Coconut Milkcap Identification Guide

A step-by-step walkthrough for Lactarius glyciosmus, the small lilac-grey milkcap of birch. Covers the scurfy cap, the white unchanging latex, the strong coconut odour, the buff spore print and the birch-associated milkcaps most likely to be confused with it.

The First Impression

Coconut Milkcap is a small, quiet mushroom that you often find with your nose as much as your eyes. The setting is birch: a damp birch wood, a birch-invaded heath, the mossy edge of a bog, a scrubby acid common, or the birch fringe of a conifer plantation, from late summer into autumn. The fruit bodies push up through moss, bilberry, damp litter or wet Sphagnum, scattered singly or in small loose groups rather than in troops.

What you see is a modest cap, 2-5 cm across, in a soft pale lilac-grey or greyish-buff with a faint pinkish or violaceous cast, dry and matt rather than shiny. It is not a colour that shouts, and in mixed company it can read as just another dull grey-brown small mushroom. The moment you pick it and hold it near your face, however, the identification usually resolves in a second, because the odour is strong, sweet and unmistakably reminiscent of dried coconut shavings.

Establishing the Genus

Before chasing the species, confirm the genus. Two checks do it.

First, snap the cap in half rather than cutting it. Milkcap flesh is brittle and granular; it breaks with a clean crumbly fracture like a piece of chalk, without any fibrous stringiness, because the flesh is packed with rounded cells rather than elongated hyphae. If the cap tears in fibres, you are not in Lactarius.

Second, damage the gills. Draw a knife blade or a fingernail across the gill faces of a fresh specimen and wait a few seconds. Droplets of latex should bead along the cut. That milk is the genus character, and Coconut Milkcap has it, although the flow is sparse, so use a fresh, well-hydrated specimen and be patient. Dry weather or an old fruit body can suppress the latex almost completely.

Reading the Cap

Caps are 2-5 cm across, occasionally to 6 cm. They start convex with an inrolled margin, then flatten and often become shallowly depressed at the centre, and a good proportion retain a small, sharp, nipple-like umbo in the middle of the depression, which is a helpful shape cue when present.

The surface texture matters. It is dry and finely scurfy, granular or minutely velvety-mealy under a lens, sometimes with faint concentric wrinkling or a slightly frosted bloom, and it is never viscid or slimy even in wet weather. Colour runs from pale lilac-grey through greyish-flesh to greyish-buff or pale drab, generally fading and becoming buffer as the cap dries and ages. The margin is often paler and slightly wavy in mature specimens, and it is not shaggy, bearded or fringed with hairs.

Reading the Gills

The gills are crowded, narrow, and pale ochre-buff, cream or pale pinkish-buff, usually a shade or two warmer and more yellowish than the cap. Attachment is adnate to slightly decurrent: they meet the stipe and run just a little way down it, so the underside of the cap looks slightly funnelled towards the middle. Short gills fork irregularly and run in between the full-length ones near the margin.

Watch the gills after cutting. In this species the white latex dries without staining them, so damage to the gill edges leaves no yellow, grey-green, brown or lilac discolouration beyond ordinary handling marks. This absence of a staining reaction is one of the most important checks in the whole identification, because several near-relatives do stain.

Reading the Stipe and Base

The stipe is slender and neat: 2-6 cm long and 4-10 mm thick, more or less cylindrical or slightly tapering downwards, smooth, dry, and coloured like the cap or a shade paler, sometimes with a faint pinkish flush. There is no ring, no volva and no distinct veil zone.

Split it lengthwise. Young stipes are stuffed with soft flesh; older ones are hollow, with a narrow tube down the middle. The flesh is white to very pale buff, brittle like the cap flesh, and it does not change colour in section beyond a slight watery darkening. The very base is often bound with white mycelial threads and moss fragments; scrape at it and you will usually find fine roots and thin acid humus rather than wood.

The Latex Test and Colour Change

This is the decisive sequence, so do it carefully on a fresh specimen.

