Clouded Funnel Identification Guide

A field walkthrough for Clitocybe nebularis, the big grey late-autumn troop-former of leaf litter. Covers the clouded bloomed cap, the crowded gills that peel from the flesh, the club-based stipe, the creamy spore print and the pale look-alikes worth ruling out.

The First Impression

Clouded Funnel announces itself by mass rather than by detail. It is a late-season fungus, often the last big flush of the year, and the classic encounter is on a raw, still November afternoon in a wood that has already dropped most of its leaves. Across the litter, in a long arc or a broad ring curving away between the trunks, stand dozens of large, solid, pale grey mushrooms, many of them shouldering leaves and twigs up on their caps. They are chunky enough to notice from thirty paces, and the colony habit is part of the identification: this species almost always fruits in troops, arcs and rings, rarely as scattered singletons.

Get close and the second impression is the surface bloom. The cap is not a clean grey but a clouded, smoky grey-brown that looks as though it has been dusted with fine flour or breathed on, especially in dry weather. That soft bloomed finish over a grey ground is what the common name is describing, and it is genuinely useful once you have your eye in.

Reading the Cap

Measure it. Mature caps run 6-20 cm across and occasionally larger, which puts the species firmly in the big-mushroom category for a litter-dwelling gilled fungus. Young caps are strongly convex with a tightly inrolled margin, so tightly that the edge can look rolled under like a hem. With age the cap flattens and then becomes shallowly depressed towards the centre, giving the loose funnel shape of the name, though it never forms the deep clean funnel of some relatives. Many mature specimens keep a very low, broad umbo in the middle of an otherwise flat cap.

Colour ranges from pale ash-grey through grey-brown to a warmer buff-grey, always paler towards the margin and usually darker in the centre. In wet weather the bloom washes off and the surface becomes smooth and slightly greasy, darkening noticeably; wet caps of this species can look far browner than the field guides suggest, so judge colour from several specimens. The flesh is thick and firm at the centre, thinning towards the edge, and the cap does not tear easily.

Reading the Gills

Turn a cap over and look along the gill edges with the light behind them. The gills are white to cream, sometimes ageing to a dull yellowish-buff, and they are notably crowded and narrow for such a large mushroom. Attachment is adnate to shortly decurrent: they meet the stipe and run a short distance down it, but they do not sweep far down as in a true deep funnel species.

Now do the peel test. Push a thumb sideways along the gill faces near the margin. In this species the gill layer separates cleanly from the cap flesh and can be pushed off as a sheet, a behaviour shared by only a handful of genera and one that helps confirm the identification when combined with everything else. Also check the gill edges: they are even and entire, not serrated or fringed.

Reading the Stipe and Base

The stipe is stout, 5-12 cm long and 1.5-4 cm thick, whitish to pale grey and finely fibrillose along its length. There is no ring and no volva. The defining feature is the base, which swells into a distinct club, sometimes almost a rounded bulb, and this swollen base is usually matted with white mycelial felt binding leaf litter, twigs and soil crumbs into a solid plug. Lift the whole fruit body rather than snapping it and you will pull up a lump of litter cemented to the base, which is itself a clue to how the fungus feeds.

Split the stipe lengthwise. The flesh is white and firm when young, becoming softer and spongy or slightly hollowed in the centre with age. Nothing changes colour on cutting, and there is no latex. Old specimens can develop faint yellowish or brownish water-stains in the base, but a sharp colour reaction is a sign you are elsewhere.

Odour

Crush a piece of cap flesh between finger and thumb and smell it. Clouded Funnel has a strong and rather memorable odour, usually described as heavy and sweetish with a mealy or slightly sour edge, becoming stale and unpleasant in older specimens. It is not subtle; if a big grey litter mushroom smells of essentially nothing, question the identification.

Taking a Spore Print

Cut the cap free and lay it gills down, half on white paper and half on black or on glass, cover with a bowl and leave it for four to eight hours. A cap this size drops heavily and you will usually have a thick deposit within a few hours. The print is pale cream to buff with a faint pinkish-cream cast in a thick deposit, never chalk white and never a clear pink or rusty brown.

This print is the single most valuable confirmation you can make, because the most important morphological comparisons in this group hinge on spore colour. Read it on white paper in daylight, and scrape the deposit into a small heap with a knife tip before judging the colour; thin scattered deposits always look paler than they are. Under a microscope the spores are small, smooth and ellipsoid.

Substrate, Season and Company

This is a litter decomposer, not a wood-rotter and not a mycorrhizal partner. It works through deep accumulations of fallen leaves and needles, which is why it fruits so often along the base of hedges, in the deep litter of beech and oak, in mixed and coniferous plantations, and in parkland, churchyards and large gardens. Fruiting is late: chiefly October to early December in temperate regions, frequently continuing after the first frosts have finished most other species.

One ecological detail is worth actively hunting for. A small pale mushroom with a distinct sac-like volva at its base and pink gills sometimes grows directly out of decaying Clouded Funnel caps - the Piggyback Rosegill, Volvariella surrecta, a parasite that appears on essentially no other host. Finding it on your specimen is close to a confirmation of the host identification.

Separating It from Look-alikes

Livid Pinkgill, Entoloma sinuatum. The critical comparison. It is a similarly large, pale, firm, litter-dwelling mushroom with a smooth ivory to grey-buff cap. Separate it on gills and print: its gills start pale yellowish and turn a definite salmon-pink with maturity, and its spore print is pink. Its stipe is solid and not club-swollen at the base, its gills are more widely spaced and sinuate rather than shortly decurrent, and its cap surface is silky-shiny rather than bloomed.

Giant Funnel, Leucopaxillus giganteus. Larger still, distinctly whiter and cream rather than smoky grey, forming a deep true funnel with strongly decurrent gills, and growing in rings in grassland and wood margins rather than in deep woodland litter. Its flesh is tougher and its print white.

Wood Blewit, Lepista nuda, and Field Blewit, L. saeva. Both share the late season, the ring-forming habit and the crowded gills, but both show lilac to violet tones somewhere - in the gills and cap for Wood Blewit, in the stipe for Field Blewit - and both give a pale dirty pink spore print rather than cream.

The Miller, Clitopilus prunulus. Much smaller, pure white with a felted matt cap, deeply decurrent gills and a pink spore print.

Tricholoma species. Several greyish Tricholoma grow in the same woods, but they have sinuate, notched gill attachment, no swollen club base with a litter plug, a white print and a solid fibrous stipe, and they are mycorrhizal, so they appear under specific trees rather than wherever litter happens to be deep.

What are the three characters I should always check on a suspected Clouded Funnel?

In the field also compare the stipe base, which is clubbed and litter-bound in Clouded Funnel but solid and even in Entoloma, and the cap surface, bloomed and clouded rather than silky and shining.
Where and when does it fruit?
It is a litter decomposer of deep leaf and needle accumulations in deciduous, mixed and coniferous woodland, hedge bases, plantations, parkland and large gardens. Fruiting is late in the season, mainly from October into early December in temperate regions, often continuing past the first frosts when most other larger species have finished.
Why does it grow in rings and arcs?
The mycelium spreads outward through the litter layer as a continuous expanding front, exhausting the leaf material behind it, so fruit bodies form along the actively feeding edge and trace it as an arc or ring. Watch too for the Piggyback Rosegill, Volvariella surrecta, a parasite that fruits from decaying Clouded Funnel caps and grows on virtually no other host.
