A grey-brown woodland funnel identified at a glance by its markedly swollen, club-shaped stipe base and deeply decurrent creamy-yellow gills.
Overview
Club Foot takes both its English and scientific names from the shape of its stipe, which swells dramatically towards the base into a soft, bulbous club that is often wider than the cap is deep. No other common temperate funnel has such an exaggerated basal swelling, making the species one of the easier grey funnels to name.
It was long placed in Clitocybe as C. clavipes, but microscopic and molecular study showed it stands apart from the true funnels, and it was moved to its own genus Ampulloclitocybe, whose name refers to the flask or ampulla shape of the stipe.
Beyond the swollen base, the species is recognised by its greyish-brown, slightly greasy cap and by gills that are unusually pale creamy-yellow and run far down the stipe, giving young specimens a distinctly two-toned look.
How to identify it
Cap
The cap is 4-8 cm across, convex with a low central umbo when young, later flattening and becoming shallowly depressed while frequently keeping a small central bump. The surface is smooth, slightly greasy when damp and matt when dry, coloured grey-brown, olive-brown or sooty fawn, usually darkest at the centre and paling towards a thin incurved margin.
Gills
The gills are moderately crowded, fairly broad and deeply decurrent, descending well down the stipe. They are white at first but soon take on a distinctive creamy-yellow to pale ivory-yellow tone that contrasts with the dull grey-brown cap.
Stipe
The stipe is 4-8 cm long, narrow at the apex at 8-15 mm and swelling markedly downwards to a soft bulbous club that may reach 2-3 cm across at the base. It is grey-brown, paler than the cap, finely fibrillose, and spongy or water-soaked in texture; the base is matted with white mycelium and needle litter. There is no ring and no volva.
Flesh and spore print
The flesh is soft, watery and whitish to pale grey, unchanging when cut, with a sweetish smell sometimes likened to orange blossom or fruit. The spore print is white and the spores are smooth and elliptical.
Where and when it grows
Club Foot grows on the ground in litter, most typically in conifer plantations under pine, spruce and larch, but it is also frequent in beech woodland and mixed woods on both acid and neutral soils. It favours shaded ground with a deep, damp needle or leaf layer.
Fruiting takes place through autumn, usually a little later than the summer funnels, and the fruit bodies come up singly or in small scattered groups rather than large troops. The species is widespread and common across Europe, temperate Asia and North America.
Ecological role
Ampulloclitocybe clavipes is a saprotroph of the litter layer, decomposing fallen needles, leaves and fine woody debris. The bulbous stipe base is heavily infiltrated with water and mycelial tissue and acts as an anchor in loose duff, where it binds needles into a firm plug.
Its distribution follows litter accumulation rather than any particular root partner, so it appears reliably in maturing conifer plantations once a substantial duff layer has formed, and it can persist in the same patch of woodland floor for many seasons as the mycelium works through successive years of needle fall.
Similar species
Clitocybe nebularis, the Clouded Funnel, is much larger and paler with a bloomed cloudy-grey cap, gills that are only shortly decurrent and remain whitish-cream, and a stouter stipe that is thickened but not sharply club-shaped. Infundibulicybe gibba is thinner-fleshed, pinkish-tan, has pure white gills and an even, unswollen stipe.
Paralepista flaccida is rusty orange-brown with far more crowded gills. Grey-brown Tricholoma species such as T. terreum have sinuate, notched gills that stop abruptly at the stipe rather than running down it, and a straight, non-swollen stipe. The combination of a soft club-shaped base, deeply decurrent creamy-yellow gills and a white spore print is diagnostic.