Cut the gills and collect the latex on a white surface. In Coconut Milkcap it is white, scanty, and it stays white. Leave it exposed on a knife blade or on a piece of white paper or a plain handkerchief for ten to fifteen minutes and check again: it should still be white, or at most dried to a very faintly cream film. It must not turn yellow, must not turn lilac or violet, and must not turn grey-green.

At the same time, watch the cut flesh itself. It stays white to pale buff. A distinct colour change in the flesh, or latex that changes on the flesh but not on paper, points to other species. The white-and-unchanging result, combined with a pale lilac-grey scurfy cap and birch habitat, is close to conclusive.

Odour

Crush a piece of cap flesh, or better, put two or three fresh caps in a closed container for five minutes and then open it. The odour is strong, sweet and coconut-like, and it becomes even more pronounced as the material begins to dry. It is the reason the species is named as it is, and it is the fastest confirmatory check in the genus. Aged or waterlogged specimens can smell weaker or slightly sour, so test more than one.

Taking a Spore Print

Cut a mature cap from the stipe and lay it gills down on white paper under a cover for four to six hours. The deposit is pale cream to pale buff-ochre, often with a very slight pinkish or salmon tinge in a thick deposit. It is definitely not chalk white and not rusty brown. As always, scrape the deposit into a heap with a knife tip before judging colour; a thin scattered deposit always reads paler than it really is.

Under a microscope the spores show the pattern typical of the genus: broadly ellipsoid and ornamented with amyloid warts and ridges forming a partial network, easily seen in Melzer reagent.

Substrate, Season and Habitat

Coconut Milkcap is mycorrhizal, forming a root partnership with birch. This is the single most useful habitat fact, because it means the fungus effectively never appears out of range of a birch tree. Look on damp acid ground: birch woods, wet heaths, moorland edges, Sphagnum bogs with scattered birch, mossy commons, birch scrub on old industrial ground, and the birch component of mixed plantations. It is often found among Sphagnum and other mosses, and it tolerates much wetter ground than many milkcaps.

The season runs from midsummer through autumn, peaking from late August into October in temperate regions, and it may persist into November in mild years.

Separating It from Look-alikes

Grey Milkcap, Lactarius vietus. The most important comparison, because it also grows with birch, is also greyish and is also small. Separate it on two points: its cap is smooth and slightly viscid when moist rather than dry and scurfy, and its white latex dries greyish or greenish-grey on the gills, leaving grey stains along damaged gill edges. It also lacks the coconut odour.

Birch Milkcap, Lactarius tabidus. Another small birch associate, but warm orange-tan to brick or reddish-buff rather than lilac-grey, with a wrinkled centre. Its key check is that the white latex turns sulphur-yellow within a minute when smeared on a white handkerchief or on white paper. That yellowing never happens in Coconut Milkcap.

Woolly Milkcap and Bearded Milkcap, Lactarius torminosus and L. pubescens. Both are birch associates, but both are considerably larger, distinctly pink to salmon-toned, and both have a conspicuously shaggy, woolly, bearded cap margin, which Coconut Milkcap never shows.

Fenugreek Milkcap, Lactarius helvus. Also a species of wet, Sphagnum-rich acid ground and also strongly scented, but the odour is a heavy spicy curry or fenugreek note rather than coconut. It is much larger, warm pale cinnamon-buff with a scurfy-felted cap, and its latex is watery and clear rather than white and milky.

Dark coconut-scented relatives, Lactarius mammosus and allies. These share the coconut odour but are markedly darker, greyish-brown to almost blackish-brown, and are associated with conifers on sandy ground rather than with birch. Habitat and cap colour separate them.

Assembled, the working formula is: small dry scurfy lilac-grey cap with a small umbo, crowded pale buff gills, sparse white latex that stays white, a strong coconut odour, a buff spore print, on damp acid ground under birch.

Why does the latex sometimes fail to appear?
The flow is naturally sparse in this species and depends on the fruit body being fresh and well hydrated. In dry weather, in old or weathered specimens, or where a fruit body has already been damaged, little or no latex will bead from a cut. Use a young cap collected after rain, cut across the gills near the stipe, and give it several seconds.
