A brittlestem that grows in tight bouquets of dozens of slender stems fused at a common base, each carrying a small conical tan cap. The stems are white, hollow and snap cleanly.
Overview
Clustered Brittlestem, Psathyrella multipedata, belongs to the large genus Psathyrella in the Psathyrellaceae — a family of small, fragile, dark-spored gilled fungi that also contains the inky caps. Brittlestems get their name from the stipe, which is thin-walled, hollow and so brittle that it fractures rather than bends.
What sets this species apart from the many drab brown Psathyrella species is its habit. Rather than growing scattered or in loose groups, it forms remarkably dense tufts — commonly twenty to fifty fruiting bodies, sometimes more — whose stems converge into a single narrow rooting base, so the whole cluster can be lifted out as one bundle.
Combined with the small hygrophanous cap that fades from date-brown to pale clay and the very dark spore deposit, the caespitose, fasciculate habit makes this one of the more identifiable brittlestems in the field.
How to identify it
Cap
1-3 cm across, conical to bell-shaped when young, expanding to broadly convex with a low umbo and often a faintly wavy or split margin. Hygrophanous: date-brown to reddish-tan when moist, drying from the centre outward to pale clay, buff or greyish. Surface smooth, sometimes with a few fine white veil fibrils on the margin when very young.
Gills
Adnate to narrowly adnexed, crowded and narrow. Pale greyish-brown at first, darkening through purplish-brown to almost black as the spores mature; the edges usually stay finely white-fringed.
Stipe
4-10 cm long but only 1-3 mm thick, straight, white to cream, silky-fibrillose, hollow and very brittle. Many stems arise from a shared, slightly rooting base so the cluster comes away as a single bundle. No ring.
Flesh and spore print
Flesh thin, watery brown in the cap and white in the stem, with no distinctive smell. Spore print dark purple-brown to blackish-brown.
Where and when it grows
It grows on the ground rather than on visible wood, typically in short grass, along woodland paths and rides, on roadside verges, in parks and gardens, and on disturbed compacted soil. Clusters are frequently near broadleaved trees and are usually attached to buried woody debris or old roots.
The species is widespread across temperate Europe and reported from North America and parts of Asia. Fruiting runs from mid-summer through to late autumn, favoured by mild damp spells, and the tufts tend to reappear in the same spot for several seasons.
Ecological role
Psathyrella multipedata is a saprotroph. Its mycelium breaks down buried woody fragments, dead roots and organic matter mixed into the upper soil, recycling lignin- and cellulose-rich residues into the soil profile. This buried substrate explains why the fruiting bodies appear to rise from bare soil or grass with no wood in sight.
Because the whole tuft develops from a single dense mycelial knot on that one piece of substrate, the stems fuse at the base and emerge together. The fruit bodies are short-lived, collapsing within a few days, and rely on rapid maturation of the dark spores, which are shed passively onto surrounding vegetation and litter.
Similar species
Psathyrella piluliformis also grows in tufts but does so directly on stumps and buried hardwood, has broader, more reddish-brown caps, and its clusters are looser with stems that do not converge into a single narrow base. Psathyrella candolleana has a paler, cream to honey cap with a toothed veil-fringed margin and grows scattered or in small groups rather than dense bouquets.
Coprinellus disseminatus forms even denser swarms but has tiny pleated grey caps and much shorter stems. Psathyrella corrugis has a comparably slender stem yet fruits singly or in twos with a reddish gill edge, never in a fused tuft.
