
Cuphophyllus virgineus, the Snowy Waxcap, is the one that matters. It shares the pure white colour, the decurrent thick waxy gills and the white print, and the two grow together. It is generally larger and stouter, with a cap 2-5 cm across and a thicker stipe, and it has at most a faint or indistinct smell rather than the warm cedarwood scent. On small specimens the smell is genuinely the deciding character, so test the odour before measuring anything else. The variety fuscescens develops brownish stains on cap and stipe with age, which the Cedarwood Waxcap does not.
Cuphophyllus pratensis in its palest forms is far larger and fleshier, with an apricot to buff tone and a thick tapering stipe.
Camarophyllopsis species grow in the same turf but are dull greyish to brownish, with a dry matt cap and more crowded, less obviously waxy gills.
Small white Clitocybe of the rivulosa group are the most frequent confusion outside the waxcap genus. Their gills are thin, crowded and not waxy at all, tearing rather than smearing when rubbed; the cap surface is dry and often shows a frosted bloom or faint concentric zoning as it dries; and the smell is mealy or farinaceous, quite unlike cedarwood.
Clitopilus prunulus has decurrent gills too, but they flush pink with age, the spore print is pink, and the smell is strongly mealy.
Mycena and Marasmius species in grassland have cartilaginous, wiry stipes and thin, non-waxy, adnate gills that never run down the stem.
Woodland Hygrophorus species also have waxy decurrent gills, but they are considerably larger, fleshier, usually viscid, and grow in mycorrhizal association with trees rather than in open turf.
