Cleft-foot Amanita Identification Guide

A step-by-step field routine for Amanita brunnescens, the sombre brown eastern woodland species named for its split basal bulb. Covers the veil patches, the slow brown staining, the amyloid spores and its nearest relatives.

The Woods You Are Standing In

Almost every encounter with the Cleft-foot Amanita happens in eastern North American hardwood forest between midsummer and mid-autumn. Oak is the classic partner, often with beech, hickory and maple, and the species is equally at home in mixed stands where hemlock or pine has crept in. You find it singly or scattered rather than in troops, pushing up through leaf litter on slopes, along trail cuttings and on the raised ground beside old logging roads. The first impression is deliberately unexciting: a medium-sized, dark brown, slightly shiny mushroom with a white stalk and a white ring, the sort of thing that looks like half a dozen other species until you deal with the base. The whole identification of this species turns on excavation and patience.

Reading the Cap

The cap runs 4-11 cm across, occasionally to 14, hemispherical at first, then broadly convex and finally almost flat with a low broad umbo. Colour is a sober greyish brown, olive-brown or milk-chocolate, typically darkest over the centre and paling toward the margin, and the surface carries fine innate radial streaking that shows best in raking light. In wet weather it is distinctly viscid and shines; in dry weather it feels merely tacky and then dry. Scattered over the disc you will usually find a few thin, whitish to pale grey, felted patches, the remains of the universal veil. These are patches rather than pyramidal warts, they are easily washed off by rain, and a specimen without any is perfectly normal. Check the margin closely: it is even and not striate, or at most obscurely so in very old caps, and that negative character rules out a whole section of the genus. A pale to whitish form exists and behaves identically in every other respect.

The Gills

Gills are free from the stalk or narrowly attached along a fine line, crowded, moderately broad, and white to faintly cream. With a lens the edges look minutely floccose or fringed rather than clean-cut. Short gills are interspersed among the full-length ones and end abruptly rather than tapering. In older specimens, and wherever an insect has tunnelled through, the gill tissue discolours to a dull brown, which is your first hint of the staining reaction that names the species.

Stipe, Ring and the Cleft Base

The stalk is white, 6-14 cm long and 1-2 cm thick, tapering gently upward from a swollen base, with a silky to slightly floccose or finely scurfy surface. A membranous white ring hangs high on the stalk, skirt-like and often collapsing against the stem or tearing away entirely in wet weather. Handle the stalk and it slowly dulls to brownish where your fingers were.

Now the important part. Do not pull the mushroom up; dig it out with a knife or your fingers so the base comes away whole. The base swells into an abrupt, marginate bulb, often as broad as it is long, and in typical material that bulb is split by one or more vertical clefts running down its side, as though someone had drawn a blade partway through it. This cleft foot is the species name made visible. The rim of the bulb frequently forms a low collar or narrow free margin of volval tissue pressed against the bulb, but there is no loose sack-like volva. In heavy clay soils the bulb can be turnip-shaped and the clefts shallow, so read it alongside the other characters rather than as an absolute requirement.

Flesh and Colour Change

Cut the whole mushroom lengthwise and set it aside while you look at something else. The flesh is white and firm at first. Over ten to thirty minutes it develops a slow reddish-brown to vinaceous-brown stain, strongest in the bulb and lower stalk, weaker in the cap. Bruised surfaces on the stalk and gills go the same way. This gradual browning, combined with the split bulb, is the diagnostic pairing that carries the identification, so give the cut section time to work rather than glancing at it once and moving on.

Taking a Spore Print

Cut the cap free and lay it gills-down on a card that is half black and half white, or on a glass slide, cover it with a cup to keep the air still, and leave it two to six hours. The print is white. If you have Melzer reagent, mount a scrape of the print and watch for a grey-blue reaction: the spores are amyloid, which places the species firmly in section Validae along with the other bulbous, patch-capped, non-striate amanitas. The spores themselves are globose to broadly subglobose, roughly 7.5-9.5 micrometres, smooth, colourless and thin-walled.

Habitat, Partners and Season

This is an ectomycorrhizal species, so it grows on soil in partnership with tree roots and never on wood, wood chips or dung. Oak and beech are the strongest associations, but records under hemlock, pine and mixed stands are common. It is widespread and often abundant through eastern North America from the Gulf states north into Canada and west to the edge of the Great Plains, fruiting from June through October, peaking in warm, humid spells a few days after heavy rain. Repeat visits to the same slope in the same week often turn up specimens at every stage from egg to collapsed.

Separating It from Look-Alikes

Amanita citrina is the closest structural match: bulbous, patch-capped, ring-bearing, amyloid-spored and non-striate. It differs in its pale yellow to greenish-yellow cap tints, its thicker buff veil patches, a bulb whose rim is a clean rounded margin rather than a split one, an absence of the slow brown staining, and a distinct raw-potato odour when the base is cut. Amanita porphyria has a grey to purplish-brown cap, a grey rather than pure white ring, and a marginate but uncleft bulb. Amanita rubescens stains pink to reddish rather than brown, has warty grey-pink cap ornamentation, and swells into a rooting club rather than an abrupt marginate bulb. Amanita phalloides has a greenish to yellowish cap with a metallic sheen and, crucially, a loose membranous sack around the base that stands free of the stalk; it does not brown. The all-white destroying angels have the same sack-like volva and no bulb clefts at all. Grisettes in section Vaginatae are ringless with a strongly grooved cap margin. Finally, Volvopluteus and Volvariella species have a sack volva, no ring, and drop a pink spore print, which the print test settles in a couple of hours.

A Working Sequence

Dark brown viscid cap with a few thin white patches, unstriate margin, free white gills, white skirt-like ring, abrupt bulb with a vertical split, slow brown stain on cut and handled surfaces, white amyloid spores, hardwood soil in summer or autumn. Common questions

What exactly is the cleft foot, and is it always present?
It is a vertical split, sometimes two or three, running down the side of the swollen basal bulb, as if the bulb had been part-sliced with a knife. It is usually obvious in well-grown specimens dug out intact, but it can be shallow or nearly absent in compacted soil, so pair it with the slow brown staining and the marginate bulb rim rather than treating it as an absolute requirement.
How long does the brown staining take to appear?
Longer than most people wait. Cut the mushroom lengthwise and leave the section exposed for ten to thirty minutes. The stain develops first and most strongly in the bulb and lower stalk, spreading as a dull reddish-brown to vinaceous-brown discolouration. Handled stalk surfaces and insect-damaged gill tissue show the same reaction over a similar timeframe.
Where and when does the Cleft-foot Amanita fruit?
It is a common eastern North American species of hardwood and mixed forest, most often with oak and beech but also under hemlock and pine, fruiting from soil and litter between June and October. It appears a few days after warm, heavy rain, typically scattered or solitary on slopes, road banks and trail edges rather than in large troops.
Does it grow on wood or only from the ground?
Only from the ground. It is ectomycorrhizal, forming a sheath around living tree rootlets and trading soil nutrients for tree sugars, so it always emerges from soil or leaf litter near a partner tree. A superficially similar mushroom fruiting directly on a log, stump or wood-chip bed is something else entirely and should be reconsidered from the start.
