Overview

The Cinnabar Chanterelle is one of the most instantly recognisable members of the genus Cantharellus, a group defined not by true blade-like gills but by shallow, blunt, forking ridges that run down the stalk. Where most chanterelles are painted in yolk-yellow and apricot-orange, this species is a saturated cinnabar red to pinkish-red, a colour that runs through the cap, the ridges and the stalk alike.

It belongs to the family Cantharellaceae, a lineage that sits well away from the ordinary gilled mushrooms in the fungal tree of life. Members of this family build their spore-bearing surface as a folded, wrinkled or nearly smooth sheet rather than as thin plates, and their fruit bodies are typically fleshy-fibrous rather than brittle. The Cinnabar Chanterelle is small even by the standards of the genus, rarely exceeding the width of a coin, and it is easily overlooked among fallen oak leaves until a scatter of red dots resolves out of the litter.

In North American mycology it is treated as a classic indicator of mature oak woodland. Recent molecular work has shown that what was once called Cantharellus cinnabarinus across a wide area is a small complex of closely related red chanterelles, with the true species centred on eastern North America and relatives described from Central America and elsewhere.

How to identify it

Cap

The cap is 1–4 cm across, occasionally reaching 5 cm. It begins convex with a strongly inrolled margin, then flattens and finally becomes shallowly depressed or vase-like at the centre. The surface is dry and smooth to very finely felted, coloured a bright cinnabar red to pinkish-orange, fading toward salmon or pale pink in sun-bleached or ageing specimens. The margin is typically wavy and irregularly lobed.

Gills

The underside carries false gills: narrow, blunt-edged, wax-like ridges that fork repeatedly and are linked by low cross-veins. They run down onto the stalk (decurrent) and are coloured much like the cap, pinkish-red to pale pinkish-orange, usually a shade paler than the upper surface.

Stipe

The stalk is 2–4 cm long and 3–10 mm thick, solid rather than hollow, often narrowing downward and frequently curved. It matches the cap in colour or is slightly paler and more orange toward the base.

Flesh & spore print

The flesh is white to faintly pinkish, firm and somewhat fibrous, and does not change colour appreciably when cut. The odour is mild and faintly fruity. The spore print is pinkish-cream to pale pink, an unusual feature that separates it from most other small red woodland mushrooms.

Where and when it grows

This species grows on soil in hardwood and mixed forest, almost always where oaks are present, and often on well-drained slopes, along woodland trails and in the mossy margins of paths. Fruit bodies emerge singly, scattered or in loose troops, and are frequently found alongside other small chanterelles in the same patch of litter.

It is a warm-season fungus, fruiting from early summer through to early autumn and responding quickly to summer thunderstorms. Its recorded range covers eastern North America from the Gulf states north into southern Canada and west to the Great Plains, with closely allied red chanterelles reported from Mexico and Central America.

Ecological role

Like other chanterelles, this is an ectomycorrhizal fungus. Its mycelium sheathes the fine feeding roots of oaks and related hardwoods, forming a mantle and an internal network between root cells through which the fungus supplies the tree with water, nitrogen and phosphorus mined from the litter layer, receiving sugars from photosynthesis in return.

Because the partnership is obligate, the fungus cannot be grown apart from a living host, and fruiting patches tend to persist in the same spot for many years as long as the associated trees remain. The dense mycelial networks also bind soil particles and contribute to nutrient cycling in oak woodland.

Similar species

The much larger Golden Chanterelle (Cantharellus cibarius) shares the forking false gills but is egg-yolk yellow to orange throughout and several times the size, with thick white flesh. The Small Chanterelle (Cantharellus minor) matches it in stature but is yellow-orange rather than red and gives a pale yellowish spore print. Flame-coloured Chanterelle (Craterellus ignicolor) is orange to orange-brown with a hollow stalk, whereas the Cinnabar Chanterelle keeps a solid stalk.

Among unrelated small red mushrooms, the waxcap Hygrocybe cantharellus is the closest mimic: it is also red with decurrent yellow-orange folds, but its underside carries genuine thin, blade-like gills that can be separated with a fingernail, and its flesh is waxy and brittle rather than fibrous.

Common questions about Cinnabar Chanterelle

How can I tell this is a chanterelle and not a true gilled mushroom?
Look closely at the underside. Chanterelles have blunt, rounded, wax-like ridges that fork and are joined by cross-veins, and they cannot be peeled cleanly away from the cap flesh. A true gilled mushroom has thin, knife-edged plates that separate easily.
Does the red colour ever fade?
Yes. Specimens exposed to strong sun, heavy rain or advanced age fade from cinnabar red toward salmon, pale pink or almost buff, particularly at the cap centre. The ridges usually retain more pink than the cap surface.
What trees should I look under?
Oaks above all. It also appears in mixed hardwood stands containing hickory, beech and maple, but oaks are the consistent partner across its range.
Why does it always come back to the same spot?
The fungus lives as a perennial mycorrhizal network wrapped around tree roots. The fruit bodies are only the seasonal reproductive stage, so as long as the host trees and soil remain undisturbed, the same patch can produce fruit bodies for decades.
