Field recognition of Suillus americanus, the slender yellow slippery bolete tied to eastern white pine, read through its cottony veil-fringed cap margin, radial yellow pores and dotted stem.
The First Impression
The setting comes first with this one. You are under eastern white pine — the soft, five-needled kind, in a plantation, a hedgerow line or a mossy old stand — and scattered through the needle duff are dozens of small, flat, egg-yellow caps, slick and shiny after rain, sometimes so numerous they look sown. Everything about them is slender: thin caps, thin stems, a light build quite unlike the stout boletes of the oak woods. The yellow is not lemon or mustard but a soft golden-yellow, usually broken up by rusty to cinnamon streaks and patches. Suillus americanus is a gregarious fungus and a habitat specialist, and the tree overhead is a large part of the identification.
Reading the Cap
Size and shape. Typically 3 to 10 cm across. Broadly convex when young, quickly flattening, often with a low central bump, and frequently becoming a little irregular or wavy in age.
Surface. Viscid to genuinely glutinous when moist, drying to a shiny, tacky varnish. Pine needles and litter stick to it. Over the yellow ground colour are appressed reddish-brown, cinnamon or ochre fibrils, streaks and small flattened patches, densest towards the centre and often forming vague radial lines.
Colour. Bright golden-yellow to dull ochre-yellow, aged specimens dulling towards tan.
The margin. Look here carefully, because it is one of the best characters. The cap edge carries a hanging, cottony, whitish to pale yellow fringe of partial-veil tissue, ragged and often rolled underneath. It may wear away in old or rain-battered specimens, but in fresh ones it is obvious and gives the rim a soft, bearded look.
The Pore Surface
Turn the cap over. The tubes are shallow and the pores are large by bolete standards, distinctly angular, and arranged in radial rows running outwards from the stem — an elongated, honeycomb-and-spoke pattern rather than a fine even mesh. That radial arrangement is characteristic of the group.
Colour is yellow to golden-yellow, becoming deeper ochre-yellow or dingy with age. The tubes are adnate to shortly decurrent, running a little way down the stem apex. Press them: they bruise slowly to cinnamon, dull reddish-brown or dark brown, and old bruises look like dirty fingerprints on the surface.
The Stipe and Base
The stem is 3 to 8 cm long and only 4 to 12 mm thick, which is proportionally slim for the size of the cap, more or less equal or tapering slightly downwards, and often bent or curved where it has pushed through moss.
Colour and ornament. Yellow overall, ageing brownish, and covered — especially in the upper half — with small reddish-brown to cinnamon glandular dots and smears. These dots are raised, sticky clusters of coloured cells; they darken with age and handling, so that an old stem can look dirty brown and smudged. A hand lens makes them obvious.
Ring. There is no persistent membranous ring. At most there is a faint fibrillose zone or a smear of veil remnants near the top of the stem, and often nothing at all.
Base. Tapered, with yellow to yellowish basal mycelium binding needles and moss. No bulb, no sac, no rooting tail.
Flesh and Colour Change
Slice the fruiting body in half from cap to stem base. The flesh is soft, thin and pale yellow throughout, deeper yellow in the stem. Watch the cut face for two or three minutes: it slowly stains pinkish, vinaceous or reddish-brown, particularly in the stem, before dulling to brown. The change is gradual rather than instantaneous, and it is never blue. The odour is mild.
Taking a Spore Print
Cut the stem off flush with the tubes, set the cap pore-side down on white paper, cover it with a bowl and leave it four to eight hours. Slimy caps can wick moisture into the paper, so a piece of foil under the edge helps.
The deposit is cinnamon-brown to dull olive-brown or snuff-brown — a warm earthy brown, quite unlike the pale yellow of Gyroporus or the pinkish tones of Tylopilus. Under the microscope the spores are smooth, narrowly ellipsoid to almost cylindrical, roughly 8 to 11 by 3 to 4 micrometres, and pale ochre.
Substrate and Season
Suillus americanus is one of the most tightly host-restricted boletes in eastern North America: it forms mycorrhizas essentially only with eastern white pine, Pinus strobus, and closely related five-needled pines. Find the tree and you have the possibility of the fungus; without it, look elsewhere. It fruits in needle litter, moss, grass and lawn edges wherever those pines are planted, from midsummer through autumn, typically in large scattered troops after rain. Similar species replace it with other five-needled pines in other regions.
Separating It From Look-Alikes on Morphology Alone
Suillus granulatus and relatives. Share the glandular-dotted stem, but the cap is buff, cinnamon or pale brown rather than golden-yellow, there is no cottony veil fringe on the cap margin, the pores are whitish then pale yellow and finer, and the association is with two- and three-needle pines.
Suillus luteus. Immediately different: a large, dark chocolate to purple-brown viscid cap and a conspicuous, persistent membranous ring on the stem, which Suillus americanus never has.
Suillus placidus. Also a white pine associate, but the cap is whitish to pale ivory, ageing lilac-tinted or yellowish, with no yellow ground colour and no veil fringe on the margin. Its stem dots start pale and darken to vinaceous.
Suillus spraguei, the painted Suillus. Another white pine partner, but unmistakable in the field: a dry, densely red to maroon woolly-scaly cap over yellow flesh, and a fibrillose ring. Dry and shaggy versus slimy and smooth-fibrillose.
Suillus sibiricus and Suillus subaureus. The closest morphological matches. Suillus sibiricus is essentially the western counterpart on other five-needled pines, with a duller, often more olive-tinted yellow cap. Suillus subaureus is a stouter, deeper yellow fungus that largely lacks conspicuous glandular dots and turns up in hardwood-dominated ground.
Non-Suillus boletes. Anything with a dry cap, a solid pale stem lacking glandular dots, or a spore print in yellow, pink or white is outside this group entirely.
A Field Sequence That Works
- Look up: five-needled white pine overhead is close to a prerequisite.
- Confirm a slimy, golden-yellow cap streaked with reddish-brown fibrils.
- Check the cap margin for a cottony, hanging veil fringe.
- Confirm large, angular, radially arranged yellow pores that bruise brown.
- Hand-lens the stem for reddish-brown glandular dots and confirm no true ring.
- Cut the flesh and watch for a slow pinkish to brownish stain, never blue.
- Take a print and confirm cinnamon to dull olive-brown.
