Chestnut Dapperling

A small woodland dapperling whose pale cap is broken into fine, dark chestnut-brown granular scales arranged in rough concentric rings, on a slender stem sheathed with the same rusty scaling below a vanishing ring.
Overview
Lepiota castanea is a compact, richly coloured member of the dapperling genus, distinguished by the deep chestnut to rust-brown tone of its cap scaling. Where many small Lepiota species are pale and delicately marked, this one looks dark and warm-toned even from a distance, the scales dense enough at the centre to form an unbroken brown disc.
The genus Lepiota sits in the Agaricaceae, and its members share free gills, a white spore print, and a cap cuticle that fragments into scales as the cap expands. Microscopically, L. castanea belongs to a group with spurred or bullet-shaped spores, projecting at one end rather than being simple ellipsoids - a feature used to confirm identification alongside the distinctive scale colour.
It is a small, easily overlooked fungus of shaded woodland floors, appearing singly or in scattered handfuls along paths and in leaf drifts. Its size, colour and fine granular scaling make it one of the more recognisable of a notoriously difficult group.
How to identify it
Cap
2-5 cm across, convex when young, then flattening to a shallow dome with a low broad umbo. The centre is a solid dark chestnut to rusty-brown disc; outward from it the cuticle breaks into small, fine, granular to slightly fibrillose scales of the same rich brown, arranged in loose concentric rings over a cream to pale ochre ground. The margin is thin, sometimes fringed with fine veil remnants, and often splits slightly in dry weather.
Gills
Free from the stem, crowded, narrow, white to cream at first and often acquiring a pale ochre or faintly pinkish tone with age. Gill edges are minutely fringed.
Stipe
2-6 cm tall and only 3-6 mm thick, slender, cylindrical, hollow, whitish and smooth above and sheathed below in fine chestnut-brown fibrils and scales matching the cap. The partial veil is thin and fugitive, leaving only a faint fibrillose ring zone rather than a persistent membranous ring; on many specimens even that has disappeared.
Flesh & spore print
Flesh thin, whitish, sometimes discolouring reddish-brown in the stem base with age. The spore print is white, and the spores are small and distinctly spurred, with a projecting point at one end - a microscopic character shared with a small group of related dapperlings.
Where and when it grows
The Chestnut Dapperling grows on humus-rich soil and leaf litter in damp woodland, most often under broadleaf trees such as beech, oak, hazel and ash, though it also occurs in mixed and conifer stands and occasionally in parks, shrubberies and well-mulched gardens. It favours shaded, sheltered ground along path edges, banks and ditches where litter accumulates and stays moist.
It is widespread across temperate Europe and reported from North America and parts of Asia. Fruiting runs from late summer through autumn, generally in small scattered troops rather than clusters, and its small dark cap can be very difficult to see against a brown leaf background.
Ecological role
This is a saprotrophic litter decomposer with no mycorrhizal association. Its mycelium spreads through the layer of partially decayed leaves and fine woody debris on the woodland floor, digesting cellulose and lignin and converting fallen material into humus. Colonies are usually small, exploiting local pockets of well-rotted litter.
By processing leaf fall alongside numerous other litter fungi, it contributes to the nutrient cycle that returns minerals to the soil for the surrounding trees to take up. The fugitive veil and slight stature suggest a fungus that invests little in protective tissue, fruiting quickly in humid shaded conditions and dispersing its white spores before the litter dries out.
Similar species
Lepiota cristata is similar in size but its scales are paler reddish-brown, flatter and sparser on a whiter cap, and its stem is nearly smooth rather than sheathed in brown scaling. Lepiota felina has darker, blackish-brown scales on a distinctly white ground and a better-formed ring with a dark edge.
Lepiota magnispora and L. clypeolaria are larger, with coarse woolly rather than granular scaling and conspicuously shaggy stems. Small Cystolepiota species differ in their powdery, mealy cap surface, while young Conocybe and Pholiotina species can look superficially similar but drop rusty-brown spore prints instead of white ones.
