Coffee Leaf Rust
Hemileia vastatrix
Also called coffee rust, roya, orange coffee rust
A tropical rust that dusts the undersides of coffee leaves with vivid orange-yellow powder beneath pale translucent spots on the upper surface.
Overview
Hemileia vastatrix is the rust of Coffea species and the best known member of the genus Hemileia, a group of rusts distinguished by kidney-shaped spores with a warty convex face and a smooth concave one. The name Hemileia, meaning half-smooth, refers directly to that spore.
The fungus is visible in the field as bright orange-yellow powder on the underside of living coffee leaves. Seen from above the same areas appear as pale yellow, faintly translucent spots that enlarge and coalesce, eventually browning in the centre. Because the powder brushes off freely, a fingertip drawn across an infected leaf comes away vividly stained.
Only the uredinial stage is regularly seen. Teliospores form rarely, and the aecial stage and any alternate host remain unknown, so for practical purposes the fungus recycles endlessly from coffee leaf to coffee leaf wherever the crop grows.
How to identify it
Upper leaf surface
Spots begin as small pale yellow, slightly oily-looking translucent flecks, 2-3 mm across, best seen with the leaf held to the light. They expand to rounded or irregular yellow patches 1-3 cm across, sometimes merging into large blotches, with the oldest centres turning brown and necrotic while the margin stays yellow.
Lower leaf surface
Directly beneath each yellow spot is a dense mass of powdery spores, brilliant orange to orange-yellow, sometimes described as the colour of turmeric. The powder is loose and easily dislodged. Old pustules fade to a dull tan and the tissue beneath dries and darkens.
Leaf and shrub habit
Infection is concentrated on mature leaves rather than the very youngest, and defoliation proceeds from the lower and inner branches outward. Heavily colonised shrubs are left with bare branch sections carrying leaves only at the tips.
Spores
No spore print applies. Urediniospores are reniform or kidney-shaped, roughly 25-35 micrometres long, with the convex surface covered in blunt warts and the concave surface smooth. This spore shape is diagnostic under a microscope and separates Hemileia from all the common Puccinia and Uromyces rusts.
Where and when it grows
The fungus is restricted to coffee, chiefly Coffea arabica and to a lesser degree C. canephora and other species, and therefore occurs in coffee-growing regions throughout the tropics and subtropics. It reached prominence in nineteenth-century Sri Lanka, then spread through Asia and Africa and, in the twentieth century, to the Americas, where it is now established from Brazil to Mexico and the Caribbean.
Development requires liquid water on the leaf surface for spore germination, so the rust follows the rainy season and thrives in warm, humid, low- to mid-elevation plantations. Cooler high-altitude sites slow it, though warming temperatures have allowed it upslope. Wind, rain splash, and movement of people and machinery all carry the powdery spores.
Ecological role
Hemileia vastatrix is an obligate biotroph that penetrates the leaf through stomata on the underside and feeds through haustoria in the living mesophyll. Its cycle is essentially uredinial: spores germinate on a wet leaf, produce an appressorium over a stoma, colonise the tissue over one to several weeks, then erupt as a new orange pustule, allowing many generations in a single wet season.
The ecological consequence for the host is progressive defoliation, which reduces the shrub's capacity to support the following season's growth and induces branch dieback. Because no alternate host is known and sexual recombination is rare or absent, populations are largely clonal, though distinct races differing in host range are recognised and new ones appear periodically.
Similar species
American leaf spot of coffee (Mycena citricolor) produces round brown spots that drop out to leave shot-holes and bears tiny luminous yellow gemmae on stalks, not orange powder. Cercospora leaf spot (Cercospora coffeicola) gives brown spots with a pale grey centre and a yellow halo, with no powdery pustule beneath. Brown eye spot and general nutrient chlorosis both yellow the leaf but never leave orange dust on the fingers.
Hemileia coffeicola, the powdery or grey rust of coffee, is the closest genuine relative: it spreads more diffusely over the whole leaf underside as a thin, pale yellowish film rather than forming discrete bright orange pustules under distinct yellow spots.
