Coccora Identification Guide

A field walkthrough for Amanita calyptroderma, the large amber-capped western amanita with a thick white veil patch and a sack-like volva. Covers the striate margin, inamyloid spores, autumn habitat and the amanitas it sits beside.

The Forest You Are Standing In

The setting is a strong part of this identification. Coccora is a species of the Pacific coastal states, from southern British Columbia through Washington and Oregon down the length of California, and it fruits in the wet half of the year: late autumn through winter in the south, autumn in the north, with a distinct push after the first serious soaking rains. Look in mixed hardwood and conifer woodland where coast live oak, tanoak, madrone and Douglas-fir grow together on well-drained slopes. It pushes up through deep duff, often lifting a plate of packed litter on its head, and appears in loose scattered groups rather than singly.

The first impression is of size and of a warm, unmistakable colour. This is a big, solid, heavy mushroom, and the cap is a rich amber to orange-brown, glowing against the brown litter, with a striking off-white patch sitting on the middle like a cap on a cap.

Reading the Cap

The cap measures 8-25 cm across and occasionally more, starting as a firm egg wrapped in a white membrane, then breaking out convex and finally flattening to broadly convex or plane. Colour runs from deep orange-brown or amber over the disc to a paler tan, buff or straw at the margin, and the whole surface is somewhat viscid in wet weather with a slight sheen when it dries. Two cap characters carry most of the diagnostic weight. First, the veil patch: instead of many scattered warts, there is usually a single large, thick, felty to slightly leathery white or creamy patch covering much of the disc, sometimes cracked into a few big plates, and it can be peeled off in one sheet. Second, the margin: it is distinctly and evenly striate, grooved with fine radial lines for perhaps 5-15 percent of the cap radius, and you should confirm this on a well-expanded specimen in good light. That combination of a single thick patch and a lined margin is the shape of the whole identification.

The Gills

Gills are free from the stalk or only touching it at a narrow line, crowded, moderately broad, and white to pale cream, sometimes taking a faint warm buff cast in age. The edges are finely floccose under a lens. Short gills of several lengths are interspersed and end abruptly rather than tapering into the flesh. The gills do not change colour when bruised, and they never darken to grey, brown or pink.

Stipe, Ring and Volva

The stalk is stout, 8-20 cm long and 1.5-3.5 cm thick, white to cream, sometimes finely fibrillose or faintly patterned, and it tapers gently upward from a thickened base. A membranous ring hangs from the upper third; it is white to cream, often broad and skirt-like, and it has a tendency to sag, collapse or tear as the cap expands, so a specimen with only a ragged remnant is still consistent.

The base needs excavating, not pulling. Dig it out whole and you find a substantial white volva: a thick, firm, persistent sack that stands free of the stalk, with a wide free rim, often stained with soil and duff on the outside but clean and white within. This is a true sack, not a rim on a bulb and not a series of concentric rings, and its thickness and toughness are notable. Cut the whole mushroom lengthwise and the relationship becomes obvious: the volva wraps the base, the stalk sits inside it, and the tissue is several millimetres thick.

Flesh and Colour Change

The flesh is white, thick and firm in the cap, more fibrous and often hollowing or stuffed with cottony pith in the stalk. Cut a fresh specimen and watch: there is essentially no colour change, no reddening, no browning, no darkening in the base. Old or waterlogged material may discolour dully with decay, but a sound fruit body cut in half stays white, a stability worth noting alongside amanitas that stain.

Taking a Spore Print

Separate a cap, place it gills-down on a card that is half black and half white, cover it with a bowl, and leave it two to six hours; a large cap of this species prints heavily and quickly. The print is white to very faintly cream and reads best against the black half. If you have Melzer reagent, test the deposit: the spores are inamyloid, showing no blue-grey reaction, which places the species in section Caesareae rather than among the amyloid-spored bulbous amanitas. That microscopic result lines up neatly with the two macroscopic characters of the group, the striate cap margin and the sack-like volva. The spores themselves are smooth, ellipsoid and colourless, roughly 9-11 by 5.5-7 micrometres.

Habitat and Season in More Detail

Coccora is ectomycorrhizal, so it grows from soil beneath partner trees and never on wood. The strongest associations are with tanoak, coast live oak, madrone and Douglas-fir, and productive spots tend to be repeatable year after year: a particular bank, a particular ring of oaks, the same duff-filled hollow. It is a cool-weather fungus, fruiting once soil temperatures drop and the rains arrive, which in coastal California means November to February and further north means October to December. A separate spring-fruiting relative exists and is discussed below.

Separating It from Look-Alikes

Amanita vernicoccora is the closest match and the most important separation. It is essentially the springtime counterpart, fruiting from late winter into spring as the soil warms rather than in autumn, and its cap is yellow to pale yellow-buff rather than amber to orange-brown, with the same thick single patch and striate margin. Season plus cap hue does the work. Amanita velosa is a smaller spring species with a pinkish-buff to salmon-tan cap, a thin flat veil patch, a strongly striate margin, gills that often flush pinkish, and a stalk that usually lacks a ring entirely. Amanita phalloides overlaps in habitat and season under oaks but differs on every relevant character: an olive-green to yellowish-green cap with a metallic sheen, a smooth non-striate margin, a thinner and more delicate white sack, and usually no thick single patch. Amanita muscaria is red to orange but is peppered with many small scattered warts, has an only faintly lined margin at best, and sits on a firm basal bulb ringed with concentric bands of volval tissue rather than in a free sack. Amanita augusta and its relatives have yellowish flakes, an unlined margin and a bulbous base. Finally, at the button stage, any egg you find should be sliced from top to bottom: the cross-section shows the outline of the miniature mushroom inside, and the colour of the immature cap plus the thickness of the enclosing membrane will steer you between these species long before they open.

A Working Sequence

Large amber-brown cap, one thick white patch on the disc, clearly grooved margin, free white gills, membranous sagging ring, thick free-standing white sack at the base, unchanging white flesh, white inamyloid spore print, autumn or early winter under western oaks and conifers. Dig the base every time; the volva is half the answer.

Common questions

What separates Coccora from its spring-fruiting counterpart?
Season and cap colour. Amanita vernicoccora fruits from late winter into spring and has a yellow to pale yellow-buff cap, while Coccora fruits in autumn and early winter with a warm amber to orange-brown cap. Both share the thick single veil patch, the grooved margin and the sack-like volva, so a specimen without a collection date is genuinely difficult to place.
Why does the striate cap margin matter so much?
The fine radial grooves along the cap edge, together with a spore deposit that shows no blue-grey reaction in Melzer reagent, place a species in Amanita section Caesareae. Most of the bulbous, patch-capped amanitas have a smooth, unlined margin and amyloid spores. Checking the margin on a fully expanded cap therefore splits the genus in half before you look at anything else.
Where does Coccora grow, and what trees is it associated with?
It is a Pacific coastal species ranging from British Columbia to southern California, growing from soil and deep duff in mixed woodland. How do I read a specimen still in the egg stage?
Slice the egg cleanly from top to bottom with a sharp knife. The section reveals the unexpanded mushroom in outline, so you can see the colour of the immature cap, the thickness of the enclosing white membrane and the shape of the developing stalk. In this species the enclosing tissue is notably thick and firm, and the cap tissue inside is already warm amber-brown.
